Borderlands

Well, might have to check it out. Don’t mind the FPS aspects, though I assume there isn’t anything like the stop action VATS system for this game. I’m playing through the DLC’s for Fallout 3 atm, but looking for a new game as everything I have is sort of getting a bit stale.

Nope. There’s no VATS nonsense.

I like VATS :p. To each their own though, I guess…I can certainly do the real time FPS thingy as well.

Its similar to Fallout 3 in that its a post apocaliptic FPS but the gameplay is a lot closer to diablo than fallout.

I just started it up. I like the art design. Makes everything pop. I’ll give single player a whirl before seeing if any one else wants to play coop on PC.

Oh man the UT3 engine rears it’s ugly head again.

Common, no AA? I know console gamers are blind to jaggies, but common!

Some nice DX10 effects though… grumble grumble.

I’m really digging this game. The loot system is a lot of fun. The quests are nothign special so far, but they get the job done.

The weapons rock!

The main problem I have so far it’s that it feels very lonely. Where are all the NPC’s?

Just laughed myself to tears in a co-op game with my brother and our friend. We started punching cars and managed to get one to flip over the fence into Fyrestone. Not barely either, it cleared the fence by a good five feet.

Then we got it stuck on the roof of med clinic. It was like being a kid when your football would land on top of the house.

ARGH!

Please someone tell me there is a way to stop the game from auto equipping stuff! I HATE it! The stupid game keeps swapping out my equipment every time I put something new into my inventory and 50% of the time it swaps my kick ass gear for some rusty piece of crap!

The interface suffers heavily from console-screw. The use key in particular is overloaded like that. If you push it twice within some period of time, it assumes you want to reload. If you hold it down, it’ll grab nearby money and ammo in the process, which is great, but only as long as you’re not picking up a weapon. If you’re picking up a weapon and hold it down, it’ll treat that as “replace my currently equipped weapon with the new one”.

It’s obnoxious and winds up slowing down the looting process, and you can forget looting in combat, but this is what you get when games are designed around only using four buttons.

This. Buy Torchlight instead and don’t support lousy console games on PC.

I’m guessing you’re probably holding the button down too much. If you hold the button down, it equips the gun you’re using. It took me a little while to figure it out.

Ahhh! It told me it would pick up all nearby ammo so it’s my default action. Ok, so I won’t hold it down when picking up items. That should help things. Thanks!

I’m having lots of fun with it. Like some reviewer said, it’s very easy to ‘just one more quest’ until 2 am.

Some minor niggles though: I dislike enemies respawning so quickly. It gives the same rushed feeling of the CoD games, and I really don’t like that. Let me take my sweet time to explore, thank you very much. Also, the buyback feature is a bit tricky. I got some level 25 guns at level 12, and they looked really nice. My pack was full though, so I sold them, thinking I could buy them back later. No such luck. The inventory restocks about as frequently as enemies respawn, it seems.

Still, excellent fun, and I love the graphics style.

I think it only auto-equips if you’re looking at/targeting the gun when you hold down the button. If you’re targeting some ammo or whatever, it just grabs the gun.

Got it last night and played up to Level 13. Since I’m looking at it mostly from an RPG background, the game is pretty much pure fluff, but high-quality entertaining fluff. Gotta try out some co-op action tonight. What I find most amusing is the way they completely co-opted the MMO grinding experience, color-coded loot drops and everything.

We’ve got to get a co-op game going some time soon. There’s a guy I play with a lot from another messageboard. The more people you have playing, the better stuff you come across.
By the way, the first person that gets me in a co-op game gets an alien weapon.

I haven’t gotten to play much, I lost to 9-toes (shut up, those dogs HURT and I was equipped with a crappy pistol on Lilith), respawned and it froze my computer entirely (which usually means hardware/driver resource issue) now whenever I get in game (i.e. past a loading screen, load a file) it does the same.

On a positive note, what I did play was wonderful, and I really, really love the art style. Also, I’m pretty sure the opening theme is the ultimate party-game song, the beat is so perfect that you could just keep making up verses and then make the person whose turn it was do something embarrassing if they run out of ideas.

Hmm, now that the PC version is out, would anybody like to organize a PC co-op game? I’m available from about 10:30pm (EST) onwards, and have characters at levels 5, 9, 15, and 22.

It might also be fun to start with 4 new characters, if we can’t get four people with comparable levels.

This game is extremely fun. Needs a patch pretty badly for some things, but the game itself is a blast to play.
