This place is an old man’s fart cavern shell of itself. Does anyone have an explainer as to “what the fuck happened” to all the people who made the sort of insightful posts that made me think this was “where the smart people went to talk online” when I was a child?
Remember that time this place went pay-to-post? I remember wondering then if there’d be a lot of loss, since monetizing discussion online is difficult. I wasn’t lurking hard then, though.
Facebook coming into existence and opening up the floodgates of targeted content also feels deeply relevant.
Who needs popcorn?
Suicide by mod approaching in 10, 9…
Yep, go back to lurking, boy.
The story behind the “Jamal” comment. Yeah, it’s good, but probably not in the way you’re thinking.
Nobody went anywhere. Do you really believe all advertising you see? And if you hate it so much, why are you still here? Nobody’s forceing you to stay.
Just legends of sucking shit online appearing in my own fucked variety show. I remember thinking your posts were bad when I was a tyke. Holy shit.
Imagine thinking this sounds cool. Like you put those characters in that order. Truly incredible. I can’t tell if it’s supposed to sound tough or racist but it’s a real gem.
They’re not dead, son. They’re hiding.
Well, yeah. That’s why I’m such a popular fellow.
I sure do, but that was quite awhile ago. What was your Doper handle back then?
Y’know, though I’m a Boomer, I’m generally sympathetic to the notion that Millennials and Gen Z’ers missed out on a few breaks that we got. Like college that didn’t leave you saddled in debt for life. Like a labor movement (courtesy of our predecessors) that still had enough potency that workers’ pay hadn’t fallen through the floor.
We also helped accomplish a few things along the way, like civil rights, women’s rights, tried to stop a war in Vietnam, tried to expose the insanity of the U.S. supporting thuggish Third World regimes simply because they were ‘anticommunist.’ (I say ‘helped’ because I have to be honest: the leaders of most of these intertwined movements were older than us, what we now call the Silent Generation. Enough of them weren’t all that silent, thank goodness!)
And the gains we helped make happen, we did while being a minority of our own generation: it’s clear in retrospect that most Boomers were conservative all along. Millennials and Gen Z have the advantage of being much more united in their desire to move the country in a progressive direction. So what’s holding you back?
What I’m saying here is that there’s no simple morality play here, where one generation did great things and a later generation is pissing it away, or where one generation fucked everything up and has left a later generation with the cleanup. Things aren’t usually nice and simple, white hats and black hats. If only.
But when they are that simple, the white hats better not be caught fighting each other, rather than uniting against the black hats. Just sayin’. First we make the world safe for those intramural squabbles, then we engage in them once again.
I choose not to join in the general pile on here because I can remember when I was young, full of idealism, and unfamiliar with how the world actually works. I’m not so senile that I’ve forgotten marching to give 18 year olds the right to vote (and I also remember that Richard Nixon won 48% of the 18-24 year old vote in the first election after they won the right to vote, and then didn’t turn out at all in the 1976 election.)
The difference between the Boomer version of Organism and the 2020 version is that today’s young, disaffected idealists have social media to blast their naivete not to just their families but around the world, and to have the older generation, not just their families, push back.
So rage away, all you junior Boomers. Just remember that phrases like, “get out of the way or into the ground,” and calling us dumbshits isn’t going to win you any support - here or anywhere outside of your own sad little echo chambers.
Releasing Yog Sothoth in the unholy bargain. :smack:
So you’ve been “lurking” here for years? Why the fuck would you do that? Answer - you wouldn’t. Trock.
Donald?
Last weekend seems so long ago.
I don’t understand why anyone is seriously responding to this juvenile moron with aspirations to be a troll when he grows up. Ignore him in the Pit and let him rant in the regular forums until he’s banned and call it a good day’s work.
My heart is breaking.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Raise the drinking age to 30. Globally.

Yeah. I guess inability to handle ones liquor is a generational thing.
