Brazilian Dopers: Are "Pit Boys" For Real?

A Brazilian friend told me about the latest weird phenomenon in Rio de Janeiro: the so-called “Pit Boys”. These are young men of upper-class parents, who have too much testosterone and have watched the movie “The Fight Club” once too often. They have trained in the martial arts and boxing, and go out at night to bars and nightclubs, where they pick fights with other patrons…the object is to find a victim and beat the crapout of him! Is this true? If so, I guess it is just a matter of time before one of these kids picks on the wrong victim…preferably somebody who has a gun!
I guess it wouldn’t bother me if a few of these “Pit Boys” wound up dead!

I’ve heard of this as well. I’ve also heard that a certain famous Brazillian Jiujitsu family has quite a few members who act like nothing more than thugs outside the ring. I don’t know have any evidence for this (never been to Brazil) but the person I heard it from, heard it from a woman from Brazil who knew nothing about MMA martial arts or this family’s international reputation.

Vanderlei Silva and Nogeira recently took part in a peace rally to show that they look down on martial artist “pit boys”.

Third hand evidence tends to be unreliable.

People do that around here. We just call them rednecks.
