My evidence that blond hair is indeed desirable is somewhat anecdotal. Mostly, it just seems like a lot of “sex symbols” (Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Anna Nicole Smith, Pamela Anderson) and porn stars (Jenna Jameson, etc.) all dye their hair blond.
But why is this? Why is blond hair thought to be worth dying ones hair for?
Why do so many of the world’s inhabitants have black hair? I’m talking about pretty much the entire native populations of Asia, Africa, Central America, South America, and the Middle East.
I’ve noticed that people of recent British extraction (such as Aussies, Kiwis, and Brits themselves) think a man with light blond hair is likely to be gay. What started this notion? Is it still widely believed?
Could be that blondes (genetically recessive) are rarer and people like things that are rare. Or it could be a media influence. Or worse, Aryan purity preference.
My Asian mother (who looks way younger than her age) is under the strange assumption that blond guys are smarter. I don’t know where she gets this stuff.
I would wager the blond preference thing started with just one culture and spread from there. Not sure where, but I’d be interested to find out. I’d guess it comes from a traditionally ‘white’ culture, since there are only a couple of non-white groups with blond hair.
I just had the tips of my hair dyed blonde (from dark, dark brown) and I have gotten so many comments and suggestive looks over the last few days.
The best was a young lady in a BMW Z3. I pulled up next to her in my big work van (I am an A/C Repairtypeperson) and she winked at me. A few minutes later I got a call on my cell phone (the number is on the side of the truck) from her. She said that I was cute and she wanted to know if I wanted to go out.
Sadly I told her I was married, and that even though I would love to I couldn’t accept. She seemed dejected enough to offer her email address to me. Haven’t emailed her yet, but I am thinking about it (nothing strange, she just seemed interesting).
I generally find brunettes more attractive (perhaps because I’m a blond guy). However, hair color is not really all that much of a factor in my preference compared to other traits (even when we’re just talking about physical attractiveness, I would say facial features are most important, followed by body shape, with hair color near the bottom of the list). I also find natural brown or black hair more attractive than dyed blond hair. (I haven’t said anything about redheads because the sample size has been too small for me to judge…)
So, regarding your question, I have no furshlugginer clue.
Once I heard that in Scandinavian countries- where blonde hair is (or historically was) more common- that darker hair is (or was) more desirable than blonde hair. Don’t know if it’s true.
I don’t know either. Like Already in Use, hair color is way down near the bottom of my list… but I actually prefer dark hair to blond. However, wavy red hair is incredibly attractive, especially that closer to auburn than strawberry blond. Mmmmmm…
Since this is IMHO, I think that blondeness is way overrated. I totally love brunettes, and while I admit there are many beautiful blonde women, blondness itself does nothing for me. I have never understood what all the fuss is about. Brunettes, though, make me hot. When the gorgeous brunette babe Shakira went blonde, I just about cried.
I have absolutely no idea why people are so attacted to blondes. I don’t think that blonde haired people look any younger or any better, personally.
I am a blonde myself, but I would of loved to have had really dark brown hair. Also, on men, dark brown is my favorite color. I have only ever dated 2 blonde men and physically they didn’t do near as much for me as my dark haired boyfriends did.
Yep, dark haired, is definitely my favorite choice.
Actually it can look spooky… has anyone here seen the second season of 24? At the beginning there were so many blondes I really didn’t want to see any more: there was Kim, that little girl, the two sisters, and I think a few others. It looked really bad.
