Big Bang Theory 1/12--The Shiny Trinket Maneuver

At Last! A new episode:

Amy feels disappointed when Sheldon doesn’t sincerely congratulate her on her new found accomplishment. Elsewhere, Howard learns of Bernadette’s aversion to children.

great! I just discovered this series recently and have had a good time catching up. Best use of cameos I can think of.

In the NYC area, the first episode was aired in syndication Tuesday night, and the second one last night. I was somewhat disappointed when Sheldon did a very normal knock on Penny’s door.

ETA: Next week is the 100th episode!! Way to go Big Bang!

Yeah, Sheldon’s obsessive knocking wasn’t introduced until late in the first season [Google] in the tenth episode, “The Loobenfeld Decay.”

I noticed that too. I wonder when Sheldon started that whole ‘knock three times’ thing.

ETA: I see I got ninjaed with an answer. But still, I wonder why they gave him that little quirk. He was/is quirky enough already.

Does it seem like Penny is the only one who messes with Sheldon in such a way as to nudge him out of his comfort zone? Everyone else interacts with him intellectually, even when they’re trying to discuss non-intellectual things. That gives Sheldon the chance to hear their words, consider their arguments, and reject them. That’s not really pushing him in a way that will lead him to grow and develop. But there’s an episode where he knocks on Penny’s door, knock knock knock “Penny”, and it’s immediately answered with knock knock knock “Sheldon”. It’s something that he has to figure out how to deal with on the fly. Penny seems to be the only one who provides that challenge to him.

she is the only normal.

I think Bernadette is supposed to be normal, too.

Bernadette’s less normal than Leonard - she’s every bit as brilliant as the guys, and Leonard, at least, realizes that flesh eating bacteria isn’t a proper topic for dinner-table conversation. (Unless everybody at the table is a microbiologist.)

I love it, and totally think it fits the character. I’ve always imagined little Aspergersy Sheldon, bursting in on his mom without knocking first; she then proceeds to tell Shelly to knock before entering. Later on, he knocks and opens the door before being told he can come in. So she then tells him “Shelly, you can’t just knock and barge in. I want to you knock three times, say the person’s name, and wait for the person to let you in. Three times.”

And now you have adult Sheldon who can’t enter a room without knocking and saying a person’s name three times because he understands this to be the only socially acceptable way to do it.

Didn’t like the episode at all.

“Amy feels disappointed when Sheldon doesn’t sincerely congratulate her on her new found accomplishment”. Really? Amy didn’t know that Sheldon was a complete ignoramus regarding social matters before they were a couple? She knew what she was getting into, so why would this be surprising enough to upset her?

And Bernadette saying “I make waayyy more money than you do” to Howard is a jerk thing to do. Can you imagine a guy making much more money than his girlfriend and rubbing her face in it on a sitcom? It would be considered a jerk move, not a funny line.

The local station is showing reruns from the earlier seasons, and those are much better. Somehow the storylines and the dynamic of the group were better in the first couple of seasons.

No matter how you slice it, the kid’s still gonna be old enough to buy beer before he’s tall enough to ride Space Mountain…

Me too. I have three college-going daughters in the sciences and I told them that I watch it so that I can relate to them better.

Then I compared one to Sheldon (smartest), one to Leonard (most normal) and one to Howard… I immediately regretted that one.

Just about lost it when Amy saw the tiara. Freaking hilarious. Mayam Bialik, I LOVE YOU!

Bernadette doing the snake eyes to the little kid was great too.

Although I think my favourite moment was when Sheldon looked at his pocket watch, Penny made some disparaging remark about it, and he said “Nonsense! I look like a train conductor.” And rather than rolling her eyes or something, Penny laughed affectionately. Nawwwww…

Did anyone recognize the actor who played the jewelry salesman? He seems familiar…

Mrs. Homie and I at first thought he might be the same guy who played the snooty Maitre 'D in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but it isn’t him (according to IMDB, which doesn’t yet have the full cast of last night’s episode up).

Really? That’s not the same actor? I figured it had to be.

Funny episode, as I’ve come to expect. A few comments creep to mind…

  1. Mayim Bialik deserves an Emmy for her portrayal of Amy. PERIOD. I love ShAmy as a perfect growing experience for Sheldon (and Amy, too)
  2. Although I enjoyed the first two seasons (and own both), it wasn’t until they introduced Bernadette that I could stand Howard; he was just, well, creepy and one dimensional. I am concerned that they might be signalling Bernadette’s leaving…
  3. The addition of the Amy and Bernadette characters made this show far better; there are more yangs to the boys’ yins (I tried it the other way 'round, and it sounded like something first season Howard woould’ve said- ewww!). And If I am correct in #2- I am worried about the future of the show (unless they hook Raj- FINALLY- up with Bernadette; remember he is in love with her already)
  4. The conductor line of course ties in to Sheldon’s well-established love of trains- brilliant!
  5. I about fell out of my seat when, after Amy kisses him, and still in her loving embrace, and uncomfortable Sheldon looked at Penny and said: “See, told you a tiara was too much.” rotflmao!

I’ve missed a few episodes lately. Has Amy previously expressed a desire for a tiara?

The joke was SOOO telegraphed – Amy chiding Sheldon for thinking she can be bought off with some trinket while beginning to reach into the bag – and we all just* know *she’ll immediately change her tune and react favorably to the jewelry.

Yet still, Mayim Bialik made me laugh out loud with her reaction. Well done!

This!
Had to watch it twice. Something about the way she bellowed “Tee-AAAW-rah”
