There are a lot of little eateries around the Somerville Theater – it’s not far from Tufts. I used to go to the ST to see the art films and animation festivals. Also a few live performances *(I saw Christine Lavin there – and got to sing backup to “Sensitive New Age Guys” behind her on stage.)
I’ll talk to Mrs. Cal. Maybe we can make it. But we’ll have to find a sitter for our daughter.
No need to be so bashful, Turpentine! You’re welcome to e-mail anytime! (I’m sure that just made your day. ;))
As for the Dopefest, I am very tempted, but not quite sure if I’ll be able to come. If I did, though, I’d need someone to give me explicit directions on how to get to the theater, as I have the absolute worst sense of direction.
As we have yet to settle on details, I would like to offer a suggestion: we do the matinee and then repair to some local eatery where we can nosh/discuss and those disinclined or unable to go to the movie can perhaps join us.
Admittedly, post matinee will be an odd time, 3:30 or so, but restaurants are less likely to be crowded at such a time, and I’m thinking others may be like me and eat at irregular times on weekends anyway. Pre-matinee lunch would be fine with me as well, I’m just thinking gathering afterward would give greater flexibilty. Or, heck, we could do both!
As far as drinking/noshing establishments convenient to the Somerville Theatre, I’ll see if I can scare up a few suggestions.
For drinking I’d suggest Redbones, good on-tap beer lineup, and its been a while since I had a chance to Spin the Wheel, but it’s not much of a “noshing” place and it might frighten off the vegetarians.
The Burren also has decent beer lineup, but v. small food menu.
Cambridge Common is good, but too far to walk if the weather is nasty. Considering this is Boston in February…
Does anyone know what restaurant replaced Talulah’s? I think it opened a little while ago.
Rudy’s is only a couple of blocks away, if anyone wants Mexican and margaritas.
Thinking some more.
I hope to return later with brilliant ideas.
Geo and Motor, thanks for the bump. You both read my mind.
missbunny, Tymp and Cal, good to hear from you all again.
Here’s the current plan. We’ll catch the 2:00 showing of Steamboat Bill, Jr. (wouldn’t want to keep andygirl out too late on a school night) then adjourn to a late lunch/early dinner (think of it as a Sunday Dunch), then, for those who wish, whisked off by red line subway to Toscanini’s in Central Square for ice cream (It is said that if a strawberry leads a good and virtuous life, the greatest destiny to which it can aspire is to wind up in Toscanini’s strawberry ice cream).
I checked out Redbone’s the other night, and the food is decent, but Motorgirl is right about it not being particularly vegetarian-friendly (but then, what barbecue joint is?). I need to make one more reconnaissance trip and I’ll see if Rudy’s looks any good (I’ve been jonesing for really good mexican food since I moved here). I’ll also find a good spot to meet before the movie.
The movie is reserved seating, by the way. I’d be happy to pick up a block of tickets ($15.00 each), but I’ll need to know who all’s coming so I know how many to get. Post here or e-mail me by Saturday morning (January 27). I’ll send an e-mail from home this evening to everyone who’s expressed an interest in this thread.
For those of you who don’t know your way around Boston too well, not to worry. The Somerville Theater’s right off the red line subway. If you’re driving in, there’s a big park-and-ride lot at Alewife. For anyone coming by bus or train, there’s a red line stop right under South Station.
I’ll follow up with the rest of the details next week. Looking forward to seeing you all.
I like Rudy’s, but where you moved here FROM will determine whether or not you think it is good Mexican food. I find that folks from the TX/NM/AZ area don’t seem to think much of New England Mexican, but I like it!
::slight hijack::
I also like Sol Azteca in Brookline. More Mexican than TexMex, I think. It is on the green line, either B or C, near the Elephant Walk.
I’m gonna nose in anyway. I’ have seen both, and may I humbly suggest going to Nosferatu instead? It’s scarey, cool looking (German expressionism. Discuss!), and what with Shadow of a Vampire coming out, timely. I mean, I love the vermin as much as the next red blooded American, but…
Besides, we’ve seen how andy gets when she’s full of diet coke. She’ll be OK.
Is it Aquarium? I can’t remember exactly where Talulah’s was, but Aquarium is right on the edge of Davis. It opened sometime in the last year. They had a good pumpkin soup when I went.
Also, you have to at least go to Redbones for a beer in the basement so you can see the artwork by Charba. They’re a local group of artists (now defunct, I believe) who paint on pieces of found wood. It’s great stuff.
I thought of that, but the show would get out at about 8:30, which wouldn’t leave a whole lot of time for quality discussionizing. And if a.g. is busing down from Hanover, I’m not sure what time the last return bus leaves. I asked in the OP which flick people wanted to see and nobody said a word one way or the other. If there’s a last-minute groundswell for Nosferatu, that works for me, too. I may wind up seeing them both myself anyway.
I gather Totoro, Motorgirl, Geobabe and andygirl are definites. Could the rest of you chime in, too (I should probably check my home e-mail, the rest of you may have already done just that). I just want something unambiguous to point to if I get a ticket and you stand me up. It makes it a lot easier when I have to send my goons out to collect or break your shoelaces.
I guess I didn’t say so explicitly, but I had kind of planned on everyone paying me back for their tickets. I just thought the fest would be more festive if we all got seats together.
I have been downgraded to a 0% definite. I realized while sorting through a pile of mail last night that I am committed to attending a reception for my boyfriend’s mom and her new husband on Feb 4th.
I won’t make it to the matinee, but I think I can meet you all for some noshing, or perhaps just in time for Nosferatu, if the plan is to do both movies.
While it’s not as sexy as Redbones or Talulah’s, don’t forget the Davis Square Bertucci’s. At 3:30, we can probably occupy the whole downstairs and play bocce.
