Boston-area Dopers: Come see my play!

This announcement is being posted with mod permission.

As some of you many know, IRL I run a theatre company called Theatre on Fire. We’re a small company, but we’ve built up a reputation over the last 4 years for high-quality, socially-relevant theatre. We’ve got a new show that opened last weekend, and I’d like to entice some Dopers to come check it out.

The show is Miss Margarida’s Way by Roberto Athayde. Bring your backpack and maybe an apple for teacher as your take a seat at your desk in Miss Margarida’s biology class. Be ready for pop quizzes: you’re encouraged to talk back, answer questions, and write on the blackboard during intermission. Originally banned in Athayde’s native Brazil, audiences and critics in over 50 countries have since cheered this allegory about totalitarianism, which played twice on Broadway with Estelle Parsons in the starring role.

Detailed info, directions and tickets are available at our website: www.theatreonfire.org

We opened last weekend and run for two more weekends. Reviews of the show have been posted on CurtainUp and The Boston Globe.

I’ve got two special offers for Dopers: first, I’m offering FREE tickets for this Thursday and Friday (5/14 & 5/15). Just PM me with your name and the number of tickets (or email info@theatreonfire.org). Second, I’m offering a Doper Discount for all other shows - $5 off any ticket! (Our ticket prices are already wicked cheap - $15 Thursdays, $20 Fridays and Saturdays - so that’s 25-33% off!). To take advantage of that, just use the code SDMB when ordering.

Feel free to ask questions in this thread or PM me if you need more info. And feel free to introduce yourself when you come to the show - I’m there every night and you’ll know who I am. Thanks in advance for supporting live theatre!

Wish I lived closer! I hope your production goes brilliantly, and everyone enjoys themselves immensely.
On a side note, as a high school drama teacher, no where near your expertise, do you find it hard to just relax and enjoy other live performances, or do you find yourself mentally directing and picking up on flaws? It nearly drives me nuts these days to watch high school theater performances (not ours) because I want to leap up and say “Enunciate! Watch your blocking! If you dry up, don’t just stand there, say SOMETHING!”:stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks for your well-wishes! I see a LOT of theatre and have no problem relaxing and enjoying other shows. There are moments when I think “I would have done that differently” or something, but nothing major. I go see shows for enjoyment, not to critique

What a coincidence; I just read the review in the Boston Globe yesterday. Do you have any commentary on it? I always wonder what it must be like to read a review about yourself.

I live too far away (outlying regions of the Globe subscription area), but I wish you luck. You’ve got to be off to a good start by getting a big write-up with color photo!

I learned quickly not to put too much stock in reviews - good or bad. It’s just part of the game you have to play. In this particular case, I might have wished that they didn’t send a critic with a bias against participatory shows to a participatory show, but what can you do? All in all it was a decent review and, as you said, a full page article with photo is never a bad thing!

One-time bump in case anyone missed the offer from this morning.

Now that I’ve seen this thread, I’m kind of wishing that I hadn’t volunteered to work on Saturday :frowning:

Are you doing any shows this summer? I have tickets to the aquarium I need to use by the end of July, so I’ll be in Boston at some point over the next couple months.
