No, Stoid, people here aren’t upset that episodes such as “The Body” & “Hush” weren’t included in the marathon; it’s that they weren’t even eligible for voting. As most Buffy fans regard those two episodes as the best, I’m certain that they most definitely would have been include in the marathon if they were up for vote.
Oh, and one other thing for Hazel… found this in the transcript for ‘Flooded’-
ANDREW: Don’t trust him. Robo-pimp daddy’s all mouth.
WARREN: Shut up, Andrew! You’re just mad I wouldn’t build you Christina Ricci.
ANDREW: You owe me, man.
WARREN: Oh, or else what? You’ll train another pack of devil-dogs to ruin my prom? Ha! Graduated!
ANDREW: That wasn’t me! How many times do I have to say it? The prom thing was my lame-o brother, Tucker.
JONATHAN: Yeah, well tell him I was at that prom.
ANDREW: Hello! Screen-wipe, new scene. (makes screen-wipe gesture) I had nothing to do with the devil dogs. I trained flying demon monkeys to attack the school play. School play, dude!
Oh, two things, actually. I’m pretty sure the Scoobie thing came from Willow, but I can’t find the exact reference. I do know that in The Witch she refers to them as the ‘Slayerettes’.
Isn’t the reason some of them haven’t aired on FX (absent whatever actual reason for excluding some of them from marathon consideration) that they haven’t reached that point in the series yet? They just started season 4 before the marathon. “Hush” is later in season 4. “B v Drac” is season 5 as is “The Body.” Not sure which ep “The Gift” is; is that the one where it snows? I thought I just missed that one in regular rotation. I’m kind of amazed, if the above is correct, that WB is allowing any of “its” episodes to air on UPN.
Thanks, [b[bobkitty!** So he trained flying demon monkeys to attack the school play? I love it!
I think I’ve got them now. Jonathan (short), Andrew (blond), and Warren. Jonathan’s the one who’s killing spree was stopped by Buffy, and who did the spell that made him the hero of Sunnydale. Warren built the Buffy Bot. Andrew’s the brother of the Prom devil dog guy.
Jonathan’s shown up a number of times throughout the series. Was Warren ever seen before building the Bot? Was Andrew seen before the Trio was formed?
Just realized, before the building of the Buffy Bot, there was an episode where Warren built himself a girlfriend bot. I should have asked, was the girlfriend bot episode his first appearence in the series?
Yes, Jonathon appeared in fourteen episodes throughout seasons 2-4; Warren first appeared in I Was Made To Love You where he had a robot girlfriend; Tucker was only seen once, and his brother wasn’t seen at all until the Geek Trio.
Yes, FX has not reached the point in the series where these excluded episodes would be shown. However, looking at FX’s schedule, it looks like Hush, The Body, Buffy Vs Dracula, and The Gift will be skipped over. If it’s true that UPN will be showing these episodes in Buffy’s Tuesday night slot, I can see why they wouldn’t be available to FX.
And yeah–it is surprising that UPN will be showing episodes that were previously seen on the WB, but I think we should realize that the WB did not own any episodes of Buffy–20th Century Fox produces them. In the standard contract, the network only has the right to show episodes of a series twice, after that the rights revert back to the owner.
PS: The Gift is the episode in which Buffy dies. The episode where it snows is called Amends.
The latter is correct but not the former. In the ep where Buffy gets mindread-y (damn me for not knowing titles, but I can’t access the FX website; anyone care to link me an ep guide with titles that’s not at FX and preferably is utterly lacking in bells and whistles?) she picks up a thought that “tomorrow I will kill them all.” The next day she spots Jonathon in a tower with a rifle and assumes he’s going to open fire on the students, but he tells her that he’s there to kill himself. The real attempted murderer is…[Anya] I’ll never tell. [/Anya]
Two of the better Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode guides (which are actually linked to in various posts in this thread) are:
[li]The Sunnydale Slayers;[/li] and BuffyGuide.com.
Another, minor note on Snyder’s undignified demise: In the first episode he appears in, perhaps even his very first line, he says, “I know Principal Flutie would have said, ‘Kids need understanding. Kids are human beings.’ That’s the kind of wooly-headed liberal thinking that leads to being eaten.”
So clearly, he was destined to end up as something’s lunch, and being eaten by a four story tall worm is certainly a memorable way to go.
So, um, not really about the FX marathon, but it’s about an ep that was on FX tonight so rather than start a new thread I thought I’d just post it here. Just watched the ep where Kathy goes to hell. I almost didn’t watch it because I thought it was one of the worst episodes the first time I saw it. Watching it again though I thought it was really funny! Maybe, having lived alone for a couple of years now, I have regained my natural ironic detachment when it comes to matters of the rommate variety. The standard roommate squabbles with the added dimension (demon-sion? Never mind) really cracked me up. Anyone else care to share stories of eps they thought were clunkers but upon repeated viewing were upgraded in your opinion?
You’re right! I saw Jonathon and recognized him as hero spell guy. The other ep I did not remember at all well. I came up with an image of him in a tower with a rifle, but did not remember that the situation turned out Not To Be What It Seemed. (I don’t know titles, either.)
I was distressed to see so many people acuse Jonathen of being a mass murderer. He seems to be a decent guy over all, and he’s just out to conquer Sunnydale.
Because you’re all here I’m going to subject you to a theory, the geek trio can’t help but to want to take over Sunnydale. It is designed to allow for an Ascension, and without the major to shut it down it is gathering energy again to allow for another transformation. The geek trio are not very strong willed and they toy with powerful forces, on the hell mouth. As a result they are drawn to the power that they can feel is embodied in the town and aren’t really thinking about it.
Anyway as for the marathon I was disapointed that “Passion” wasn’t included. I mean seriously that is one of the best episodes of Buffy ever. Angelus being really twisted and evil. Giles comming home to the romantic music and the roses. It’s just perfect.
Other than that the episodes were choices I would have made. Though I like the episode with the little kid’s coma causing nightmares to become real, one episode I don’t know the name of. I was surprised that didn’t get on there. Vampire buffy is sexy.
Except that his big act prior to this was to cast a spell that manipulated the minds of at least everyone in Sunnydale and apparently everyone in the world. We’ve all tagged Willow as the up-and-coming Big Bad, citing as evidence that she manipulated one person’s mind. But Jonathon, who manipulated six billion minds, is “a decent guy”? Add to that the fact that he’s willing to kill (at least willing to kill Buffy and not really caring if the security guard Rusty lives or dies) to preserve his plan to take over Sunnydale and he tracks to be a completely amoral person and not the least bit decent.
Disagree, since the Ascension took place. The mayor did ascend, although why anyone would want to be a giant snake is beyond me. The Hellmouth is closed and apparently dormant. At least it hasn’t been used as the excuse for evil pretty much since the gang graduated and blew up high school. I don’t think magic or evil outside forces has to be the excuse for all bad behaviour in Sunnydale. Some people are just jerks.
Except for one very important point, I enjoyed that epidsode, called “Living Conditions” too. What I didn’t like is that FX apparently deleted the subtitles used for when the demons were speaking. In the climatic scene in Buffy’s dorm room when the demon Taparrich comes for Kathy they FX inexplicibly cut out the following subtitled gems:
“Taparrich: There you are. Do you have any idea how much trouble you’re in young lady?
Kathy: I’m not going back!
Taparrich: Don’t take that tone with me.
Kathy: I’m 3000 years old! When are you going to stop treating me like I’m 900?
Taparrich: Enough. You’re coming home.”
The very idea of evil demons having such a discussion is just hilarious.
My understanding was that the spell altered reality, much like the one that made Dawn did. Except that it wasn’t as subtle and had more consequences (which Jonathen wasn’t aware of). So people were just remembering a different world. He isn’t exactly a paragon of virtue but he wasn’t evil evil. At least not until the geek trio-ness. Even then it looks like the Buffy-bot builder is the only one with a spine and drives the group as a result.
As for the hell mouth being closed I sorta remember that, still I think that Sunnydale may have a fair deal of lingering power. I’m not saying it made the geek trio evil I’m saying that it made their evil directed. Really I can’t think of any reason why anyone would want Sunnydale other than some supernatural compulsion to want it. Maybe they just think it’s still a powerful place, I’m assuming they want it for something.
I though the mayor wanted to be a giant snake because that’s the most powerful sort of demon one could turn into. Though why he wanted to be an actual demon when he was an immortal, and invincible, magican of some sort was beyond me. I guess some people are just greedy.
That’s my big question, too. Seems like life was much more fun for him in the days leading up to his ascension. Being invincible and yet still human seems like a good gig to me.
Although, if we want to get really realistic about it all, being invincible doesn’t mean one is uncontrollable. So he couldn’t be killed…doesn’t mean he couldn’t be contained! If this were real life, they would have locked him up so the ascension could never take place.
I’ve had a theory for a little while now that the Hellmouth has some other side effects. For one thing, it seems to be a magnet for powerful magic artifacts. The sewers and crypts of Sunnydale are apparently stuufed with piles of magic rings, sacred relics, ossified demons, and other supernatural goodies.
Also, Sunnydale seems to either attract, amplify, or create geniuses. Willow, Oz, Jonathan, the kid who rebuilt his dead brother, the Jekyll and Hide kid, the guy back in season two who built the John Ritter robot, Warren and his girl-bots, the other geek in the Geek Trio (th’ hell is his name, anyway?), that Frau blucher psych professor from the Iniative… I’m sure I’m leaving a bunch out. A lot of these characters have had breakthroughs in their particular areas of expertise that border on the Einsteinian. I think the Hellmouth acts like a kind of muse, inspiring certain ideas in people who have the proper predisposition towards genius, but who on their own would never amount to anything. Of course, being a hellmouth, the results tend to be grotesque, bloodthirsty, macabre, deformed, hideously evil… You know, real fluffy bunny stuff.
I think that the invincible part was just a part of the process of ascention. I think that he became invinsible for 100 days before the ascension, but otherwise I think that he was killable before that. Also, remember that for his power he had to make homages to other demons, etc. Obviously these demons were more powerful then he was, and he wanted to be as powerful, or more powerful then they were. Thus, he wanted to become a giant snake. In doing so, he gained that much power. Just my thoughts on it. Feel free to correct and criticize.
