Favre did look encouraging last night. I think he took a couple of coverage sacks, and that might have to do with the fact that Bernard Berrian was on the sideline with a hammy, so the Vikings didn’t have their primary deep threat on the field.
I think Favre’s going to be using Schiancoe a lot as a security blanket, and Harvin is showing a lot of potential too. I don’t know about that wildcat formation, though, especially with Favre throwing designed blocks.
The Vikings also had a lot of procedure penalties, which is a sign that Favre is still learning to run that offense, but he’s Bret Favre. he’ll get it under control.
I have to question the sanity of any offensive coordinator who has a 40-year-old quarterback with a rotator cuff tear and broken rib try to block someone- and the head coach who lets him. In an exhibition game.
Where there is coverage, Favre will find a way to throw into it.
When the SportsCenter recap this morning said that Favre went 13-for-18, my husband and I both shook our heads as if to knock out the cobwebs. Watching that game, it seemed like he did much worse than that. I recall a couple of good grabs by Shiancoe, and some screen passes, but it really seemed like he had more than five incompletions.
It’s strange. This is the only time I’ve rooted for a guy to fail for failure’s own sake (rather than, say, so he can be benched and somebody I like better can get a shot).
That said, I will stop rooting against the Vikings if Favre does get benched. Got nothing against Jackson or Rosenfels.
I watched the game until the end of the 3rd quarter. Overall I thought Favre did really well. He played rather conservative and took what the defense gave him. The Vikings’ offense as a whole looked a bit rusty. The pass protection wasn’t very good, but we’re breaking in a rookie tackle and a new center. This, and the penalties, need to improve before the season begins.
Peterson and Shiancoe looked ready for the season to begin. I like the different looks they’ve added to the offense with Harvin, although Jackson or Rosenfels should be allowed to run any wildcat formation plays.
The defense looked great against an above-average offense. They look ready to go as well.
Was the 70-something yard run by Peterson “legitimate”, or was it Houston’s defense playing like Houston’s defense?
I was listening on the radio but the AM reception is pretty bad around here, so I couldn’t hear if he broke some tackles or if he just got really good blocking.
Peterson was barely touched through the line. He cut it to the outside to avoid some defenders and hit the afterburners to turn the corner down the sideline. He then outran 3 defenders (IIRC) for the next 40 yards or so.
There was a big hole up the middle and then he bounced to the outside and out ran everyone, including a couple of guys that looked like they had an angle on him.
Wake me when Favre completes a pass over 15 yards long in the air. The verbal tongue bath he got from Jaworski and Gruden last night was extremely annoying.
I’ll side with the announcers on that one – Harvin slowed up, or else he would have had the catch.
But I’ll definitely agree with fiddlesitcks: did Favre ever complete a pass where the ball went 15 yards past the line of scrimmage in the air (so the screen pass TD at the end of the first half is disqualified)? I think not.
He played fine, but not inspiring in the least, especially given the (seemingly mandatory) fellating he received from the announcers.
