Your quote (can’t seem to do this properly on a phone): “What if dropping Biden and replacing him with Buttigieg or Newsome (or Harris) is what would lose the presidency?”
Obviously, don’t do it then, but how would we know this?

Counterexample: In 2000 Dick Cheney was 5 years older than the presidential candidate and already had three heart attacks under his belt.

We should remember that the Republicans are not really trying to help us win this election. If we’re seeing a widespread Republican campaign telling us we should do something, that means it would probably be a bad idea to do it.
The Republicans will also point out that if Biden isn’t fit to be President next year, why should we accept that he’s fit to be President this year?
Expressing the conclusion that he no longer has a realistic path to winning the election after that debate is not saying that he is not fit to be president. It is stating that Trump has never been fit for president and Biden while a great president is currently a disaster candidate who looks unlikely to prevent the great harms Trump has planned for our country.
Yeah Biden’s job is not only to convince his strongest supporters that he is very fit, but that he is fit enough to convince those who don’t pay much attention but saw that debate that he is.
That’s a heavy lift.
The assumption is that a Dem presidential candidate should be polling around the same as a Dem Senate candidate. If not, that means that some voters are inclined to vote for a Dem Senate candidate, but not Biden. That kind of ticket splitting is bad for Dems, and right now Biden is seriously underperforming in states that matter.
So Silver’s point is that a different pres candidate could be expected to poll closer to what the Senate candidates are. I didn’t know if I’m explaining that clearly.
Thanks! Quite clear!
Now that Biden has King-like powers, couldn’t he say its OK for two people from the same state on the democratic ticket?
Is this not legal today? I’m 48 and honestly did not know that.
The issue is that the Constitution says that electors from a state cannot cast their votes for both a Presidential and Vice Presidential candidate from that state. So, in the hypothetical, California could not cast votes for both Harris and Newsom on the same ticket. The remedy is for one of them to establish residency somewhere else.
For example, Bush II and Cheney both resided in Texas. Cheney also owned a ranch in Wyoming so he changed his residence to his other, already established, residence.
Does Newsome already own property where he regularly resides outside of California? Maybe he could buy a place in Arizona and change his residency to there but then could he remain as Governor? Can a VP pull the same stunt and remain VP? You can be assured that the GOP has already thought of this scenario and has the law suits ready. So another insane and distracting monkey wrench thrown into the mix which the Conservative wing of SCOTUS will twist an into a decision that will fuck our Democracy.
A far-fetched thought: How would it look to the electorate if Biden resigned, Harris then appointed him VP, and the Biden-Harris ticket for the election just flipped to Harris-Biden?
It could not happen. You do not appoint a vice president, you submit a name to Congress for confirmation. A VP nominee would need a majority of both houses of Congress to be confirmed and if you think Mike Johnson would even allow such a vote you are sadly mistaken.
Can a VP pull the same stunt and remain VP?
There’s no requirement that the Vice President maintain residency in the state from which she was elected. In fact it would probably be easier for Harris to change her residency than Newsom, since her official home for the last three years has been the Naval Observatory.

Heh. You know, you’ve just made me wonder: if the response to the debate does lead to Biden swapping out for Harris, and Harris winds up winning against Trump, then Trump is never going to shut up about having done the Democrats a favor, is he?
‘Oh, yeah, all the polling said I would’ve won the election against Biden — but I beat him so badly in the debate that they illegally replaced him on the ticket. And I was only giving it, like, eighty percent in that debate! If I’d known he was so far gone, I would’ve only put in maybe sixty percent effort to make him look a little better, and cruised to victory in November.’
Every. Single. Day.
if the response to the debate does lead to Biden swapping out for Harris, and Harris winds up winning against Trump, then Trump is never going to shut up about having done the Democrats a favor, is he?
I think mostly what he’d whine about is how the evil godless Democrats cheated, and “illegally” changed candidates too late in the process, thus once again “rigging the election,” and that he is, in fact the “legitimate winner.”
Yeah, he’d lose what little mind he has left if he lost to a woman of color.
Gretchen from Mich. For VP.
Killer ticket.
I’m with this 110%
More than two congressmen:
Ah, so here is the real story-

Democratic governors to Democratic members of Congress: Drop dead.
That may be overstating the message sent Wednesday night by a group of the country’s governors, but not by much…By descending on Washington to meet with President Joe Biden and then emerging from the West Wing to oh-so-earnestly pledge their public support to the beleaguered president, the governors complicated the efforts of congressional Democrats to ease him off the ticket.
Your quote (can’t seem to do this properly on a phone): “What if dropping Biden and replacing him with Buttigieg or Newsome (or Harris) is what would lose the presidency?”
We know it at least in the case with Buttigieg who has little experience and is openly gay.
So, in the hypothetical, California could not cast votes for both Harris and Newsom on the same ticket. The remedy is for one of them to establish residency somewhere else.
There was no issue with Bush & Cheney.
Yeah, he’d lose what little mind he has left if he lost to a woman of color.
This alone would motivate many people to be sure to vote for Kamala.
There was no issue with Bush & Cheney.
Indeed there was. Cheney had to switch residence from Texas to Wyoming after being selected for just this reason.

Yeah, but he still was a texan, and said so.
Heh. You know, you’ve just made me wonder: if the response to the debate does lead to Biden swapping out for Harris, and Harris winds up winning against Trump, then Trump is never going to shut up about having done the Democrats a favor, is he?
If Trump loses, he’s going to spend the rest of his life saying two things: The Democrats stole another election from me and Send me money.
If he wins, he’ll still say the Democrats tried to steal the election but he outsmarted them. And send him money.
Polls are completely useless and meaningless this far out. Come talk to me in October.
