Last night I spent the evening being paddled about on a small lake by twenty-two women in a really large canoe, and then had a nice get together at a coffee house. This morning I was on a great lake, and had breakfast at a historic restaurant, so rather than clean up at home, I had to shower at the yacht club. At the moment I am sitting in a comfortable chair in a large corner office, looking out the wall of windows while my clerk gets my day organized for me.

You know, it’s truly shocking how the blacks and gays do let their insistence on being treated equally with other people cause so much discomfort to the people who already have those rights. Don’t you realize they’re privileged?
On a more serious note, it is a remarkably uncomfortable feeling to have one’s conscience tweaked and one’s consciousness raised. That does not imply a single thing about seeking equal rights – but it does suggest to me that showing consideration for others is a two-way street. If someone (Toaster52 is a good example, based on a related thread) is honestly open and supportive but confesses to internal, visceral reactions, perhaps patience and honesty in helping him/her work through those feelings might be indicated?
I am curious what sort of “rebellion” the OP envisions. The picture of a battalion of Castro clones with Armani-designed uniforms carrying well-accessorized M-16 and deploying across Provincetown or WeHo is a truly scary one!
