Burn Notice 6/28 (new series on USA -- spoilers)

Pretty excited about Burn Notice. It’s like a combination of the best parts of MacGyver, Bevery Hills Cop, and The Rockford Files.

It’s gonna take some time to truly flesh out the characters – the pilot attempted to shoehorn a lot of stuff, but really could only give overviews. But the overarching question (who gave the burn notice, and why?) has drawn me in because along the way to answering that, us viewers are privy to all the cool and unconventional spy stuff that Weston pulls out of his backside. James Bond’s gadgets have got nuthin’ on Weston’s trips to the Home Depot

Fiona’s saving of Weston’s ass was cool and all … but it should have been left out of the commercials. Would’ve been better for that to have come out of nowhere.

For Bruce Campbell fans, he’s in this show, but is not really out from under wraps just yet. Maybe in later episodes. I’ll be watching.

I enjoyed it. I thought it was a fun, disposable little confection. The part where he paid those kids to lie to the police was damn funny. And the lead has real charisma.

It did get a little narration-heavy, though. In most cases, the narration worked for me. But there was just SO much of it. I hope in future episodes that they pick their spots a little more carefully. And Fiona didn’t do much for me right away; mostly I looked at her and said, “So, how’s that Irish accent holding up, Miss Anwar?”

I enjoyed it, too. I’ve always liked Jeffrey Donovan, and was sorry that “Touching Evil” wasn’t renewed. Bruce Campbell is also fun to see on TV. I made a Season Pass for it on my Tivo.

J.

Enjoyed it as mild entertainment. I’ll probably add it to the DVR. They need to tone down on the character-introduction-with-title-card thing. Especially with minor characters you probably won’t see again. (“Sugar - drug dealer”)

Ah … but if memory serves, we did see Sugar again: that was the guy Westen shot in the leg through the wall.

I doubt the title-card thing will get much use past the pilot episode.

I liked it. I’ll keep watching.

I like the who’s-who title cards 'cause I don’t usually pay enough attention to TV shows, and those made it easy for me.

Oh yeah…and Jeffrey Donovan is HAWT!

I liked it. I made the mistake, however, of sitting thru Starter Wife to get to it (not much else on interested me and I really wanted to stay awake for Burn Notice) so I was a little drowsy and missed some of the nuances - so I’ll watch the rerun, whenever it’s on this weekend (USA always does that)
I’ll be very anxious to see how Westen clears his name. And where has Gabrielle Anwar been for the last decade and a half? Did she get taller? or is Jeffrey Donovan roughly the same height as Michael J Fox?

Sorry, I meant “won’t see again past this episode” - IOW, I hope we don’t see those title cards for every one episode character throughout the series.

Well, now, we don’t know Sugar won’t be back - he may be vacating the street level apartment, but he may be back for revenge in some future episode. He seems like the vengeful type.

I finally got to watch it last night, after having TiVOed it Friday.

I liked it. Yes, it was a little heavy on the narration, but remember, this is the first episode. You have to put the initial exposition in somehow and better that than the stilted anvilicious “plot” devices some shows.

I thought the character captions were kind of fun, actually. Especially since they were in that fun late-70’s font. They’re fun in that, when they caption every character, you don’t know which ones are important and which are throwaways. Kind of like characters in Carl Hiaasen novels, who get long descriptions and backstories only to be killed off a chapter later.

I’d call it equal parts The Equalizer and MacGyver with more humor than either, with it set in Miami to have an excuse for women in bikinis in every scene.

Did USA shelve this show for six months? All the Christmas references were a bit disorienting.

Fun show, glad someone started this thread as I’d forgotten about it but was able to catch the repeat last night. It’ll go into my rotation especially as Thursday nights are TV-dead zones for me with Ugly Betty and The Ultimate Fighter between seasons.

She played Margaret Tudor in the first season of the Showtime series “The Tudors” that began airing a few months ago. She died.

I hope you mean Margaret…

What does “burn notice” refer to? The show’s on my Tivo but I haven’t watched it yet, and I’m not hip with the lingo.

In the Spy Biz, it means blacklisting a spy for reasons unknown to him or her - at least that’s the explanation our hero gives us.

I bought into the series when the lead character said, “Guns make you stupid.” I agree, especially when it comes to scriptwriters.

The fact that so many Dopers like this series does not augur well for it.

not to worry - it’s on USA, not one of the BIG 5

Just watched it on my DVR. I enjoyed it and I hope it sticks around. The lead, as Snooooopy said, has charisma. I looked him up on IMDB to remember what else I’ve seen him in and it looks like he’s played one-off characters in a lot of TV shows, but I think I remember him mostly from his stint on The Pretender and from his Monk episode. Bruce Campbell is always fun to watch, and I’ve always wanted to see more the beautiful Gabrielle Anwar. So this gets a thumbs up from me and we’ll see where it goes from here.

The pilot, and tonight’s episode, are being re-run twice on Saturday, the 7th.

Having now watched 1-1/2 episodes, it’s my new favorite. Hopefully they can keep up the breezy atmosphere.

I like the lead’s “OMG deer in headlights” look.

Show has potential, I am giving it a chance. Pleaseforgawdssake, not too many damn “mysteries”. I barely put up with that crap on Lost, not on a summer series.
