I like Bryan Ekers. He’s smart and funny. If he was a chick I could dig him.
I, for one, would rather see you gone than Ekers. No question.
Well, we’re mising Diogenes. Let’s call him in here to get all medieval on his ass!
Of course he’d have to be, you know, hot.
Ooh, missed this one. As far as I can tell, you are damn near totally gone right now. Why don’t you just take that last *teeny *little step.
Hi there, Aeschines. You don’t know me, I’m sure, and we probably have never interacted on the boards. In fact, I don’t post much, and when I do it’s usually in very bland threads. However, I am an avid reader of these fora. Now, I understand my low post count probably dismisses my opinion in your eyes, but I thought I’d throw my two cents in as a lurker you don’t even know.
I think you’re a tool. And you come across as damned pathetic. Bryan Ekers is pretty funny. And it’d be nice if you shut the hell up.
But this thread is hilarious, so you’ve got that going for you.
Oh yeah? Then fuck you and the horse you rode in on!
You’re going to have to pick one or the other.
Ah, but many of them are skeptics.
Since right-wingers and skeptics tend not to overlap, there’s no question that as a lefty New Ager on the board I tend not to make allies here easily. And many of them have been either banned or suspended.
But I shall NOT bow down to the forces of Tooldom! I SHALL boldly proceed, even if I am the LAST person on the board fighting ignorance even as Cecil commands us to DO!
Let any bona fide New Ager come forth and pit me here. There are none who will do so.
Would you care to back that up with any evidence whatsoever? I don’t think I’ve ever had any interaction with you before, so I’d like to know how you came to “truly believe” that I’m mentally handicapped. It seems as accurate as thinking that I’m part of any “Right Wing Blowhard Brigade”. Or are you simply incapable of believing that anyone could disagree with you without being mentally inferior?
But then he wouldn’t want you.
I may be one hunter against many fish, but you fish are in a barrel, hon. I ain’t goin’ noplace.
Did you vote for Bush? If so, your IQ is 70 max.
Again, did you vote for Bush?
If you did not vote for Bush, then I think it’s very likely your IQ is 85+ and you are not a member of the Brigade.
Aeschines must have a toolbox the size of a Volkswagen.
And, let me guess, anyone who does isn’t a [del]true Scotsman[/del] bona fide New Ager.
Okay, then. Before I begin, please let me sincerely thank everyone who’s jumped to my defense in this thread (which seems to be just about everybody except the OP) and explain that my apparent avoiding of this thread is for a perfectly banal and normal reason - I was out for a few hours while canceling the registration on my 1990 Camry (mentioned in this thread) and picking up the registration of my new-to-me 2002 Toyota Echo (I asked for purchasing advice in this thread). I also did some shopping. Despite the activity in this thread, it really is only (as of this writing) a few hours old. I could easily have been taking a nap or something.
I haven’t started many threads, it’s true. For some reason, the subjects I start threads about aren’t popular and the threads rapidly sink into obscurity. Also, in one or two of my early threads, I acted like a jerk when the discussion didn’t go in the direction I’d expected. I rather regret this behaviour, and it discourages me from starting controversial threads, as in GD.
As for quips and puns, I freely admit that my primary goal in being a member of this board is (by far) my own amusement, and I happen to like witty one-liners and sarcastic jabs. I have made an effort to hold myself in check after one or two unpleasant incidents in GQ, where someone’s honest request for information really didn’t deserve me being an instant smartass. In more recent months, I’ve tried to hold back until other posters have made a serious effort to answer the question, then jump in with my zinger, as was the case in the Hoodia thread (though it was actually in GD, I applied the same principal).
As with all humour, sometimes it bombs. Lately, I’ve been routinely adding smileys (something I deliberately avoided as too cutesy in my early years on the SDMB) when I think I might be misunderstood. I occasionally threw in a “bDOOM kssh” after a joke, though.
My personal favourite zingers (or at least the ones I can remember off the top of my head) include this, this, this, this and (one I’m especially proud of) this. Naturally, not everyone is going to find these amusing, and I’d be amazed if anyone found all of them amusing as I did, but no matter.
But enough about comedy. As for the specific complaints in this thread:
[ul][li]I genuinely dislike pseudoscience and the frequently attendant attitude of proponents that my dislike is motivated by a closed mind, fear, hatred or anything other than straightforward skepticism. I have no particular “hard-on” for any one proponent, though I’ve come to recognize Aeschines, lekatt, Liberal (to a degree), and Peter Morris (though far less frequently in recent months), among others, as the ones I’m most likely to find myself arguing with not because I’m chasing them, but they’re among the most likely people to start or significantly contribute to a thread about some pseudoscientific idea. This is the source of the “bias” I mentioned in the other thread which Aeschines quoted in the OP.[/li][li]Aeschines’ claim that I’m somehow cowering behind something would be a little stronger if he was posting under his real name and I was not, but that’s a minor point.[/li][li]The question I asked in the abortion thread was, I thought, a pretty straightforward one. The response, though, was that once abortion-convicted women were ordered by law to care for terminally ill children in a community-service kind of deal, their attitudes would naturally change and their pro-choice stance would weaken. I don’t really buy this, but it’s too soft and vague a position to challenge. Besides, the thread was getting increasingly acrimonious (not good for GD and I thought the mods would eventually shut it down, issue mass warnings and/or move it to the Pit) and other pro-choice posters were arguing the position more passionately and effectively than I could, so I didn’t feel my further contribution was needed.[/li][li]I’m not sure how Bush got involved in this. Were I American, I would not have voted for him either time (though my vote for Kerry would have been less-than-enthusiastic).[/ul][/li]
There, I think I’ve explained myself adequately. The SnakeSpirit “lynching” described by Aeschines came after Snake pitted me (for pretty much the same reason Aeschines is now using) and it turned into a big dogpile. I eagerly heaped oodles of scorn on Snake, but I can’t seem to summon the energy to do the same to Aeschines. It’s entirely pointless.
Besides, this thread gave me an opportunity to talk about myself, which is my favourite subject of all.
She. She wouldn’t want me. Try to keep up.
Well, you asked. Don’t toy with us like that.
[Channeling Ramtha] Aeschines is a boob. [/Channeling Ramtha]
Add me to the list. I can’t say that I have found any of Bryan Ekers’s posts to be objectionable.
Although I can’t recall ever interacting with him, Aeschines, on the other hand, has made a rather strong impression on me in the category of “foolish git whose posts are most likely to make me go ,” based on what I have seen of him in GD and the Pit (and I’m certainly not right-wing.)
And the idea of the likes of Aeschines criticizing E. O. Wilson is rather like having Homer Simpson critiquing Albert Einstein.
Wilson was here in Panama last year to give a lecture, and I was fortunate enough to be able to have dinner with him afterwards. He was very skillful in answering sometimes difficult questions from the audience after his lecture.
Good post, Bryan Ekers. Reasonable, eloquent, and well-written. I officially take back my “fuck you.” In fact, you’re an alright guy.
I agree with you about both Bush and Kerry, btw.
Hugs all 'round, everybody?
Wow, that didn’t take long. Now tell us how you really feel about him.
I did. Bryan is a cool guy. So are you.
{{{{duffer}}}}
Feels good, don’t it?
Does that not tell you something?
Paranoia much?
Too embarrassed to admit they know you.
