Boyo Jim, a moment of your time please.

I’m not usually one to pit other users, except on a couple of rare occasions, but **Boyo Jim’s **comment this morning in this thread was just so beyond the pale that I can’t even fathom what would go through his head to make him think it was appropriate in any way.

Long story short, poster is nervous about a weirdo on his block that has been making inappropriate comments towards his young daughter. Discussion settles down and the thread dies, until this morning when Boyo Jim thought he should go ahead and bumpit with this classy gem:

(spelling error left intact)

What the fuck, Jim?

I don’t have the energy to go on a big rant with lots of swears and creative name calling here, so I just have to ask Jim what the fuck was going through his head when he typed that out and clicked on the little Submit button. Seriously.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty inappropriate too. I’m all for making jokes about everything, I think humor is a great healer, but there is a time and a place for it.

Drunk posting? He is BOYO Jim, after all.

You’re certain it was a joke, then?

A valid question, in the pit.

The problem was that Jim’s post contained no actual humor. Saying essentially “hey maybe your seven year old wanted some old creep to try to fuck her, ever think of that? :haw:” isn’t injecting humor into a tense situation, it’s injecting grossness into an already gross situation and making light of the most serious, unfunny element of the whole story.

For an example of how to deftly use humor in a non-inappropriate way, see kayaker’s post in the same thread:

Both touch on the same uncomfortable topic, but the difference in the two posts is night and day. What’s being made light of here is the neighbor’s grossness, in an obviously absurd way. While the OP may not be in a place to appreciate any humor at all, it’s clear the intent was to put down the neighbor, not to to be disgusting.

I think he thought it was a joke, not necessarily that it contained any humor. And you are right: kayaker’s post was exponentially more funny.

If I were to post, “Maybe Boyo Jim is looking for a girlfriend,” would that be inappropriate or appropriate? Funny or unfunny?

This is obviously a very touchy subject, so I’d like to make sure it’s a) appropriate and b) funny before I post it here.

Boyo Jim is a grown-assed person and not 7-years old, I imagine, so your question is dumb and you should feel dumb. Also though, it would be pretty funny.

Check out Jim’s lame attempt at humor in this thread. Go to post #3

Jim needs a tutorial or how to really be funny, and not a jerk in a brand new thread.

He certainly has an eeeerrrr… interesting sense of humor. <COUGH>

Yeah, you should find such a tutorial and (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showpost.php?p=16092570&postcount=65) it to him. Be sure to peruse his “user data” while you’re typing his email address.

Granting that last post was bad (I can’t see how from the link,) it still feels weird that Boyo is being pitted. I’m far more racist, misogynist, and an ass-hat than he.

Yeah, i’ve always liked Jim, but if it were me, I’d want people pointing out if i crossed the line into Weird ‘n’ Creepy posting.

And then I’d come into my Pit thread and explain that I just found out about that thing with my wife and I wasn’t handling it well and I’ve been staying up way too late hitting the Nutella…

The guy’s an ass. I just reported him for a personal insult outside the pit (it wasn’t directed towards me). I don’t think I’ve ever done that before.

I don’t think the guy has a filter. “Maybe I shouldn’t say that” is a thought he doesn’t seem to have.

Ah, it was the Spring of 2013. Some young woman somewhere chose to go bare-butt to protest something or other and, as if one asscheek were tattooed “Gavrilo” and the other “Princip,” sparked the great Gender War.

The jokes that came rolling in carried too much baggage from the bad old days of There Are No Girls on the Internet. “Tits or Get the Fuck Out” is not a legacy we may want to continue.

I looked in the mirror and saw someone who nobody, absolutely nobody, would say to themselves “oh boy, I think I’ll log into the SDMB to see what dirty joke that middle-age creepy-looking guy has posted today!” I resolved to never make a sick joke here again. My resolve lasted less than one week. The nonnies are right: I always have been a retard, but I’ve never been a mean one.

My own workable resolution was that we try to be friends here, and not make jokes that we wouldn’t make with real-life friends, and try to look the other way at bad jokes that real-life friends would make.

I saw that. I don’t disagree with the report but IMHO there’s no need to announce it publically (especially twice).

I thought the “rape month” joke was just the repetition of an overtrodden board meme rather than a particularly offensive comment, but the joke referenced in the OP is way over the line.

You’re right. I do stand by announcing it the thread in which it occurred, because I believe that is the way it should be done, but I shouldn’t have brought it over here.

The real problem with people making these kind of “jokes” is that every single person on this God-forsaken planet thinks they have a sense of humor - I’ve heard everybody I know admit their weaknesses in some area, but it’s never been “I just don’t have a sense of humor” - despite the fact that most of them are demonstrably not funny. Which, coincidentally, explains the popularity of CBS’s entire sitcom lineup.

I don’t have a sense of humor.

So much for your theory.

Jesus Fuckin’ H. Christ, if one one-line throwaway bad joke is worth a Pitting to you, OP, you need something … An anger management course? A life?

This place has really gone down hill.
