I’m at that stage now myself. Ya know what? In a way, knowing I don’t have to pretend I’m cool or hip, to not have to worry about getting caught at being uncool, is a huge relief.

In case you are thinking positive came out of this thread, I wanted to mention this: I was at a friend’s house Saturday night, and she was telling me in conversational Swedish about the pants she bought for her daughter at H&M. (Swedish is my second language.) She called them “manchester” and thanks to this thread I replied, “Ah! That’s exactly what [my daughter] needs for winter too!” instead of saying something stupid like, “I didn’t know there was an H&M in Manchester [a city in my state]!” And I felt all cool and as if I knew what I was talking about for at least 45 seconds. So thanks.
So you’re still a better choice than the Sverigedemokraterna candidate, then.
A can of surströmming is a better choice than an SD candidate.
Stoneburg, thanks for the explanation. It certainly didn’t come across as happy surprise (especially with the “would-be hijacker” comment) but I can see it now for the extremely dry humor that it is.
As an aside, strangely in Australia and New Zealand, ‘manchester’ refers to bed linen.

Doesn’t it just make you want to stop trying to learn english? I mean really, sometimes it seems the language is just there to make people who try to learn it look stupid. Which may or may not be true for all languages.
It depends. Here in Norrköping the two SD candidates that got elected actually stopped showing up, so there are now two empty chairs in the local parliment… I think I can find at least a few people who will say that an empty chair is better than one with me in it. 
That’s funny, because around here it refers to a particular practice involving a man’s chest and… well, it’s a regional curiosity.

I am humbled by your capacity for compassion. Myself I can barely get a tear out when corrupt politicians abuse their powers. Before this I thought that the empathy I’m able to muster when I learn of evil leaders in impoverished nations committing atorocities was fairly strong. But compared to actually weeping over a nation having a person like me elected, into the lowest levels of municipal government none the less, it is nothing. You my friend, is a loving, caring and compassionate person. If only there were more like you in the world.
It’s actually pretty common. The situation is simmilar in many municipal parliments. The situation here was quite dramatic.
After the election it became apparent that the SD’s held the balance. The right wing alliance had 41 chairs, the left wing 42 and SD the remaining two out of 85. Before the election proccess we had a gentlemans agreement between the parties to not seek support of SD in the event of a situation like this, but when the negotiation was ended post election, there was still a lot of nervousness that the right wing alliance would break the agreement. And they did try to get their own member elected to chairman of the parliment.
After the election it turned out that all but one of the names on the SD ballot were unwilling to take the place. Some had not even been asked about being on the ballot, and the others didn’t want to be. Then a ballot is found with a signed name on it, and since SD missed the formalities of closing ones ballots for entries it was found to be a legit nomination. So it ended up with this guy who put his own name on the ballot getting the chair. Shortly thereafter the newspapers found out he was previously convicted for felonies (firearm possession among others) and he quickly disappeared.
The one name that was elected properly belonged to the current chairman of the party, he showed up a few times, put in a proposition that turned out to be copied from a left wing proposition years ago in Stockholm, then he moved to another city and gave up his seat.
I’m not sure about the legalities of having a new election to fill the seats, I suspect you’d have to go through the whole election process again, and the situation kind of solved itself since the parliment is now in effect an 83 person committee with a (minimal) majority.
Do please, explain what in your incomprehensible and juvenile offering is deserving of compassion exactly?

I profoundly apologise for the misunderstanding. If you re-read my previous reply you might understand that it was your compassion for Sweden that left me so moved. I would never ask for compassion for an unfunny, stupid bigot like me, who can’t even communicate properly in his second language. I’m a bad enough person already without asking for compassion I so clearly do not deserve.
At the same time I would like to thank you for pointing out all the things that are wrong with me, so that I can attempt to better myself. The first step towards solving a problem is acknowledging it, and I acknowledge that I did not manage to be funny or ironic, and that I am a self important blow hard among other bad things.
