Board performance problems

Anyone else having problems with the Search function this morning?

First time I tried to use it, I got the ‘you need to wait 120 seconds between searches, try again in 117 seconds’ message. (OK, maybe I inadvertently clicked the button twice. I didn’t think so, but give it the benefit of the doubt.)

Tried again not quite 2 minutes later, go the same message only with 17 seconds instead of 117 seconds. (OK.)

Counted slowly to 20. Tried again. Same message, this time with 116 seconds. (Not good.)

Get out of SDMB, reopen it, try again. Get same message as with first try.

No idea. Just saying that if “last visited” is (usually) maintained properly when you switch browsers and/or computers, then it can’t be cookie-based.

And closed the browser, got some work done, came back, and same problem. Anytime when I try to search, and it’s been more than 2 minutes since my last attempt, it thinks I’ve just tried to do a search 3-4 seconds ago, and tells me to wait 116 or 117 seconds.

The usual: says I last logged in right now. All threads marked read. Tiresome!

Maybe it’s both. Pick the later of account or cookie.

I suspect there are multiple problems going on.

All the research I’ve done on this issue says it’s server-based.

Okay, I don’t know if this narrows the problem down any, but this happened today when I tried an experiment: Before logging on, I looked at one (1) thread in MPSIMS. Then I deleted the cookies cache. Later I logged on. Clicked on User CP in order to see the New Subscribed Thraeds. There were nine. BUT … All the MPSIMS threads – not just the one I looked at, but ALL the MPSIMS threads in New Subscribed Threads – were marked as Read. That was three threads out of the nine. The ones in other forums were still marked Unread.

Interesting too that the MPSIMS threads marked as Read were still included in New Subscribed Threads. Whenever I get zapped to the extent that ALL threads regardless of forum are marked as Read, then I just get a “No New Subscribed Threads” message.

Again, I usually don’t take a look at the Board before logging on. But it seems to have picked up on what I looked at this time. Next time I’ll pick a different forum and try.

Zapped again, completely this time, after my first thread.

Zapped again! Immediately. Logged on, last time visited was about 11:45pm, which is about when I logged off last night. Clicked on User CP to see the new threads and WHAM! Last log-in at 7:47am – now – and everything erased! This is getting worse.

It will be time soon for me to decide whether to pay more money to re-up. If this can’t be fixed, and we can’t have the courtesy of an explanation why it can’t be fixed, then maybe I’ll just drop down to Guest and not part with any more money.

Would it be worth trying Tapatalk? It has a “Timeline” mode, sorting all threads by last post. So all you have to do is remember the last time you were here, then scroll to last posts newer than that. Its Subscribed mode also does the same thing. All these aren’t limited to 2 minutes.

Also - no ads, and a handy Participated threads view. So you have 2 lists of threads at your disposal. One for low priority, one for high or whatever.

I don’t know what Tapatalk is. But I think it has something to do with smartphones? Which I don’t have.

It’s an app for iOS or Android.

Gah! Techno speak! Get thee away, Satan!

Anyone else getting a ton of “400 Bad request” errors recently?

Yup. Since TPTB seem to be ignoring reports about the “last visited” problem that does cause an impact, I don’t bother reporting anything that doesn’t cause an impact (eg, “Bad Request” - at least for me refreshing makes them go away without side-effects).

I get a few of those, but at least they don’t cause much of a problem … unless I’m just then posting a message and forgot to copy the entire post first, and then it gets lost.

Zapped again.

And the Board and the Straight Dope main page were both down for 20 minutes from about 2pm our time, 2am in Chicago. I’ve reported, in this thread I think, similar 20-minute downings at this exact same time.

This is getting to be too troublesome. My two-year Board subscription expires next January, but what I usually do is re-up in July. I use my US credit cards periodically to keep them active, and I usually make a bunch of purchases in July of each year. The Board membership is included since it’s a US purchase. I do two years at a time. Thirty bucks is nothing to me, but I don’t see why I should keep paying money in the face of what is increasingly looking like a “Fuck You” attitude on the part of the powers that be. I’m going to withhold my usual payment in July until I see some progress on fixing this problem or we’re at least given an explanation for why it can’t be fixed. Otherwise, I’ll just drop down to Guest and use the Board for free.
