Buffy FX Marathon (new thread by popular demand)

Because you demanded it (well, at least one of you demanded it), a brand-new thread devoted to the Buffy FX Thanksgiving Day marathon. General topics of discussion being what episodes you would have chosen in place of the ones shown, or defending the choices, and someone said they were desperate to talk about “Graduation Day.” Picks are limited to the first five seasons as those are what FX has in syndication (so no “Buffy the Musical” votes!). Spoilers will undoubtedly abound.

As I noted in one of the infinite number of Buffy threads, I would not have picked either “Graduation Day” episodes, for the simple reason that they had been on earlier that week. Same for “Prom” which had also just been on. In their place I would have picked “Hush” and “The Body” and either Willow’s battle with Glory or the Final Battle with Glory.

Which is not to say I don’t like G-Day and Prom, in fact the scene where Buffy is named “Class Protector” is perhaps the best moment of the show and definitely in the top three. It’s just that we’d just seen them… (whine whine whine)

Your picks? General discussion? There are fourteen slots available (the marathon was 14 hours).

Well, seeing my VCR decided that it didn’t feel like working the day they showed the Prom & Graduation Day (Part I) I was quite glad they showed them. (I loved the “lowest death rate of any class” line.)

I agree. And did you notice who presented the award?

I also agree about “Hush”.

I was, for the most part, happy with the selection of episodes. Although I wish they had shown the episode where Jenny Calendar is killed off, as it’s one I have never seen. And not that there are not many other eps I would like to have seen.

I, too, love the scene where Buffy is presented with the Class Protector award. And, yes, I noticed that the presenter was one of the Geek Trio.

I noticed the short Geek Trio guy several times during the marathon. There’s a scene where Cordelia’s former friends are giving her a hard time for having dated Zander, a certifed looser. One of the friends pretends to want to set her up with someone: it’s the short guy, sitting on a stairway, sucking on a milkshake or something. The short guy is also among the students fighting the vampires on graduation day.

In episodes that were not part of the marathon, I believe Buffy once stopped this same guy when he was about to go on a shooting spree. And I think he’s the guy who worked a spell that made everyone in Sunnydale think he was a sort of James Bond.

And one of the Geeks built the Buffy Bot.

On Prom night, the guy who sicced the hairy creatures on the Prom goers – was he one of the Geeks?

Have all three of the Geeks been glimpsed or featured repeatedly over the years? What early sightings have I missed? And what are these guys’ names?

I think that we’ve had the most Jonathan sightings out of all the geeks. He was the one with the shooting and the good-at-everything spell. I noticed him in the one where Cordy and Buffy compete for homecoming queen too. They both try bribe him for a vote.

The Body was not eligible for voting… dunno why, but it was in really big letters on the FX voting site.

I was also disappointed in the choice of episodes. I would loved to have seen Hush, which was one of the best Buffy episodes ever, or even Primeval or Restless. Oooh… or Where the Wild Things Are. Mmmmmm… Giles singing… The only one I wound up watching was Something Blue, 'cause it cracks me up.

Hazel… the prom hellhound guy is the brother of the third Geek. Jonathan is the one who presented the award, Warren is the builder of the BuffyBot… and for some reason I can’t remember the other guy’s name. I DO know they made a huge deal out of him NOT being the one who trained the hellhounds.

I can’t believe that Hush didn’t make the cut. It seems like it would have been a given. There isn’t a single Buffy fan that I know who doesn’t put it in the top 3 episodes.

Perhaps The Body wasnn’t eligiable because they didn’t want to give away that Joyce dies to people who haven’t seen them. Just a guess.

Okay Graduation Day.
From my very limited Buffy viewing, Principal Snider was a great adversary for the Scoobies. I understand that once the kids were out of High School his power would be nonexistant but his death was rather…well, lame.
Was there any any outside reason Quark, I mean Snider, was killed so anti-climaticly?

So in the final battle, the group that was with Angel when the Vamps started to retreat- Who the hell were they? Parents? Underclassmen not graduating? Who the Hell?

What did the Mayor say as he was about to blow up?

Oooooo! More Giles singing? I keep watching The Musical repeatedly just for the little zing! that runs through me whenever Giles sings, especially when he sings “tell me!” in the finale…

I have a crush on ASH like I haven’t had a crush on a celebrity since I was a teenybopper. I was hot for him before, but “The Musical” and “Band Candy” shoved me right over the edge into madness.

I’m certain that the reason “The Body” and “Hush” were not included was because the majority of voters are FX watchers like me, and almost every episode they did was from the episodes FX has already shown. Had I bothered to vote, I would have chosen from that group because it’s the only group I know about.

We lost Buffy access at my house (Damn WGN) and I’m a couple of seasons behind. I think the last thing I saw was Graduation, so the later episodes of the marathon were confusing, but great. When is Hush likely to show up on FX? I’ll need to set my VCR.

Pshaw. Tell me about it. I got roped into making him a QUILT for his birthday. Do you have ANY idea how long that takes???

And yes… Giles sings in WTWTA and, IIRC, The Yoko factor, though the scene in WTWTA is longer and much hotter, IMO. He’s singing ‘Behind Blue Eyes.’ Mmmmmmmm. I have it as an MP3 on both office 'puters.

Let’s see… I’m pretty sure that ‘Freshmen’ was the last episode FX showed. Going by that, and assuming my brain is working correctly and I have the order right, the upcoming week will be ‘Living Conditions’ through ‘Wild at Heart’ which would put ‘Hush’ at a week from this coming Thursday. (which puts ‘Something Blue’ and ‘Pangs’ in that same week… yummy!)

The Mayor says, “Well, Gosh…”

Comic relief of course. That was his function in that episode. Remember the little speech he gave at the ceremony? Plus they didn’t need him anymore.

Excellent question. Hadn’t thought about it. Some vamps from that bar he used to hang out at, that maybe owed him some favors?

Something like “Good job” I think…A classic “classy villian” exit line.

And speaking of Quark, have you seen “Angel” at all? Another DS9 refugee over there, looking a lot better IMHO.

I’ve seen Graduation Day like a billion times, and I’m sure the major says “Well, gosh!” just before the bomb goes off. I checked the transcript, and it agrees with me.

I thought the reason that Snider went the way he did was to reinforce that despite his illusions of grandeur, he really was insignifcant, and that’s what you get when you work for someone like the mayor.

In the transcript for the episode, it says that Angel is with another group of students. Make up your own backstory for that one.

And who is the DS9 refugee on Angel? It’s going to drive me nuts trying to figure it out.

Count me in for the ASH drool club. I am going to miss that man in ways you can’t even imagine…

Jonathon also appears in “The Wish.” Harmony tells Cordelia she should start dating again and she has the perfect guy, and then leads Cordy to Jonathon who is drinking a Big Gulp larger than his head.

Thanks, people. You are all way ahead of me. I guess whatever was said abou the 3rd geek being the brother of the prom night hellhound guy went right by me, as I’d pretty much forgotten the hellhould incident. Now I’m guessing that the 3rd geek would be the hellhound guy, had the actor been available. Unable to get him, they put in another actor and established him as the brother.

Now a question that will probably reveal me as being totally out of it, but how did the Scoobie Gang come to be called that?

Jeez, you’re the second person I’ve run into who didn’t get this one. I suppose I should put in

Terry Farrell, aka Jadzia Dax on DS9, now (to mix up my sci-fi/fantasy references real good ;)) turned to the Dark Side as Lilah the evil lawyer on “Angel”. I think she did it for the clothes; she looks so much better in those LA Law power lawyer outfits than in her Starfleet issue pajamas.

He’s recurred throughout the whole series. I distinctly remember him from a 1st or early 2nd season ep frantically trying to brush a scorpion thingy off his back.

That’s the scene I was attempting to describe, but I did not remember his name.

Wow, Wierd Al – I had no idea. I did not recognize her. Thanks for the info.

I beg to differ… Terry Farrell did indeed return to TV after DS9, in a few different incarnations, but doesn’t play Lilah. I double-checked with IMDb, and they agree… Lilah is played by Stephanie Romanov.

I was wondering why I couldn’t get this one…
