Blizzard of '05

Ah the lucky Northeast. When the low gets near the eastern seaboard the eastern side of the counterclockwise circulation gets out over the ocean where it picks up moisure which it brings ashore and deposits as snow. In the Boston area (at least and maybe throughout New England) I think it’s called a Nor’easter.

20"+ on the ground, more on the way. Winds of sustained 35MPH+, gusts at 60MPH+. Temps around 10. Drifts of 6’+ and plowed snowbanks on all streets of 3 feet. It’s a full blown blizzard, worst since '78.

Good think I’ve got my skis, time to head to the Arboretum.

I’m not sure how much snow has actually fallen here in Springfield MA. The wind has been whipping up drifts all around my house, and the accumulations range from bare asphalt in the back of my driveway to a four-foot-deep drift on the side of my little pickup truck.

The actual snowfall seems to have stopped, though. UvulaDaughter and I were out shoveling the walk and the end of the driveway, then we came in for breakfast. I’m going to wait awhile before going out to tackle the rest of it, since they haven’t even plowed my street yet.

Maybe later I’ll get over to my mother’s place and clear her driveway. She’s got a snowblower.

Got a link to my own pictures here. I’m on Cape Ann, north of Boston, and right where the prediction is 12-24 inches total. The forecasters are saying drifts up to 6 feet. I’m just praying we don’t lose power since it’s arond 10 degrees right now.

Pretty much the same thing here: one side of the street has a foot or so; on the other side, the cars are just white bumps. The out-of-shape middle-aged men are out there shoveling, and by midafternoon their corpses will be stacked up at the corner like cordwood for the funeral home to pick up.

Check again, ETF. It’s more like 28-38" now. Although it’s hard to tell if it’s still actually snowing out there, as the wind is whipping stuff around pretty good. I could go out and start snowblowing, but it’s 6.4 degrees out, winds of 25-35 mph, and the wind chill is way down in the negative numbers. So, just to not disturb the cat in my lap and for no other reason, I think I’ll stay inside

It would appear tht I’ve dodged the bullet with only about 5" total. Although it’s quite windy, no additional snow is falling, so once the wind subsides, I’ll clear things out. ::BenGay smiley:: for those less fortunate.

Despite three solid days of Winter Storm Warnings, we got a mere 4 inches Friday night, and just a skinny inch last night. We got lucky. Right now, it’s sunny and just a whisper above zero F.

However, all you dear folks read my ice storm thread, so I stepped into my knee-high Wellies and tramped through this one. Let’s be careful out there.

You should come to my thing in Rockville Centre this coming Saturday; I’ll see if I can contact you via e-mail or IM. And yes, I’m a year older.

As for the snow: It stopped a bit before noon today & a plow came through, but the wind’s still blowing like a sumbitch. I can’t even imagine what hell I would have to go through if I lived by myself; I can’t even begin to think about shoveling snow. Man.

I’m in southern Nassau nearish Jones Beach: We’ve got more than a foot, but probably less than 18 inches. Cold as hell, windy too.

Here in Atlantic Canada, this is our 3rd blizzard in a week! One last Monday, one last Thursday, and one coming today. Each one dumped or will dump over 30 cm of snow, combined with 50-100 km/hour winds.

But, being true Maritimers we just shrug and tell each other “bit of a blow last night, eh?”… :stuck_out_tongue:

We just finished shoveling the driveway - not sure how long it is - hubby thinks over 100’, and most of it is 8’ wide, except where it widens at the garage. We only got about an inch of coverage, but the top 1/2" was an icy crust which had to be broken before it could be moved.

It’s gray and very windy, but no precip so far. Our neighborhood was plowed, but the roads are slippery, if the spinning wheels we occasionally hear are any indication. It’s nice and cozy inside - but we may light a fire anyway.

Just got my car dug out (12 inches, East Brunswick NJ). The snow was pretty fluffy so it wasn’t too heavy. And it was sort of nice to be sweating from something other than a hot flash.

A couple of Ibuprofen, a hot shower and a bowl of soup later, and my thighs are *still * cold. I think I’ll go hunting for my heating pad - I’m sure other parts will need it later on anyway.

We’ve got two feet here. I’m inside with the kids and Parallax is outside helping the neighbors as we have a snowblower and they don’t.

I posted some pictures at tanookie.multiply.com - more will be forthcoming when he comes in from snow removal as I have no idea how to get them off the camera.

We’re going nowhere - not that we usually have any reason to leave the house…

Looking outside I can see that Parallax and the neighbors have moved on to the elderly couple’s house across the street. I spoke with my mother and she has a basement condo and her windows are almost all covered up.

The dog did not want to try and break through the drifts so we had to hack a path for her. She hopped around to complete her morning patrol and constitutional and will probably not go near the door again. I think it is time to build a fire in the fireplace.

Well, just came in from the cold and it looked worse than it really was. Maybe I was just dressed right for it (ski bib and layers), but it’s a sort of comfortable 9.5 degrees out. I am, however, now a believer in snowblowers. My first thought, upon opening the garage was “I’m going to need a bigger boat”. But even though some of the drifts were higher than the snowblower, it handled them well. (Yah for dry, powdery snow!)

Snow’s pretty much done now – the sun was even trying to break through a few minutes ago. Just cold weather and wind left. Now I’m toying with the idea of getting the XC skis out and touring the neighborhood.

No gloating here, due to fear of earthquake and landslide gods. (But we have been out to the pool both days this weekend.)

Just curious - what’s with the crowds in the grocery store? Don’t people keep enough food at home to make it through a few days? I know that there’s a panic mentality that sets in, but the last thing I would want to do in a blizzard is fire up the car and drive on icy roads to an over-crowded market. This is why SPAM was invented, right? Always keep some on your shelf just in case.

Stay safe, everyone.

Well, it hasn’t snowed today but it has been windy as hell. The sound keeps scaring me! Some nice people came along and shoveled the walk and the driveway not too long ago. Looks like we got about a foot of snow, and I think there’s more coming again tonight.

Here’s some pictures from the front and back yards. See the red car? Yeah I have that to look forward to digging out. Bah.

I don’t understand the panic mentality either. Even if I hadn’t gotten milk on Friday (we were almost out, and we did break into the new gallon) we have plenty of other stuff here to keep us going.

Some people are weird…

The sun is shining, but it’s too cold for it to have any effect on the snow. My spousal unit went out to fill his car, and he said the main roads are pretty much dry. So, no snow day for me tomorrow. Alas.

I really didn’t see an unusual crowd at the store, and I went out on Saturday to buy a snow shovel at the A&P. There were plenty available. Maybe because the storm was given enough heads-up? (Or maybe others were like me and kinda sorta didn’t think we’d get this much? I’ve become a bit blaze about the annual Storm of the Century and maybe I should pay more attention.)
Anyway, this weather is a real boon for me. Now those skittish crows *will * come to my crow trap at the landfill! Nothing like frozen ground to make that dog food-eggs-corn-bread-peanuts feast in a contraption really appealing. Muwaaahaahaahaahaa, I mean, Yay!

As a former grocery store cashier I would like to tell people to go home! Honestly! We’ve not been stuck in for so long that we would all starve to death in the last 30 years. Don’t you have any food at home?

And to top it off people buy the strangest things. There are the generic people who stock up on TP, bottled water, canned goods and potato chips. I love the potato chip people - they always buy about 16 bags. Apparently if stranded in the snow the bags must make good insulation.

Then there are the people who buy a bunch of frozen goods - I guess they will just bury it all in the snow if the power goes out.

Then there are the insane people who need to be institutionalized. I remember a January storm in particular. The lines were very long and I was on express. The lines were so long that I could not see the end of mine. Every register was open. The store was a disaster. Snow was falling - these were the people on their way home from work. If you are unfamiliar with this phenomenon think of news casts where they show people lined up in stores before hurricanes… One lady waited in this line for a bag of sugar free candy. Another gentleman waited in this line to buy a Valentine’s Day card.

Oh and we are out of ice melt. The whole city is out of ice melt. We also don’t have any shovels or snow brushes. We aren’t hiding them out back. The purpose of the store is to sell our products and make money. Some other people came and bought the stuff before you. I can’t make ice melt magically appear in the store.

Eeek - I guess I had repressed all the memories and didn’t realize how raw that nerve was!
