Buoyant O's

I’m sure I am not the only one with this problem. Every morning, my optimism for the day is suddenly no more when I pour milk on my Rice Crispies. Before the milk reaches an adequate level, handfuls of cereal will spill onto the table and floor. I am getting sick of hearing stuff crunch under my feet when I get a drink of water at night.

I have tried to slowly and carefully pour the milk, until the cereal is just balancing on the rim, but that only requires a few teaspoons of milk, barely enough for a moist bite. A bunch spills out anyway when I put in the spoon.

I can switch to one of those sinkable brands, like Corn Flakes, but that’s too much like running away from the problem. I’m not sure I can live with myself if I let Rice Crispies intimidate me.

Please help, morning’s coming in a few hours.

Just a thought - try putting a smaller amount of Rice Krispies into the bowl! If you find that you’re not full after consuming the bowl you can just have a second. Or pour your milk first and then add the cereal.

Cheerio!
(Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

Three suggestions:

  1. Get a bigger bowl
  2. Eat the same amount of RC, but in smaller dosses. Put only half in the bowl, add the right amount of milk, finish it off, and repeat.
  3. Don’t use a spoon, just stick your face in the bowl and drink it like soup. Mmmm, soup.

The problem is the same as filling a lock full of ships. (Well, the inverse, actually.) The cereal bits are buoyant. That’s because, a hollow Rice Krispie, filled with air, is lighter than an equal volume of milk. But the same hollow Krispie, filled with milk, would no longer float.

The key, then, is to soak the cereal. Pour the milk in the same way you’d useafire extinguisher… by moving over the whole surface of the mound of cereal. This way, you soak it all, and don’t end up with floating buoyant bits.

Easy as raining on ships.

Who the hell eats soup like that?

Aside from you, I mean.

Your problem is that you are eating Rice Crispies, which is NOT ONLY unsweetened, but does not come with marshmellows.

Switch to a delicious cereal (may I suggest “Marshmellow Maties”) and your problems will be over.

The sucrose molecules in sweetened cereal adhere to milk, thus preventing the cereal bits from falling over the side.* You would practically have to tip your bowl over sideways before the bonds would break, and cereal would spill on your floor.**

And also, you’re optimism will be further bouyed by the cute little crunchy marshmellows, a triumph in the field of candied breakfastry.

Put your Rice Krispies in the bowl. (As others said, use a little less, or get a larger bowl.)
Put milk in the bowl until the cereal is threatening to jump ship.
Use your spoon to stir the cereal into the milk.
Put more milk into the bowl.
Enjoy the delicate sounds of tiny bubbles bursting as you enjoy your cereal.

Slicing a banana on top first also helps.

Mix the cereal and milk in your mouth, sans bowl or spoon. Chew and swallow as necessary. Good luck.
