Blame Canada!

I agree. The Maple Leaf is a great flag.

And Canada’s national anthem is about as martial an anthem as you’re going to find. It’s all about standing on guard, liberty, glory, and ‘patriot love’. Hell, it could be the anthem of the Montana Militia.

Still nothing compared to rockets red glare, bombs bursting in air, etc.

And the French (original) version translated of Oh Canada is a wee bit different…

Still, neither “O Canada” nor “The Star-Spangled Banner” even holds a candle to “La Marseillaise,” which includes such family-friendly lyrics as:

[quote]
March on, march on,
And drench our fields
With their tainted blood…

[quote]

FranticMad, I think the American Greens would, in many cases, be quite happy joining the Canadian Green party, rather than the NDP.

National anthems are, uh, interesting. Consider this:

Or this:

Here’s a fun one:

Finally, this stirring piece of work:

slightly off the anthem topic…

Y’all are welcome to annex our lovely country - JUST KILL CHRETIEN.

The man is a complete and utter waste of carbon.

Now THAT is a great post. Welcoming the takeover over our country AND wishing death upon someone. Fucking brilliant you are.

Our flag is great and will continue to be more than appropriate after marijuana is legalized here.

Well, since nobody else seems curious about the anthems, I’m going to guess New Zealand for the second one and Japan or Russia for the third. I’m probably way off, though…

Nope

Right. Russia was the third one. Any takers on the other three?

What, nobody else wants to play? I’m pretty sure I know the first one now, but I had to cheat by looking up national flags, so I’ll leave it for someone else.

Is the fourth one Greece?

Nope. They were, in order, Djibouti, Finland, Russia, and Monaco.

And at that I didn’t pick the weirdest…!

One more anthem to guess:

“And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep’s pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave…”

Third verse of the U.S. national anthem. But is it actually a part of the national anthem or just a part of the poem? I mean, did Congress only approve the first verse or something?

Interestingly, L.A. County has over twice the poulation of British COlumbia. (About 9 million in the County, vs. about 4 million in B.C.)

I am SOOO excited! Somebody said something mean to me!

Hey, Canuck Jackass…did you happen to notice that this whole thread has been rather tongue in cheek?

Tongue in cheek or not… wishing DEATH on an individual is NOT funny. If this was the States you could get prison time for wishing death on the nation’s leader…

Does that make me a jackass for thinking that way? If so, then so be it. I’ll wear the title proudly.

I suppose you also think sarcasm is the lowest form of humour.

No. Actually I like Czarcasm… even if he doesn’t like being so liked.

Now, let’s get back to the OP or bring me to the pit.

Hardly. This is why this medium is so full of misunderstanding.
Back to the subject at hand, and I will refrain from calling for his death, but I really, really dislike Chretien’s politics.
There. I said it nicely.
