I think he gets to announce it within the day or the next day.
I don’t believe that it’s been publicly announced yet what name he will use as king; BBC Radio is currently only referring to him as “the king.”
They have also said that “the king and the queen consort” will be remaining at Balmoral overnight, and then returning to London tomorrow. It may be that his royal name will be announced then.
Yet to be determined, it seems. CNN’s correspondent is just referring to “the King,” while avoiding any name.
I think he’ll go the George route myself, although I’m less sure now there is a Prince George
He hasn’t stated his regnal name yet. I’m sure there will be an official announcement at some point. Meanwhile, he may be preoccupied by his mother’s death.
We all knew this day was coming. Hers was a one-of-a kind reign. There’ll never be anybody like her ever again. Effectively the last of the monarchs.
It isn’t that I care about her personally; it’s the awareness of entering a new phase of history departing from the familiar one I’ve always known, which feels scary.
Terry Pratchett:
The only thing known to go faster than ordinary light is monarchy, according to the philosopher Ly Tin Wheedle. He reasoned like this: you can’t have more than one king, and tradition demands that there is no gap between kings, so when a king dies the succession must therefore pass to the heir instantaneously. Presumably, he said, there must be some elementary particles – kingons, or possibly queons – that do this job, but of course succession sometimes fails if, in mid-flight, they strike an anti-particle, or republicon. His ambitious plans to use his discovery to send messages, involving the careful torturing of a small king in order to modulate the signal, were never fully expanded because, at that point, the bar closed.
Youtube has a live feed from Sky News if the other sites are still not working.
I think this is right, it’s easy to see the UK monarchy going forward fading out of the limelight like the European royals.
Surely interesting times for Britain…
Whatever you may think about the value or absurdity of her position, the Queen fulfilled her duty with grace, dignity, and strength. I’m sorry for her family, and extend my condolences to the, our British Dopers, and the entire United Kingdom.
When you’re 96, I imagine it can happen suddenly.
Brits are probably going to have to adjust to the new national anthem. There’s very few people alive who can remember a time when it had male pronouns.
She was crowned in 1953, but was Queen in Feb 1952, in the same way Charles is King now but is unlikely to be crowned soon.
The end of an era. Britain’s longest-reigning monarch is dead.
RIP Elizabeth. You were an inspiration to millions.
Maybe, maybe not. Charles is a bit of a joke, but William and Catherine are well-liked. Or so it seems from this side of the lake.
How long until his mug is on their money?
Her face isn’t just on the UK money and postage stamps, but all over the world!
Speaking of names; doesn’t this mean a new dynasty? Charles is an agnate of the House of Mountbatten. Just like Victoria was the last Hanoverian Elizabeth II was the last Windsor.
