Boston Dopefest, with a side of Film Club

I don’t mean to be pushy, but it was this coming Sunday that we were going to meet?

I won’t be making the film, but I need to plan ahead a bit in order to find you all.

So where are we eating?
I don’t really mind where we go as long as it’s not super-pricey, but I need to know where it is so I can figure out how to get there.

andygirl has talked me into seeing both films, so I thought I’d push the dinner back to about 4:30 or 5:00, with some of use scampering out in time for the 7:00 movie.

The place will be either Redbones or Rudy’s, both near Davis Square in Somerville. I’m checking out Rudy’s tonight to see if it’s any good. I’ll post directions tomorrow.

Expected attendees: andygirl, Geobabe, ENugent, Turpentine, Tymp, Totoro, Robot Arm.

Possibles: missbunny, Serendipity, CalMeacham and Mrs. Cal, Redwing.

If there are any changes to that list, would you post here, please.

So long as Turp’s still up for giving me a ride, I’ll be there for dinner.

Well, I can’t make the earlier show, but food and the later show sounds good. There is also a high chance of Mrs. Redwing.

You’ll have to move me to the “possible” list - I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to make it. If I do, I’ll have Mr. Nugent in tow.

'Bout time to get this thing nailed down, idnit?

Just joined recently and was wondering how many SDopers were in the area. So “hi” to all of you! I can’t come this weekend, but I would LOVE to meet some of you- perhaps the next time around.

I hope you guys have a great time.

Rudy’s – 248 Holland Street
Redbone’s – 55 Chester Street

I cast my vote for Rudy’s. I have never been there. I have not been to Redbone’s either. Why am I voting? Because this needs to be settled.

All in favor?

All opposed?

Anyone? Bueller … Bueller … ?

I haven’t been to either place.

I vote Rudy’s. Why?

Because that would make two votes and therefore it will be settled faster than if I vote against Tymp.

Sorry.

Mrs. Cal’s feeling bad, and we haven’t got a sitter for MiniCal.

Sorry to hear that, Cal. Hope she feels better soon. You’ll both be missed.

Rudy’s at 5:00. The reservation is for Adams, party of ten.
Expected: andygirl, Geobabe, Turpentine, Serendipity, Tymp, Totoro, Redwing and Mrs. Redwing, Robot Arm.

Excused: CalMeacham and Mrs. Cal, Motorgirl.

Fell off the face of the Earth: missbunny, waterj2, Phobos.
Directions: The Somerville Theater is right on Davis Square, and Rudy’s is just a short walk. There’s a lot of on-street parking, but also a lot of cars. (I tried posting mapquest links, but somehow they got truncated. I’ll see if I can find some links that post correctly, or you can hit mapquest and search for “Rudy’s” and “Somerville Theater” in “Somerville, MA”)

Much easier would be to take the red line subway. For anyone coming in from out of town, try this: Find Rte. 128/I-95, it’s the ring highway around Boston. Northwest of the city, it intersects with Rte. 2. Take Rte. 2 inbound towards Boston and get off at the Alewife exit (there’s a big parking garage and a circular “T” logo). Park in the garage ($4.00) and go down into the station. Take the red line one stop to Davis Square.

From the Davis Square station: On the way out, just after you pass through the turnstiles, turn right. Go up the escalators to street level, make another sharp right and go through the double doors. Holland St. is right in front of you. The Somerville Theater is about 10 steps to your right (The marquee lights say “RVILLE THEATER”, some of the letters were burned out, literally), Rudy’s is about 8 blocks to the left, just past the fire station.

I have movie tickets for Geobabe, andygirl and myself. Everyone else is still invited, but you might want to call the box office and reserve a seat. There’ll be a little time to kill between the matinee and dinner, so if you get there before 5:00, we’ll be in the coffeehouse attached to the theater.

Oh, if anyone does come to the coffeehouse and needs to recognize us, I have a goatee and I’ll be wearing a black vest. The password is “Cecil sent me.”

Excellent! I would like to re-emphasize that any and all Dopers are welcome. This includes newbies, lurkers and the terminally shy, even those who have not RSVPed. You are hereby invited to just show up, come to the movie, come to the restaurant, just do it!

For further clarification in terms of recognition, look for man with goatee accompanied by short girl with obnoxiously curly hair.

bump

Just like I did in the last thread…

I love that dirty water (Oh, Boston, you’re my home), however, I’m currently at college (er, “university”) in Ontario, so the commute will be a little much for me. But have fun, kids, and be sure to tell us all about it!

One last bump from me to once again encourage anyone who is still thinking about it to come on down! You know you want to!

I can’t believe I’m the first one posting! I just got back to western Mass; Turpentine and Serendipity, both of you gals have to have been home hours ago, where the hell are ya? Both of them are, FTR, very charming and fabulous ladies.

The movie, attended by Robot Arm, andygirl and myself, was excellent. Those who did not attend may commence kicking themselves.

Those who said they would attend and didn’t show were talked about and mocked mercilessly. Robot Arm got quite a charge out of being the only male in the group.

What, you expected me to post first? Jeez, I was pretty quiet throughout dinner – what makes you think I suddenly have something to say now?

I met up with Turpentine in Allston before heading over to Rudy’s for dinner. I was exceedingly proud of myself for finally understanding the difference between Harvard Avenue and Harvard Square. Yay me! Anyway, Turp almost walked by me on the street, but I think we both got the “Doper vibe” as RobotArm aptly called it and all was well. We had a nice ride over, during which I got to see an example of Turp’s taxidermy work – a very cool looking fish. I also made reassuring if not entirely helpful comments on our location. (Turp: I think we’re still on Mass Ave. Me: OK, yeah, that sounds right. Good job.)

After reaching Somerville and finding a place to park, Turpentine and I wandered around for about half an hour looking for the restaurant. The cashier at Domino’s pizza was incredibly helpful, though, and pointed us in the right direction. I don’t think Turp believed me when I said cashiers were more authoritative than the average person on the street, but the random man walking down the road was far less helpful than the cashier. Plus, the Domino’s guy was wearing a uniform, so I felt that I could trust him.

Once in the restaurant, we spotted the core trio of andygirl, RobotArm, and Geobabe – all smashing individuals. In the course of the evening, I learned that gargoyles aren’t really gargoyles unless they spout water, where the name “quietgirldownthehall” came from, and that RobotArm’s name has nothing to do with those skill crane things you see at arcades. Although I was tempted to join RobotArm and andygirl for the second movie, I realized that I had a paper to work on and that my roommate would probably be worried, since I hadn’t told her where I was going or when I would be home. Plus, the line at the ticket booth was pretty long, so… I took the T back to school. I think the intensity of andy’s addiction rubbed off on me, though, because I went through half a box of Altoids on the ride home and ended up stopping at the convenience store to pick up a mini-tin.

All in all, I had a wonderful time… Those of you said you were going to be there and weren’t – what’s the deal? You should feel downright awful, especially since you didn’t get to see the picture of Susan Bananahead (she’s quite the looker).
