Big Brother 12 - Season Thread

I heard that! Still, for summer fare where the whole idea seems to be to build up a big gob of hate, how could it fail?

The way they’ve focused on the grotesquely ridiculous shomance between Rachel and Brendon has had me angry all season, and yet I still watch the blasted thing.

Give me all the ones I’ve hated before and let me force myself to care about one of them. It would make the hot weather pass so fast.

I meant the personalities. Bad players get gone too fast to notice their personalities. I mean people like Allison and Jun and Jesse and the ones that make you want to gun down your TV!

Up at the top of the thread I listed all the past players (before this one) with the hope we could select the real duds (personality wise) but it has yet to happen. Maybe another thread for that purpose?

I seriously don’t think I could survive another summer watching Jessie (especially if his harem is going to be there, too). I’ll either be electrocuted or bleed to death from the glass cuts from when I punch my TV screen in.

Gotcha! If my wife wasn’t such a big fan, I would have bailed on this season way back.

Oh Julie, Julie. “Succubus” is not a dirty word.

Neither you nor Britney are entirely correct. First, she never had Matt. Matt has been gunning for her hardcore since the day Brendon won HoH two weeks ago. Britney is no fool; she picked up on that pretty quickly. (I’m a fan of Matt, but I thought the “evil succubus” comment was a little harsh.) Out of the final 7, Matt was the one most gunning for Britney, and by a decent margin. And that includes Brendon. Britney may have been manipulated by the Brigade to get rid of Matt, but that was the best possible thing she could have done for her game.

Lane is a tricky thing. I was honestly surprised by his DR last night where he stated outright that he is more loyal to the Brigade than to Britney; I was sure he’d toss Enzo for her and then be unable to choose between her and Hayden. Looks like I misread him. I don’t think Britney does, though. Remember that conversation they showed last night between Brit and Lane up in HoH when he was talking her off the ledge? During that conversation Britney point-blank asked him if she and Hayden were on the block, who would he vote for. He didn’t answer, so she stopped him talking and point blank asked him again. Again he didn’t answer. She knows for a fact she’s low man on the Hayden/Lane/Enzo/Britney totem pole.

Also remember that she didn’t even manage to worm her way into the Brigade (she still doesn’t know about it; she just thinks she’s in a final 4 deal) until three days ago after Brendon won PoV. Before that she quite literally had no alliance with anyone.

For the first two weeks, Britney was in an actual alliance with Monet. Monet left week 2. On Monday Britney finally got into her second alliance of the season, all the way in week 7. That’s a long time to go it alone. She knew she was never in an alliance with Matt, which means she knew she wasn’t in an alliance with Ragan because Ragan was blinded by his love for Matt.

We finally have our first dynamic where the Brigade is being targetted, which is why Ragan was the #1 target in tonight’s double eviction. (Brendon called it right in his interview despite having no clue as to why.) Can Ragan win HoH? God I hope so, since he would almost certainly put up Hayden and Enzo with either Lane or Britney as a replacement nom. Even though he is aware of “the boys” working together, he is still inexplicably focused on the idea of pairs. In his mind, it’s Hayden/Enzo, Lane/Britney, and him. He could focus on Lane/Britney but I doubt it.

In a literal sense, Britney has been alone for almost the entire game. Lane has been putting in effort to keep her safe only to the extent that it aligns with the Brigade’s interests. When she finally won HoH Lane manipulated her into backdooring Matt soley for Brigade-related reasons. That it happened to help Britney was a nice bonus. On the one hand Lane has been looking out for her. On the other hand, she’s been a disposable asset that Lane has cultivated but apparently he would not have gone out of his way to help her. This is not what you would normally think of as “not being alone.”

Let me put it another way. Britney has the same basic alliance now that Brendon had for the last couple weeks with Hayden and Enzo. Brendon thought he was in pretty good with them, but in reality they were in their own alliance using Brendon as a human shield. Brendon was never really in that alliance so he was literally alone, even though his fake alliance was working with him to get rid of Ragan tonight.

That’s exactly the dynamic Britney has had with Lane all season. The only reason the Brigade brought her in is because Lane demonstrated his ability to control her by getting her to backdoor her “ally” Matt. What’s funny is that Britney is aware of pretty much all of this, which is why she’s prone to crying. Lane even told her straight up that she needed to backdoor Matt so he could show the guys that he could control her. That was the price of admission, and she paid it.

Bold move by Lane tonight, but I think it was the right choice. As for the POV:

Enzo and Ragan both fought hard, but give Enzo credit, he came through when it mattered.

I laughed out loud at the producers blurring the mouth of Enzo’s puppet.

I thought it was a good little in-joke how they threw in the scene with Lane saying he was getting in the shower, especially considering that he was just talking to Britney.
For those who may not know what I’m talking about, check this out from about a week or two ago:

Booooooooooooooooo on the anti-Britney HoH competition. I don’t understand why production didn’t give her a fighting chance.

Hopefully she can pull it out on the face-mixing PoV, but she has already said that she’s not confident on that comp and that Enzo knows the faces better than her.

Could production really want an all-Brigade final 3?

Spoilers for PoV and house events last night: (long and juicy, plus youtube videos. Check 'em quick before they’re pulled!)
Hayden won PoV, and the Brigade came out to Britney. At first it was just Enzo and Lane, and they explained to her the details of how the Brigade was formed and controlled the game all season. Brit understands what they’re saying but doesn’t internalize it; she still thinks she has a final 3 with Hayden and Lane, and that Hayden will veto Brit/Lane to send Enzo home. Note: While completely alone in HoH, Hayden looked at the camera and said “Brigade final 3, it’s done.” Don’t believe the cheap editing tricks on tonight’s show; that conversation between Hayden and Enzo about sending Lane home made it clear they could never bring Britney to final 3. (It was during a BBAD, and I heard it myself.)

After a half-hour or so of Brigade reveal, Hayden joins them, annoyed that they told her without him. (He put on a nice shirt specifically for the reveal since it will be guaranteed camera time.) At one point Hayden turns to Brit and says “I’m sorry, Brit, I’m glad you won that 10k.” Pregnant pause as realization dawns on Britney. Within seconds she has teared up, and after a minute or two she starts crying. Hayden goes to comfort her but she gets up and leaves the room.

Lane later went to try and comfort her but she was too distraught. It was really quite sad. Though on the plus side for me, most of this happened on BBAD, making last night one of the top 3 BBADs all season. (That blowup with Brendon/Ragan/Britney at the hammock was #1.)

Youtube highlights of the reveal are here. This is roughly an hour edited down to 15 minutes. (Shitty camera feed; BBADs was much better with closeups of Britney’s face as the realization dawned on her.)

Youtube of Lane trying to console her later on here. It’s only a couple minutes long, and has a really great moment at the end:

Lane: I’m just saying I didn’t…never wanted this. And I never played you.
Britney sniffles, wipes away tears.
Lane: I do have a lot of feelings for you, you’re a really cool girl. I want nothing to change after this.
Britney: 'kay

The Brigade had talked about it before the reveal and decided last night was the best time in order to let her sleep on it. She had a rough night indeed, but it surely helped. The next morning she decided to “let death take her” (love that Enzo-ism) and be happy with how well she did. To quote Jeff from last season, she got got, she lost, it hurts. Basically her attitude is no use crying over it, might as well enjoy the last week before the nightmare that is the jury house.
On an unrelated note, I have gotten over my hatred of Enzo. He is truly a scumbag and a vile eater, but damnit he’s personable and engaging and he cracks me up. I have been getting most of my recaps from jokers because Hamstertime is about 1000 times too full of themselves over this season. Endless cracks on houseguests that really just sound like bittercakes Survivor jury questions.

They hate the Brigade, they hate Enzo, Britney is a bitch, this season sucks, they’ll all get what’s coming to them when they get out and find out everyone hates them, this season is grounds for firing Allison Grodner, blah blah blah. In their bizarro world of denial they cannot accept that this season is quite successful and one of the higher rated seasons ever.

They are clearly wrong about most of their observations, and are so filled with self-righteous vitriol that……I am LOVING that the Brigade made final 3 and it looks like Enzo has a decent chance to win it. Bwahahahahahaha!!! I’d rather Hayden win it based on comps, but I’d be fine with Enzo winning based on his phenomenal social game. The [del]haters[/del] recappers think he played a terrible social game and get unbelievably pissed every time Enzo correctly points out that he played one of the best social games ever. I’m loving their distress beyond belief. Jokers is much the same but their recaps are segregated from their editorials so I don’t have to listen to the constant bitching and whining.

About the episode, I really don’t understand the stress and distress prior to the nominations. At the time of the Noms, it matters not who is nominated because if one of the nominees wins the veto, he (or she) takes himself (herself) off the block. If the person not nominated wins the veto, (s)he does nothing.

The only thing that throws a wrench in the deal is if the HOH (Hayden) wins the veto. I guess, if he were to win, that he can change the noms.

But the crying, the whining, the discomfort prior to the noms was over the top editing.

And Ellis, I agree with you about the HT recappers. I quit reading them. I just went there to see who got nominated, and who wins the HOH (when necesaary), and the veto

I’m waiting until Wednesday night to post my thoughts on this season (as of now, at least) so I don’t have to put it in a spoiler box.

Also, the recappers don’t seem to understand how the game works. They dersively sneered the PoV winner* when s/he talked about their eviction speech. “What, to Julie?! These people are so STUPID!!!” Uh, no they’re not douchebag, it’s you recappers that are dumb. Even I remember last season when Kevin won PoV at final 4 and gave a speech before he evicted Michele. Duh. There are endless clearly wrong rants bashing the houseguests like this by the recappers, and almost every case is this obnoxious.

It’s a good thing I long ago gave up posting on BB sites just because they get pissy when it’s pointed out that they’re wrong. Even worse is the subjective stuff, like how there is apparently a huge debate on jokers about who Britney is crushing on: Lane, Hayden or Brendon. WTF, are they stupid? She’s crushing on Lane, clear as day, no question, and has been since day 1. Hayden? Brendon?!

It’s gotten to the point where I think youtube comments are more insightful and thought-out than recapper editorials. It’s a shame, too, because I thought they were on target during BB11.

*I’m using PoV winner here in the generic sense of “person who is in the same position as Kevin was last season.”

Love Britney, sad to see her go. I’m voting for her to win AC. Wonder if Nick will be pissed she forgot him in her speech? heh.

The recappers are boiling over with seething rage that the Brigade made the final 3, and are using the most ridiculous rationalizations to downplay the Brigade’s accomplishment. Because they annoy me as much as Enzo annoys them, I’m loving it.

Here’s how I see it. On day 1 after Hayden won HoH – remember that they go a week before the feeds come on, so the first eviction was actually day 13 – they did the saboteur blackout. Once the power came back on Enzo, Matt, Lane and Hayden all could vouch for each other during the blackout so they knew none of them was the saboteur. Enzo decided to form an alliance with them based on the blackout and the first HoH.

Remember back to that first HoH, where it was two teams. The winning team was Hayden, Lane, Matt, Britney, Monet and Kristen. The losing team was Enzo, Brendon, Rachel, Kathy, Ragan, and Annie. There was an unspoken understanding that Hayden wasn’t going to nominate anyone from his winning team, so they were all safe. (And they were; he nominated Brendon & Rachel, then when Brendon won PoV he nominated Annie.)

Enzo understands this dynamic, and so targeted every guy on the winning team to align with. The idea being that he would be safe if he aligned with HoH, and his alliance of four would be safe at least one week. That they could all vouch for each other during the blackout was icing on the cake.

Enzo did his Enzo thing, naming it the Brigade and giving everyone nicknames. This was day 1! For the first couple weeks the rest of the guys were like “yeah, whatever” and kind of rolled their eyes at him in the DR. But Enzo was committed, and his force of will bound them together in the early days.

During the first week everyone in the newly formed Brigade had a single non-Brigade person they were close to. Hayde/Kristen, Lane/Britney, Matt/Ragan, Enzo/Monet. Monet was the first side alliance to go. After that, as a free agent Enzo started working the entire house, dropping hints that the three pairs were tight. “Yo, Hayden and Kristen are tight, I think they’re an alliance, yo. Watch out for that shit!” He’d drop hints like that to Rachel each time she won HoH for all three remaining pairs. This ensured that no two Brigade members would ever be on the block at once, since every member was closest with a non-member in the house.

As it became clear that Brendon and Rachel were challenge monsters, the Brigade consciously and collectively decided to “send Enzo in” to get close to Brendon and Rachel, giving him a new side alliance. After Kristen went home, with Enzo’s help Hayden managed to get into this side alliance as well.

At no point in the entire game were Lane, Enzo or Hayden anybody’s target. All three played a fantastic social game, getting along with everyone, stepping on nobody’s toes, and appearing weak in competitions. This strategy was bulletproof, and let them sail easily to the final 3 uncontested, even after cutting Matty loose when he grew too close to Ragan.

Interestingly, Hayden, Lane and Matty ALL got “in too deep.” Both Hayden and Lane told their saide alliances in their goodbye messages that they would have chosen them over the Brogade, and I believe both meant it. I think only Matt (and Enzo) was Brigade to the bitter end, so it’s ironic that Matt was the one cut loose.

In the end, the Brigade’s gameplay – spearheaded by Enzo – was both flawless and phenomenal. I’ve never seen an alliance executed with such surgical precision before. My hat’s off to them, all of Enzo’s final 3 bragging about making history is, IMO, 100% justified.

That it drives the recappers nuts makes it all the sweeter. I love Lane (and Britney) to death, but in final two voting I would have to give my vote to Enzo first, Hayden second and Lane third. Because they all already know this, Lane is guaranteed 50k, and Hayden (the challenge monster) will almost certainly win the final HoH and thus 500k. Enzo could win America’s Choice, but I really want Britney to get that. I’ll be okay with Enzo getting it, just please not Brendon.

Another great Lane/shower reference last night. Funny how the edits are just rubbing it in now.

Excellent synopsis, Ellis Dee. I like the way Enzo slowly won you over by the end of the season. I felt bad for Britney too, but by the time she left the house her attitude was phenomenal. There’s definitely something between her and Lane. It will be interesting to see if anything comes of it. I did notice that she skipped Nick’s name in her speech, and Enzo brought it up.The final 4 were all players I wouldn’t ind winning, and I don’t ever recall that in a previous season.

Hear! Hear! After Rachel, Brendon and Ragan were out it made me wonder how the producers of this show can aim for such offensive players every year. Once they’re eliminated, it’s clear how much negative energy they bring. I enjoy the strategizing and gamesmanship without all the sickness. I think it can be a fun entertainment without all the creeps.

I just hope Britney can get some sort of entertainment gig somewhere. She’s a perfect foil for Dolly Parton, along the lines that Vicki Lawrence was for Carol Burnett. And have you noticed her Brigitte Bardot vibe? She’s a natural comedienne.

I was a huge fan of Enzo for the first 5 or 6 weeks. The recapper hate towards him started poisoning my mind, but really what made me hate him was the two weeks or so he went around calling my beloved Britney a “fucking cunt” every five minutes. Plus he makes the most vile noises when he eats, and he eats all the time. It really is gross.

Once he got on board with switching “the brains for the blonde,” his personal attacks on Britney dried up and the old Enzo I used to like shone through. Him eating is still just as nasty, but I don’t much care about that. He’s funny, and I would definitely gravitate toward him (and the Brigade) were I in that house. They’re just the kind of people that you want to like and be liked by. In other words, the popular kids. (Lane and Hayden both played football; you know they were popular. heh.)

Strategically their game was fantasic. Only having seen seasons 11 and 12, how do they stack up in BB history? Pairs don’t count; they should only be compared to alliances of 3 or 4 people.

There’s never been a 4 (or 3) person alliance like this. Never. Earlier in this season I posited that at some point they’d HAVE to break down and turn on each other. But other than Matt, they stayed together and did it. VERY impressive.
