Bricker Challenge 2003 #5

Aw, damnit, Bricker - you caught me at the start of the massive move from apartment to townhouse, with a job interview thrown into the mix for good measure. I’m too exhausted to even look at the questions.

On the upside, I’ve picked out a nice Weber charcoal grill for the new place with the winnings so far.

Lemur866: 43

D’oh!

Hmmm…which ones did I get wrong?..grumble…

Well, I don’t rightly know; however, since there were four that you answered with ‘?’ (indicating lack of an answer), that means that three of your given answers were wrong. And I believe I may know which three.

Unfortunately, I am leaving now to go to work. I shall work on this (if it’s still viable) this evening.

Yeah, missed four. The monopoly one I’ll have to dig out my Monopoly game at home, not too hard. The others…“Cell thirteen” brings up a lot of fan fiction and SM slash from google. No luck there. Resistance…I don’t know how to calculate that. The integral I might be able to do if I pull out an old Calculus textbook for an hour or so.

But I’m not sure what is counted as wrong, except I don’t think Bricker is counting my Qui Tam answer as correct. I googled my heart out, but couldn’t find a reference. There WAS this one guy whose personal web page said he was a Qui Tam lawyer, and also a Gilbert and Sullivan fan. Maybe Bricker knows the guy.

“What have I got in my pockets? Hah! Gollum will never google that!”

Maybe on some I put too MUCH information, in classic Jeopardy blunder fashion. “No, I’m sorry that’s RUDYARD Kipling, not RUPERT Kipling. Remember, you only have to give the LAST name.”

That’s almost impossible to do here. I grant it might happen some time – but that’s not where any of your errors lie.

You mean I might actually get through this being the ONLY ONE who knew this answer off the top of my head? Kewl! I knew that particular interest would serve me well someday, even if it was only in a minor capacity.

As for the wrong answers, let me give you a hint on one, because it’s the same reason I got the same question wrong, and I’m feeling generous because I don’t want the beer: you got one wrong because YOU DIDN’T READ THE QUESTION.

OK, I’ve got one fix.

  1. What honorable Bond actress’ character name might suggest she owned many cats?

The question seems to ask for the character name, but actually asks for the actress’s name. Since Maud Adams’ name doesn’t have the “honor” angle, Octopussy is out. The actress credited with playing Pussy Galore was Honor Blackman.

It got really weird after I came back into their lives years later and their teenage daughter Jenny - my cousin - got a pretty serious crush on me.

Shakespeare Sonnet 73
That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruined choirs where late the sweet birds sang.
In me thou see’st the twilight of such day
As after sunset fadeth in the west,
Which by and by black night doth take away,
Death’s second self, that seals up all the rest.
In me thou see’st the glowing of such fire,
That on the ashes of his youth doth lie
As the deathbed whereon it must expire,
Consumed with that which it was nourished by.
This thou perceivest, which makes thy love more strong,
To love that well which thou must leave ere long.

Apologies for stealing your answers lemur, but, its part of the game.

Right back at ya! Of course, this would make us tied, and we’ve posted the exact same answers only you’ve posted them first. So it seems that the first person to get the Qui Tam/Mikado reference and figures out the one error (assuming the answers below are correct), wins the game.

1-omh

Lsura: 9
Ryle Dup: 46
Lemur866: +2 (46 total)

You lied to me, Ryle! You Bastard!

I’ve no dog in this fight so can I suggest that the answer to question number 45 is seven because the last two shapes indicated in Lemur’s reply are essentially the same shape.

Also, a internet calculus gizmo gave me 125 for the integration question but it could have been rounding up.

I know nothing about circuits but plugging the resistances into the Ohm’s Law formula gives me 1.2.

I don’t think the two shapes are the same…they are mirror images of each other. If you make the shapes out of blocks, they are not exactly substitutable…they are optical isomers.

Resistance…the references I found state:

1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3…

So 1/R = 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/6

1/R = 1

R = 1

So the answer seems to be 1 ohm.

But you seem to be right about the integral. Therefore:

  1. What is the area bounded by y = 3x^2, x=5, and y=0 ?

125

Lemur866: +1 (47 total)

Yeah, once I found an online integral site, and plugged it in, I realized I could have done it in my head if only I remembered freshman calculus from 15 years ago.

The integral of 3x^2 is x^3, obviously. x=5, so the area = 125.

Hmmm.

On reflection - no pun intended - I think I am wrong and Lemur is right about the number of shapes in question 45. I was assuming 7 was the right answer, but I am beginning to think I was wrong.

So it’s possible that Lemur is at 48, and anyone else that answered ‘8’ is +1 from the score I provided earlier.

Apologies for the bum steer on the resistance thing - somehow I managed to come up with 1/2+1/3+1/6=5/6, giving me 6/5 for the inverse, hence 1.2. Sorry again.

On the blocks question, after a bit of fiddling with balls of paper (as close to a cube as I can manage in my office), I’m coming around to Lemur’s point of view. At least I managed to hit one which was being marked incorrect.
