There was a bit of an unholy triumvirate involving Aeschines, mswas, and drmark2000. Of the three, two were suspended (mswas’ suspension is over, but he does not seem to have returned), and I fear Aeschines is cracking under the strain of bearing the entire load on his own.

Agree with the first part, disagree with the second. Drive-bys are not, in and of themselves, a negative or a positive. Content and context matter, as always. A drive-by in a political thread that says nothing more than “Bush sucks!” is not useful, and indicative of tooldom on the part of the poster. However, drive-bys can also be witty, or to the point. A good argument is not judged merely on length. And most often, drive-bys are not intended to be serious arguments at all, but merely jokes for the amusement of anyone in the thread. Most of the quotes you’ve pulled from Bryan seem to be in the latter category.

I don’t agree with you on this. I’m not a fan of drive-bys (whether toolsih or on-target) or jokes just tossed into a thread. So I doubt that any further examples with convince you.

And for the record, yes, I think Bryan is a clever, witty poster, and a solid asset to the boards in general.

Yes. Wilson can be wrong but to dismiss his comments as ignorant or worse is foolish. I start with the assumption that anything a rigorous thinker with a reputation, like Wilson, says in public usually has been thought about beforehand and isn’t just a case of winging it.

That’s why, in the thread involved here, I suggested that Wilson himself be contacted at Harvard and told about his many failings in the Salon interview. That way, if he chooses to do so, Wilson can defend himself. Personally, I would feel a little (OK a lot) ill-equipped to defend E.O. Wilson.
