Natalie Schaefer agreed to do the pilot because she wanted a Hawaiian vacation. She thought the premise of the show was so silly it would never sell. She was heartbroken when it did.
Because she was considerably older than the rest of the cast (including Jim Backus), Schaefer had a clause written into her contract stating she’d never be shown in a close-up.
