I call them that not because I think ill of dogs, but because of some similar behaviour.
I’m reminded of a Dave Barry column where he is talking about having his dogs in the woods.
One of them pees, marking his territory, then moves on.
The other dog is right behind him, “marking over” that same territory.
And as Barry put it, “with each one thinking he’s the baddest hombre on the planet,” or something like that.
Some posters are like that. Someone posits something, and someone else responds with something like “You’re wrong” or “That’s stupid” or “That’s silly” without giving a credible rebuttal, and never posting back to offer one.
Then, he (typically it’s a guy) he moves on to some other thread and similarly “marks” it, apparently thinking “That’ll show 'em who’s really smart.”
I personally have no problem with someone getting me up to speed on some inaccuracy, misconception, or just bad learning–but I would appreciate some more info that just one of the responses above.
(And, no, I am not feeling picked on. This has happened to me only a couple of times, and it hasn’t happened recently, but I have seen it recently, and it’s just as annoying to watch it happen to someone else.)
On another message board I post to we’ve got one of those. Not only does he post unfounded contradictions with no evidence to back himself up, he then claims that he has “proven” everybody else wrong and made them look stupid.
He also likes to accuse anyone who disagrees with him of being the same person as someone else, and then tell everybody how he “outed” them and showed their “true colours.” He never offers any evidence whatsoever, just tells us that it’s so and that’s it.
This guy seriously drives me nuts. I stopped responding to him a few days ago, so now he’s telling everyone how he shut me up, and how I just knew I was wrong. Argh!
