The obvious answer – if you’re up on your old Cartoon history – is Goofy = Goopy Geer.
Goopy Geer is a virtually forgotten Warner Brothers character who first appeared in 1932. He appears in both light and dark colored versions. The dark one looks suspiciously like Goofy.
Goofy (originally called “The Goof”) first appeared in cartoons a month after Goopy, and under the name “Dippy Dawg”. I’ve long wondered if somebody was stealing from somebody else. Wikipedia claims that the virtually simultaneous appearance of the two means that neither one copied the other. But I can’t help but think that the transition from “Dippy Dawg” to “The Goof” to “Goofy” seems a little too close to the initial “Goopy Geer”. I suspect Disney stole at least the name from Warner Brothers.
