According to Wikipedia, a troll is “someone who intentionally posts derogatory or otherwise inflammatory messages about sensitive topics in an established online community such as an online discussion forum to bait users into responding.”

It was the polite thing to do at the time.

Because it was the socially acceptable thing to do.

Come on, everything’s “endangered” these days.

If you are not a troll, you might want to modify your behavior, because this certainly looks trollish by the definition you provided.

Actually that last comment was a bit “trollish” by that definition (although it contained more than a grain of truth). I was just getting rather irritated by holier-than-thou-chowder, and I apoligise for the way I put it.

The other two comments were not “trollish” though - in the situation that I was in it really was the right thing to be doing. Just like I’d never give a Chinese person white flowers, or shake with my left hand in Saudi Arabia, I do try to be culturally sensitive whereever I go.

Well try to be culturally sensitive while on this board.

Holier than thou…moi?

I just cannot stand jerks like you
I fucking genuinely didn’t fucking realise this, fucking thanks for the fucking heads up, you wanker.

(To readers apart from stretch: The above may not seem like conventional English, but I have had to insert profanity so he understands it. I will put a bit more effort into monitoring my posts now, but there is a reasonable limit).
Yes, there is a reasonable limit. The reasonable limit is to not post more than you can keep up with. Apparenty you are having difficulty with that–please post less or, as previously requested, fuck off.

Thanks!

That wouldn’t work. No one would be able to post in more than fifty threads, ever, as they would be spending their entire time religiously checking those threads.

But hunting is just a pastime. And those are points of etiquette. Things that you do not to offend people–oh, never mind.

Once you had provided context, the trollishness was definitely mitigated, however; Your initial response of “It was the polite thing to do at the time” was offered without context, and therefore seemed to be merely an attempt at goading chowder. Especially considering you knew he was waiting for an answer due to your interactions in this thread.
I make no accusations, I am simply trying to illustrate to you, without vitriol, why you may be earning the label “troll” or “jerk”.

If everyone followed those rules religiously, then we would end up with precisely fifty threads on the board.

Oh fuck off, you’re getting on my tit now.

Go play with the bacon slicer

I have no dog in this fight, but I don’t even get this comment. It’s pretty simple, you post in threads of interest, check back later to see if you’ve a reply or there is more discussion of interest. Other threads get read without posting to them.

Everyone gets to choose what threads they post to, so there might be hundreds of threads going of which each person only posts to a few.

I know it drives me insane when someone starts an OP or a discussion that I post to then never shows up again. It’s just bad form.

Which is something that SBSO can’t seem to fathom out
That’s what the User CP is for- set your profile to automatically subscribe to threads you post in and then periodically click the CP- you see what threads have action.

You don’t have go digging around for the threads! I thought the SBSO was pretty clever when he first came, but this thread… sheesh (walks away shaking head…)

Actually the assumptions behind my model were wrong, so scratch that. Other threads over the fifty will be created - but it seems impossible to reasonably monitor all of ones threads. At least without the subscription feature which you’ve now mentioned, which I wasn’t aware of.

So I was completely wrong about that… I’ll pay more attention now!

Or, you could just check your history and look back in on topics you visited and replied to. Also, you could write down the thread titles you post a reply in.

The OP helps explain why Britannia don’t rule no more.

Can someone please explain to me why the phrase “beyond the pale” would be offensive to the Irish? It isn’t to me and in all my 36 years have never heard anyone take offense because of it. It’s used over here as well.

We can be a very grumpy group of feckers and are quick to take offense sometimes but that phrase doesn’t do it.

As to the rest of this bollocks? Well, IMO the OP is a very obvious troll.

How do I do that?

How do I do that?
Scroll down on this page for a how-to. Perhaps you should reconsider the idea of sneering at anyone here next time, since you aren’t showing yourself to be more knowledgeable than “us”?
That idea is utterly ridiculous. If we say five minutes to write a post, that’s almost four entire days of non-stop posting, no stopping for food, drinks, having a life, letting real people “get to know me”, etc. Nuts.

I am presenting a real side of me. It would be a waste of everyone’s time and it would clog up the boards if I were to present every other side of me on these boards in a proportionally balanced manner. I’m not even sure that it would be possible.
Or you could. . . you know. . . spread the posts over a few weeks or even gasp a few months’ time. At your current rate of inanity that you’re spewing out, which is 250 posts in 2 weeks’ time, you’d get that done in 14 more weeks.

So what’s the rush? Do you think that your topic would change in 14 weeks? Do you think that someone else is crazy enough to steal your topic in the next 14 weeks? Or do you just want to post it before your guest membership expires since you figure that if they ban you, you want them to do it before you give up your $14.95. If that’s the case, don’t expect anyone to take you very seriously. . . not that they do now anyway.
