In this thread thanking Dolores Reborn for all her hard work funning feuds, there’s a suggestion (seconded and thirded) that she deserves a title for running one or more Feud games a day. Any chance we could get her a special title as a sign of our appreciation?
I’ve got the impression in the past that special user title questions make TubaDiva’s head explode and make the Baby Jesus cry, but I for one think it’s a swell idea.
I’m not an authority in any way, but lately I’ve noticed a lot of custom titles vanishing. Boyo Jim is no longer “Best of the Worst” and a lot of former mods and admins no longer sport “SDSAB”, which I think they got so they could post for free, since most of them never wrote a staff report or aided [del]Ed[/del] Cecil*.
For that matter, the title is no longer SDSAB. It’s spelled out in full.
*I can’t imagine the SDSAB having direct contact with CA. It must go through Ed.
I have faith that Tuba can hold her head together, she’s good at that.
The people that put in actual work to keep this board running well and benefit lots of members are usually marked with a special title, Dolores fits this category.
Don’t look TubaDiva!

I think it’s a great idea. **Dolores Reborn ** puts considerable time and effort into running the feuds, and a lot of Dopers really appreciate it. What would be the harm in a special title?
Cecil does have a strong interest in the research material submitted by the hardworking members of the SDSAB, and although he is quite busy, he reads everything submitted by the SDSAB. And he does work directly with some on the SDSAB to send them on wild goose chases - ahem, I mean, have them help chase down leads and such. As evidence, I’ve been credited in about half a dozen columns as his “assistant Una.”
He won the 2007 Bulwer-Lytton contest; his title reverted to “Charter Member” when he handed over the crown to the 2008 winner (a non-Doper, if you can imagine).
SDSAB was previously given to all ex-mods and admins, but it was recently pared down to include everyone who had written a staff report (or reports) within a certain period of time - I forget if it was a year, two, or some other amount. That was the original purpose of the title. Boyo Jim’s title changed for the reasons that were already given.
A lot of boards allow everybody to have their own custom title, even gasp unpaid posters. Some put a post count restriction on it, some don’t. I’m pretty sure custom titles were promised to us as part of the pay-to-post scheme that was supposed to make everything around here way more awesome, weren’t they? Has any of that stuff happened, and is there any valid reason why not?
We now have private messaging available, didn’t before.
Also the five minute edit window. To be fair, the custom title thing as with all of the “promises” were qualified with “maybe” and “this is what is being planned at this time” and other such weasel words.
As for the topic of the OP, to give a special title to someone who runs a bunch of games that a few dozen out of the two thousand or so active posters play is kind of silly. Why don’t you give her special recognition in your sig line or something?
I propose we grant a special title to ** Tamerlane ** for his dedication into enlightening us about historical matters. I appreciate this a lot and I’m probably not the only one.
Now, how many other posters are going to get a special title? Who posts the most high quality pictures of kittens? Who helped the most posters having problems with their plumbing? Who paid the most registration fees on behalf of broke members? Who’s the best looking? Post the best jokes? Ask the most stupid questions in GQ? Who is the most popular SDMB member? Those people deserve titles, too…
Personally, I want the most prolific French poster’s title. “King of garrulous frogs”, maybe? Who’s going to deny it to me?
. . . and not to diminish Dolores Reborn or anything but what the hell is a feud?
If Dopers were allowed to all have custom titles, they’d abuse it by all becoming Charter Member.
Excellent point. I think it closes the debate.
Former mods and admins continue to post for free.
It’s a game, based on the Family Feud TV show. The biggest difference is that the polling and trying to come up with the most popular answer is a single process. There’s usually one running in The Game Room at any given time. Why, here’s one now! If you haven’t played before, join in…just read the instructions carefully the first time.
I wasn’t a mod at that time, obviously, but I believe the custom user titles were only a potential thing, and they’re not compatible with the Charter Member thing, which some posters are very attached to.
I’m pretty sure that nominating people for special titles is not a direction we want to go in. It treads close to popularity contest territory.
I understand the “popularity contest” and “what’s so special about the feud?” objections – my thinking was that Dolores is spending a lot of time and effort in running a game – although Mullinator wrote a macro, it’s necessary to import the answers into Excel and run the scoring program – my guess is it’s an hour or so a game. She’s running one or two games a day – call it ten hours a week that she’s devoting to this. Okay, not everyone plays, and plenty of people aren’t even reading along, and it’s not “important,” like good GQ answers – but she’s putting a lot of effort into something that is currently providing many people with a lot of enjoyment on a regular basis.
If it’s out of the question, fine, I just thought it was worth asking. And I note we haven’t seen an answer from any of TPTB, just a newbie mod (you know I love you, Marley) and a has-been (just teasing, xash), weighing in with personal opinions.
