I did a search, and came up with 0 threads about this show (at least, there are no threads with the name in the title). I’m surprised, because I recently finished watching it, and like a lot of the original stuff Netflix has produced, it’s pretty good quality. I would think it would appeal to folks here in particular because it’s very adult-oriented: all the main characters are middle-aged. It’s about a family in the Florida keys who own an inn: an elderly couple (mom played by Sissy Spacek), and their 4 adult children. The tagline: “We aren’t bad people, but we did a bad thing.” (you find out the bad thing by the end of the pilot, and then it goes back in time to piece together the events leading up to that)
It’s definitely not an “action-packed” piece at all, yet the story manages to remain compelling throughout. One of the four adult children, Danny, is the “black sheep” of the family and I thought he was an especially compelling character. It’s well-acted all around, but actor Ben Mendelsohn gives an especially strong performance in that role.
So has anyone else watched it? What did/do you think? I wouldn’t necessarily rave about it as being a great series, but it was interesting enough to hold my attention and Netflix has commissioned a second season, which I’ll also tune in for.
I’d agree - I liked it and would recommend it. Similar in tone to Rectify or The Affair and for my money, better than the latter. Really excellent cast.
That said, I was trying to recommend it recently and couldn’t remember what it was called! But that probably says more about me.
I enjoyed it right up to the last part of the last episode - the “surprise” at the end had me going “Really??”
But I’ll probably watch the next season, at least the first couple of episodes, out of curiosity.
There are some things about the story and the sibling interactions that I had a hard time
accepting, and overall, I mostly felt sorry for Danny and I thought the father was a jerk. Above all, it made me want to vacation in the Keys.
Count me in as someone waiting for season 2. I really enjoyed season 1. I don’t need action packed if there is a compelling the story line. I’m curious to see how season 2 comes about knowing that Ben Mendelsohn has signed on to be a regular, full cast member.
Yes, I watched the complete first season. I liked it more than my wife did. Not enough action for her taste and the suspense was bit slow to build. I enjoyed it enough, but I’m not on pins and needles waiting for season 2. The main actor (can’t remember his name, guy from Friday Night Lights) is not a favorite of mine. Actually, I liked Danny’s character quite a bit, so I don’t know how appealing season 2 can be.
Or you could just tell him - it’s Danny (I also mentioned this actor in the OP). Seems like it would be for more flashback stuff, although I don’t know how necessary that will be since the entire first season was basically told in flashback.
I watched up until the seventh or eighth episode. I wanted to know how the characters got to the moment in the flashforward, but I no longer enjoyed the build up of watching them get there. Danny remained interesting the entire time, but no one else did. So, I just read a recap.
Right, so Danny will appear in flashbacks. Or maybe as a ghost conscience or something. Either way, hard to imagine the same level of interest in his character.
I watched three or four episodes to see what it was about. While I can see that it’s done well from a technical standpoint (writing, acting, camera, etc.) it just isn’t a story that I find very interesting. Especially in a series format where the tendency is to drag everything out as long as possible. As a two-hour movie, I’d have more appreciation for it.
I’ll revive this to say we finally got around to watching it. Good show, IMO, even though I’m not a fan of Ms. Spacek. The Danny character is played to perfection. Even though it got off to a slow start (think Breaking Bad), the character arcs have been worth the wait. We’re about to start season two, and I’m reading where there is a season three coming? Not sure how they’ll sustain the story line, but we’ll see. It took me awhile to realize where I’d seen the actress playing Meg before; she was the downstairs neighbor that Don Draper was having an affair with in Mad Men. I was surprised to find out that both Ben Mendelsohn and Jacinda Barrett are Australian; I couldn’t detect any accent from either of them.
Just finished season two, and now I see that Netflix hasn’t yet picked up a season three. If that was the series ending, it was kind of lame and left a number of unresolved stories.
I can’t imagine them not picking up the third season. Obviously I don’t know how viewership numbers look, but it’s a well-done show that has been left up in the air with the season 2 finale.
