Breaking - The Queen is unwell (has died): 8 Sep 2022

I can wholeheartedly concur. I’m a staunch small ‘r’ republican and I detest nobility, but she has gained all my respect with the way she incorporated her position.

I wonder how long before Canada starts issuing coins with Charles’ likeness?

Prior to being Edward Wessex, her youngest son was credited on TV as Edward Windsor. So not the last Windsor per se.

And I suppose that whoever starts issuing official likenesses like coins and stamps may have to wait until an official likeness has been approved by the Crown.

Was wondering the same. Quick Googling suggests the QEII bills and coins will remain in regular circulation and gradually replaced as they become worn out.

This is the break the Cromwell campaign has waited for!

Maybe they’ll break with that tradition and feature a Canadian hero.

I’d wager a hundred Gretzkies that doesn’t happen.

Geez that escalated quickly. Hope there was time for the family to say goodbye.

RIP Queen Elizabeth

I’m a British national (not subject, since I now have different citizenship) who never had much use for the monarchy, though I never thought it should be abolished. I mourn her passing. I think Charles will do a bit better as King than he did as heir.

IIRC the British media have long had plans in place for the queen’s death. All sorts of pre-prepared content and a plan to roll it out.

It may well be they delayed the news to be ready but in the end I doubt and hour or two matters.

I read someplace that upon being hired as a newsreader, people are expected to get a black suit tailored and kept at the office, just in case this sort of thing happens.

The PM just referred to the King as Charles III

oh! the prime minister just announced charles the third!

QE2’s last prime minister was born more than a 100 years after her first one (Churchill) which is rather astonishing.

It’s quite likely that she met more important people than anyone in world history. I suspect that she was a fairly shrewd judge of character so it’s a pity that we will never know her candid opinion about them.

They’ll have to fight it out with the Jacobites.

AIUI Charles became king the instant his mother died.

The coronation is a formality that will happen later.

I’m not sure whether he picks his name (Charles III) or if it is foisted on him.

Actually, many (not all) denominations of Canadian paper currency have featured Canadian prime ministers for many years. Looking through my wallet just now, the Queen’s image is only on the $20. The $10 and $5 have Canadian prime ministers.

P.S.- listening to the CNN stream in the background just now, it appears that Charles will be styled King Charles III.

What I learned when my husband died after years of illness and 10 days in ICU was that even when it is expected, it’s still a shock to the system when a loved one dies. And I believe Queen Elizabeth was loved. Maybe your experience has been different and an “expected” death did not cause you to blink a tear from your eye? <shrug>

I watched this (5 minute) video on “Operation London Bridge” a few years ago. It quickly covers what all happens when she dies. I believe it mentions that.

No, I think it was Natural Causes.
