I’m imagining in the future a broken trump, with dementia settling in, muttering incessantly to his nurses or anyone witihin earshot about how much larger his inauguration crowd was than Biden’s.
WASHINGTON (NewsNation Now) — Participants in a rehearsal for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration were evacuated from the West Front of the Capitol on Monday on orders of security officials after a fire in a nearby homeless encampment, officials said.
Those who had gathered for a walk-through, including a military band, were directed to head indoors and moved in the direction of a secure location inside the Capitol complex.
“Public safety and law enforcement responded to a small fire in the area of 1st and F streets SE, Washington, D.C. that has been extinguished,” the U.S. Secret Service said in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution the U.S. Capitol complex was temporarily shutdown. There is no threat to the public.”
We now know that Trump will be well on his way to Florida and Pence will be there. So the only thing left to predict is whether Biden will even mention Trump and I think he will. Exactly 48 hours now.
I’d like Biden to begin his speech: “Our long national nightmare if finally over…” Yes, thanking Mike Pence for showing a scintilla of decency for attending should be in the mix. But absolutely ZERO mention of his predecessor.
Once the speech is over, hop in the limo and book it to the White House. No need for a luncheon with Congress due to covid, just get sworn in and get to the business of beginning to undo the damage wrought by a madman.
If I had to be money, I would say that he would imply a lot about Trump, but not mention him by name or thank him in any way. He will thank Mike Pence, who will be there.
He’ll mention all the lies, divisiveness, and so forth, but not specifically dig into Trump by name. He’ll just…let him disappear like an old Tweet.
Biden is a very classy guy. I think he will not speak the name “trump” but will make some sort of non-committal reference to “the president.” He probably will mention Pence by name. JMHO.
Even though Gerald Ford said it, I think it would be better if Biden didn’t Go There. Leave the persecution, prosecution, vilification, name-calling, bitterness, and retribution to others in his administration. And there are plenty chomping at the bit to do it.
I’m with Thelma on this. Biden is too classy to wallow in the mud and I think he’d rather focus on what he’ll do as president going forward, not reflect on the past. Outside of possible indictments I’d like Biden to never refer to Trump again.
You’re right, of course, Biden is far classier than I am. He will reach across the aisle as he tends to do. And he will be rewarded by extended middle fingers from the other side.
After he’s sworn in, Biden will deliver his inaugural address (see more on that below).
Biden will then move to the Capitol’s East Front for what’s known as Pass in Review, a longstanding tradition in which a new president assesses the military troops.
After that, Biden, Harris and former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, along with their spouses, will then travel to Arlington National Cemetery to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Biden will then receive a military escort, with every branch of the military represented, from 15th Street to the White House before an evening of virtual activities.
So I guess I’m going to be compulsively refreshing the news for quite a large chunk of Wednesday.
Just out of curiosity, are there two presidential limos? I assume one will be in Florida to drive Donnie to his golf club, but I doubt it could be flown back to DC in time for Biden to go to Arlington. So does Joe have to wait for the limo to get back or is there a second one?
It appears there is currently only one, but this article indicates that Biden will use it for the inauguration.
While I wouldn’t put it past Trump to have it flown to Florida just to fuck with Biden, I haven’t seen any indication that he intends to do so. And since there’s a helipad at Mar-a-Lago, I’m sure that’s how he would get there, especially to avoid seeing people with LOSER signs along his route.
My fellow citizens: I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you’ve bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors.
I thank President Bush for his service to our nation – (applause) – as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.
