Better Call Saul season 5 (spoilers)

TBH, I was worried for the goldfish. The aquarium. He could have shot at it on the way out…and I was almost ready to scream for Mike to just shoot him, already.

Me too!

on the podcast they say they did not set a new record

I have been worried about that fish tank for most of the series. It’s like a Chekhov’s Gun that they seem to be trying to drag out as long as they can.

One minor detail I noticed – when Jimmy is fixing himself a bowl of cereal, I said “Hey, he eats the same cereal I do!” (Kroger store-brand generic oatey-Os) And then I said “Hey, they didn’t have that box design 10 years ago!” I had noticed something similar a few seasons ago when Mike pulled a bag of Kroger frozen veggies out of his freezer. The packaging was a relatively new design in our timeline, definitely out of place in his.

You know the box design of Kroger-brand oatey-Os from 10 years ago?

That is a definite memory for detail!

I misspoke by calling Bolsa Don Eladio. They are both cartel figures above the level of the Salamancas, right? Not sure which is higher.

<Disclaimer: I only recently googled this stuff because I didn’t get it myself. I got most of it from Juarez Cartel>

The cartel was started by Bolsa, Eladio and Hector. For whatever reason, Eladio eventually became the boss.
Unfortunately it set up a dynamic where you have this rivalry between Bolsa and Hector, exacerbated by the fact that they operate as two, largely separate, crews.

Gus works for Bolsa, whereas Hector’s side is basically a family operation at the top levels, apart from Nacho.

Interesting! Thanks.

When Jimmy answered Lalo’s Q about the car with “I don’t know” I was shocked. Jimmy on form would never have made such a basic error. Obviously he’s gone through a terrible physical ordeal and isn’t at his best, but it was the fear of being splashed by Kim’s blood as he had been with the hijacker’s that threw him. A horrible mix of trauma, fear for Kim and near helplessness. His desparation to get her out of the room made him as good as admit wrongdoing to Lalo “It was me…Whatever it was you think”.

Whereas, as you say, Kim rose to the occasion. She’s had practice with Kevin at disarming an angry boss by telling him he’s the one who fucked up, and that paid off handsomely now. An incredibly gutsy move, but it worked and gave Lalo a lot to think about.

Two nice bits of foreshadowing for both of these character developments: Jimmy going into work and fucking up a case he should have won at a canter, and Kim going back to her desk for the cork from the high-end tequila she and Jimmy scammed from that rich stockbroker. He’s too traumatised to function; she’s feeling the love the of the game.

(I think the film they were watching before Jimmy was called in to work was His Girl Friday - which is about a woman who had a resepctable life lined up falling back in with her untrustworthy but exciting partner in a high-stakes game that prizes thinking on your feet.)

Good analysis Stanislaus. I think it was a great scene because all the pieces came together beautifully and the writers didn’t overplay their hand; there’s clearly more to come.
I think Lalo is too smart to completely buy Kim’s version, especially after Jimmy’s “I don’t know”. But he doesn’t not buy it enough to take any action right now – there’s enough seeds of doubt. Plus he realizes she’s right that Jimmy did do a lot for him and is still invaluable to him.

Another Q - Mike warning Jimmy is one thing, showing up prepared to kill Lalo if he raised his gun is something else. Do we think that had Gus’s approval? I doubt it. The Chicken Man would be quite happy to have Lalo kill two lawyers in their home if it gave him yet another reason to keep away from Albuquerque - and he certainly wouldn’t see keeping Jimmy and Kim alive as worth the risk of censure by Don Eladio for killing Lalo

Mike and Gus are still not entirely on the same page. Mike has a loyalty and sense of responsibility towards those he works with that Gus entirely lacks. Nacho would be a free man if it were up to Mike, but Gus has plans for him. I think it’s entirely likely that Nacho is going to crack under the pressure one way or another.

(Also interesting was that Bolsa was taking action to get Lalo out of the picture too - he’s no dummy and you don’t have to be much more than a dummy to connect Lalo’s presence to a sudden rash of bad luck for Gus. It makes a lot more sense that the guy who made the call about the cousins was calling someone inside the cartel rather than outside.)

You sure that’s a Javelin? I thought it was an AMX. Then your post convinced me I was wrong. But this last ep I thought I saw AMX badging both on the rear and inside…

I remember back in 72, my dad was deciding upon which company car to get. We were in the Chrysler-AMC dealer, and he pointed to a purple javelin, and asked 12-yr-old me, “What do you think about THAT?”

Ended up w/ a Gran Torino. Coulda been cool, if it weren’t a 4-door in brown over brown!

I think it’s likely that Mike is going to go behind Gus’s back for Nacho’s sake, and Gus will figure it out and use it as a chance to show Mike how good he is at figuring things out. In BB when Walter tries to have Mike get Jesse arrested and Mike refuses to do it, he mentions that ‘when your boss (Gus) finds out, and he always does…’. I think he might have a more personal experience with that than just seeing Gus figure out other people’s plans.

Oh - and I’ve been disparaging about eps others of you have praised, so I oughtta step up and say this week’s was the best I recall in a long while. Reminded me why I like this show so much.

Re: “I don’t know.” At first, I thought it a flat out gaffe. Then I wondered if it was sorta sarcastic, “Gee, I was stranded in the desert w/ 150# of cash. What do YOU think? That I had the time/energy to push a car in a ditch?” I was thinking that he was doing a good job of not repeating the same story verbatim - ALWAYS a good sign of a lie.

They sure uglied Mike up from the sun - but both Mike’s and Jimmy’s skin seemed to clear up quicker than I’d imagine.

What was it that made Lalo have second thoughts out by the well? Just realized he shoulda seen the broken down car on the way in?

Mike wasn’t there to protect Jimmy. He was there to see if Jimmy would tell Lalo how Gus’s group helped him.

He switched his aim to Jimmy for just a moment. He was prepared to shoot either or both if necessary.

Probably the thing I find most impressive about this show is how, despite admitting they plot ‘only three minutes in advance’, they make sure every important plot moment hearkens back clearly to earlier character development. All those considered, deliberate character beats that they lavish attention on and that cause a few to criticize the show as slow-moving, pay off down the road as real character development. First season Kim couldn’t have been able to pull this off and wouldn’t have tried. Hardened, experienced Kim can. We’ve seen her practice.

The level of logical character development is off the charts compared to most series on tv.

Nacho had asked Lalo if he wanted him to wait with him at the well. Lalo said that he was fine, the cousins would be there soon to pick him up and that Nacho could leave. Nacho then says, in a low voice as if he were saying it to himself “S’alls good” before walking back to the car. That little reminder gave Lalo something to think about, and he’s smart enough to figure out that they didn’t see the car.

Thanks. Didn’t catch that.

Wasn’t a BB fan. Is Nacho in BB?

I got a kick outta seeing the old stroked out guy w/ the bell having a party hat strapped to his head! Yeah it sure looked like he was enjoying the hell outta that!

Thanks for the reminder. I didn’t recall offhand what the significance of that was.

Not as a character. The only reference to him (or Lalo) in BB is when Saul is begging for his life when he thinks Walt and Jesse are going to execute him, and he yells out “It was Ignacio. He’s the one!” and “Lalo didn’t send you?” Much of the plot of BCS is based on those two throwaway lines (as Saul’s fate after BB is based on his one line about ending up managing a Cinnabon in Omaha).
