Bush's Union of the State... the State's the Union... the States are United speech

Actually, in the classical sense, a tragedy is defined as a story in which the protagonist either dies or suffers some great fall (in status, etc.) because of his own hubris. I’d say that Prez W’s situation qualifies nicely.

I thought she was chewing gum!

Did you see the way she would move sideways in her chair when she noticed that her face wasn’t on t.v.? That’s comedy gold right there.

What makes you think she had a monitor?

Did you notice the moment of Condi staring into the camera like a hooded cobra? Annabelle Lecter.

With my kid it was primus’s cheesy home video.

I think I paid less than 20 bucks for it, and I liked to watch it to.

Or you mean her molar character.

Hmmm, I didn’t think about that. Whenever I watch something like the speech, I always watch the people behind the speaker, and what she was doing just looked funny.

I guess I thought there would be a monitor so the people in back could see what was going on.

Sorry if my observation was out of line.

Quickly skimmed through the speech and won’t comment on it as I haven’t had time to read it properly and probably wouldn’t have any real insights that haven’t been mentioned already, but for some reason this really bugged me:

“Yay! He was going to be a doctor but instead his contribution to society will be throwing a ball into a hoop for lots and lots and lots of money!”

Okay, it does say that he paid for a hospital in his home town right after that, but still. Eh. Maybe it’s just me.

Well, just watch it, is all! We’re keeping our eye on you!

And quite rightly. Buggering sheep with one’s mouth closed is so crass.

Naw, you’re not the only one. That was one of the bits I caught while driving about on errands, and I had the same reaction.

Translation: “Lucky poor non-white guy gets to leave that awful place and become civilized yay!!!”

You know, this board really badly needs the ‘nauseous’ emoticon. Here’s its approximation :x

Which President’s speech were you planning to watch? They all are the same. The State is strong, we have challenges, yadda, yadda, yadda. Oh, and there’s my wife. (Points to the audience for the ovation.)

Before anyone tries the “You’re a right-wing scum so shut up” tack, I didn’t watch it. What would be the point? SOTU speeches are all about rallying the base and getting headlines. At least for the past almost century they have been it seems.

One thing I do wonder about regarding ignoring it is this. If there were such blind hatred of Kerry, would this thread have gone so far? No. And we all know it.

I’d love to see Bush take to the air this morning and say something like this:

"My fellow Americans. It has come to my attention that those enlightened, progressive free-thinkers dominating the message boards at the Straight Dope would rather I just shut up and not speak.

They feel I embarrass them with some idiosyncratic speech patterns and they hate that I am not as polished as some other speakers. I have, sadly, refused to go to finishing school at their behest to learn to say a few words differently than I’ve known them for decades.

I can understand this. The fact that where I grew up we say “nu-you-lar” instead of “nuc-lee-ar” is something very important to the American People. Therefore, I will hereby cease to make any more speeches. I will forego any communication to the electorate. I will stop murdering the English language."
I don’t think the hamsters could handle the threads. But Goddamn would it be fun to watch to mushroom cloud over the building housing the SDMB’s servers trying to keep up!

I take it you avoid the freeper and realted web sites? :stuck_out_tongue:

Actually, his stumbling, “gosh, folks” style of speech is one that he appears to have cultivated subsequent to his earlier loss to Ann Richards, so mocking him for deliberately “dumbing down” his speech patterns seems like a perfectly legitimate target for humor.

duffer, if you think the hatred for Bush is blind, as you say, then you must have been unconcious for the last few years. Either that, or you see Bush as a competent, even decent fellow.

His actions lead me, and many other Americans, to other conclusions. Namely, that he’s an incompetent (at best), and grossly indecent excuse for a human being whose administration is responsible for thousands of needless deaths. Sorta like Lyndon Johnson, in my opinion.

You know, right up until you said this I was agreeing with you, but come on, really? He hasn’t been to finishing school? Bullshit. He worked very hard to develop that speech, or do you think that all New Haven, Connecticut born Yale educated Harvard MBA’s talk like Red Adair? His speech is about as authentic as those fake hand hewn beams you see in the McMansions.

There’s nothing wrong with pandering to your base, but why pretend it isn’t happening?

Trivia point: Pandarus

Yes, the Baby Einstein DVDs are wonderful things for frazzled parents, but my wife and I hate the Baby Einstein lady because of the way she prominently features her own stupid ugly kids in some of the videos. Baby Bach is the absolute worst, which is basically her dipshit kids making stupid cutesy statements, the crew laughing off camera, and the moron kid giving the camera an ugly, shiteating grin. The BE lady obviously thinks her kids are the cutest, smartest kids on the planet and that everything they say is adorable and everyone in the world must think that her kids are god’s gift. And that’s ok, I feel the same way about my kids. But I realize that to other people my kids are just someone else’s kids, and that other people really don’t want me shoving my kids in their faces and forcing them to say how cute they are.

Oh yeah, and Bush is a tool. He’s worse than the Baby Einstein lady. Although in his defense he’s never tried to show me videos of his stupid kids saying stupid things.

It was amazing that the Dikster is only 7’2" (heh. Only. HEH!) and yet he looked about 8’7" on camera greeting that teeny woman. Who was it? Helen Thomas? Donna ShaNaNa?

Health Tax-No-Tax Thingy:

  • If you can’t afford any insurance, you get a tax credit to afford inadequate insurance.
  • If you can’t afford adequate insurance, you will be taxed to help pay for others’ inadequate insurance, and may have to cut back on your own coverage to a level that’s even more inadequate.
  • If you can afford adequate insurance, congratulations. You get a personal auto-penned note from the Prez saying, “Your our kind of people.” (sic)

Oh And: We’re gonna cut back on junk lawsuits against physicians, because it’s a great way to distract folks from the rampant overcharging of Big Pharm and Big Insurance.

Only because he’s got that market cornered all by himself…
