Book Fairies--Want to keep your kid or do you need to drop out?

Okay, it’s a new year and I thought I would open back up the Book Fairies project so those who can no longer do it have an out and those who would like to participate have a chance.

There are four months left in the program. That’s four books left to send to your child you adopted. I have had several Book Fairies drop out or I haven’t heard from them so I assume they have dropped out. This has left me with a few kids without Fairies. Many Dopers have been kind enough to send extra books and I have a good stash built up so no kid is going without.

If you are a Book Fairy and would like to keep your child, post or email me and let me know. I completely and totally understand if you can’t do it any longer and I thank you for your participation so far.

Also, as the program ends in April I always try to get each child a special new hardback book…”Oh, the Places You Will Go” by Dr. Suess. I have tried to contact several agencies and get the book at a bulk rate or donated and haven’t had much luck so far. If you are interested in buying this book for a child in the class, let me know so I’ll know how many I will have left to purchase.

Thank you again for all the donations, the books, the art supplies, the kind words and the praise for this program. I love these kids and I love being able to do this each year.

May you continue to have a blessed 2004.

Aries – I was just wondering the other day if you got the books I shipped before Christmas – I assume so. I’ve got one more book I couldn’t fit into that box, plus, as I told you, I’m going to snag freebies on the coloring and activities books my company publishes – thought I’d send them all at the same time, probably around the end of this month. (I keep thinking that my life will get less complicated soon, despite all evidence to the contrary.)

I believe this will finish off my year’s worth – if I’m a book short, let me know [you’ve got my email address], and I’ll head back to the bookstore (don’t throw me in that briarpatch! )

Bless you for organizing this and staying on top of it!

I’m in for the duration, but I believe I sent enough books to cover my kid till the end. I’ll gladly kick in for the end of the year book too - if it’s all the same to you, I’ll send you a check to cover one or two rather than having to spend the money on postage.

How much do the books cost?

I also think I’ve sent books through the end of the year, although I thought I’d get a nice hardback copy of Black Beauty* for Kenya for the last book, and I would be glad to get a copy of the Dr. Suess book as well. So take Kenya’s name off your list and I’ll get you both books soon. Let me know if you need more books to fill in the gaps for other kids–the only thing I like better than buying books for myself is buying bookd for other people!

I’m still in!

In fact I have a box all set to come down there. And the only hold up is … I’m quite embarrassed about this that I’m out of packing and duct and electrical tape around this place.

I mean, I thought this stuff just multiplied in our house and I can’t find a stinkin’ roll and I cannot remember to buy more.

So, that lousy excuse out there, I will be sending said package with proscribed books for the rest of the year in one big lump sum.

Super!

I believe the Dr. Suess book is like $12…I’ll check and make sure. I’m trying to find the cheapest place to get them.

Yes, twickster I believe I did get a package from you. I’ll go back and check to make sure. Can you tell me the name of one of the books…that’s more likely to jog my memory!

For those who have already sent their year’s worth…thanks! I’m not trying to hound you anymore than I already do. I just want to give those who might need to drop out the opportunity to do so and others to sign up if they missed out last time.

Thanks again!

There was a Neil Gaiman juvenile, and most of the rest were nonfiction – one was about police techniques, one on early hominids, etc.

(For those who think I’m a complete nerd – (1) the first shipment was all novels and (2) yes, yes I am.)

Yep…got them! I knew the names of some of the books would jog my memory.

Thanks again!

i’m still in. anton’s “oh the places you will go” will be included in the package.

i’m hoping the lastest package got there in one place.

I’m still in. I believe I sent the December and January books together, so I only need to round up 3 more for the year.

I’m still in!

I sent you a check this morning to cover a book for Sarah and whatever you want to do with the rest - another book for another kid or treats for the class or a double bourbon for you!

I think it’s a wonderful thing you’re doing, and it’s great that you let so many of us help out. You’re a nice lady!

Great! I will definitely find a use for your check.

I tend to pull together bags at Valentine’s Day, something at Easter and then our big “End of the Year Aries is Going to Cry at the Thought of Leaving Her Babies” party.

Hey, it’s you guys I should be thanking (and hope I do regularly).

This program has been a huge hit with the kids, the teacher, the principal, local community leaders that have come in and visited. I brag on my group of “internet friends” all the time.

I visited the kids yesterday and my buddy, Anton, told me that he had a gift for his Book Fairy. He had gotten a silver cross necklace for Christmas that he wanted me to send to rocking chair. I told him that it was a wonderfully kind gesture but that I would hate for him to decide a few days from now that he wished he had kept his necklace. (Plus, I’m sure his parents might not have been thrilled). He said he would think about it during my visit and let me know at the end of class. Before I left he said that he probably should keep the necklace but that he just wanted to do something as nice for his Book Fairy as she has done for him.

If you think that sending a couple books a month to some kids at an inner city school in Birmingham labama is no big deal and hasn’t made any kind of difference you would be very, very wrong.

Hey! How can we got involved in this project? Will you be sending out a new post when it starts up again? I am definitley interested in helping.

And I can spell “definitely”, too. Sorry! I just can’t type.

If you will shoot me an email with your email address I’ll give you all the details. Aries28kp@hotmail.com

Or you can search back through MPSIMS over the last few months…I’ve had several threads giving the info.

Thanks!

I am still in!
I sent 4 books in November so I think I only need to scare up a couple more… tho I should make sure she has reading material for summer.

This month is a VERY short month for money. I was off work two weeks at Christmas. BUT I hope to be caught up by March. I am POSITIVE I can find the money to buy one little girl a few more books.

My apologies also on not getting money to you for a Zoobooks subscription. It has had to slide down my priority list. But I still plan on it…

No apology needed. You have done more than enough and even if the Zoobooks don’t make it this year…there’s always next school year.

We all have money issues that pop up we can’t control. Don’t sweat it about the books.

Thanks again!

that anton… he is some kid. what a sweetie.
