Can I 'watch' a topic without getting E-mails?

I have “watched” several topics because I’m trying to somewhat re-create the functionality of the old user control panel with its subscribed threads list, but I keep getting E-mail messages every time someone posts. Is there an option to turn off E-mail but still get notifications in the top right of the page when I browse to SDMB?

In your profile under “Preferences” > Emails.

Click on your icon, then your name. Select ‘Preferences’, then ‘Notifications’. Select/unselect options as desired.

Thanks! I thought I had done that, but for some reason the settings hadn’t “taken.” Let’s see whether it works this time.

Did you remember to scroll all the way to the bottom of the Preferences page and click [Save Changes]? That’s my usual failing.

The [Save] button is below the bottom of the first page of the scroll. You’ll never know it’s down there unless you scroll down to the end. Meanwhile all the other infinite scroll pages on Discourse teach you to never try to find the page bottom because those pages are bottomless.

Couple that with the increasingly common feature on phone UIs that there is no separate [Save] button. You just check the box, tweak the dropdown, or whatever then back-arrow out of the page while it auto-saves your changes.

Both those are negative skills transference as we say in the trade.

There are two “Email” buttons on the Preferences page. Use the little faint one down the left menu.
