Box set lost disc

I have a DVD box set, which, sadly, is missing a disc. Is there any recourse for me besides (read cheaper than) replacing the entire set? What about if one disc is damaged rather than missing? Help me Teaming Masses, you’re my only hope!

No, it’s not Star Wars. I just thought that sounded good.

Did you buy it new?

Yes, but quite awhile ago. I didn’t keep the receipt.

My only thought is that you could get the individual disc from Netflix and then “lose” it and pay for it.

Does that sound shady? I’m not sure. Maybe some Dopers can clear up the ethics of doing it that way.

( Insert illegal suggestion, invalving software-that-shall-not-be-named, here.)

Look on message boards for someone who lost one of the other DVD’s from the set and offer to buy the DVD they have so they get money towards replacing their set

Not sure of the ethics of it, but from a practical standpoint it probably won’t work. Most stores won’t accept returns on opened audio/video merchandise. They’ll exchange it for another of the same item but not return for cash. Which IMHO makes perfect sense in a case like this. I can certainly envision someone buying and returning the same box set once for each disc, each time claiming a different disc was “missing.”

You can sometimes find individual DVDs from box sets on Ebay. I almost bought a replacement there for a disc missing from one of my sets. Thankfully I was outbid right after I found my missing disc inside a book. Weird coincidence because it had been missing almost a year when I finally decided to try to replace it.

Auntie Pam, your suggestion is what is technically known as theft. You’re suggesting that he steal from the store, however cleverly he’s done it. Suggestions of how to break the law are NOT permitted in this forum, and so I have deleted your post.

GregCharles, if you take the set back to the store and explain that it was missing a disk, they might exchange for you. They can probably return the defective set to the manufacturer, so they won’t be out cash.

It’s unclear as to whether you’re talking about a disc that has been missing from when the set was new, or if it has been lost/damaged since that time; if the latter, the store probably isn’t going to be all that sympathetic.

How about this: Buy another box set, keep the disk you need, and then re-sell the other disks, individually, to recoup some of the cost.

Check the “used” racks at your local video store. For certain boxed sets, some renters (here I’m looking at Hollywood Video) sell the used discs as singles rather than as a full boxed set.
