I went to Uni in Birmingham two decades ago and there became addicted to the traditional salt and vinegar chips everyone ate after a night out. Turns out, that is not vinegar.
I want to try this, but there are a fair number of Chip Shop Curry Sauces available on Amazon.
What is closest so I can taste what you guys like only here in the US?
There are quite a number of sauces for fish-&-chip chips here in the UK.
Vinegar is the most common (OK, it’s often a ‘non brewed condiment’ but essentially acetic acid).
In eastern Scotland, a brown sauce is common. A typical one seems to be HP sauce, or similar.
Then for many years UK chip shops have offered ‘curry sauce’… it’s not a new thing at all.
It’s more what you would call a chinese curry, not so much like an indian one.
Tends to taste like an old-fashioned ‘curry powder’ that was sold before people started to investigate authentic indian cuisine. Probably contains a lot of 5-spice and star anise?
Usually I’m not a big fan, but there was sometimes a perverse attraction late in the evening after playing a gig (and drinking too many pints)…
I’d think that anything calling itself a chinese style curry might be close.
Haven’t tried any of the Amazon offerings…
I have never heard of this, but I am greatly intrigued. I see a bunch of people online comparing chip shop curry sauce to Japanese katsu curry sauce, if that helps.
Unless you live in some area where there are few people who want to buy any vaguely foreign foods, you will find aisles with a selection of foreign foods in some supermarkets. The supermarket half a mile from me has such an aisle. Why not order a selection of such sauces from an online website offering such sauces? I think you can get a better idea what you’d like by tasting them yourself rather than relying on someone else’s taste.
