Can we PLEASE get a Vomiting Smilie?

I love that embarrassed smiley. It actually conveys embarrassment. Unlike our orange blowjob dude.

No blood, no foul.

I think we’re stuck with the current understanding of it. I agree that it would be nice to have a tongue-in-cheek smiley. Sadly, the nature of text-only communication makes that unlikely.

Another early nomination for “Barfy” from me, if I may be so bold.

FWIW, I like cyburbia’s sick smiley and maybe I even get a trickle of acceptance for their puking smiley. They’re subtle (relatively speaking) and the sick smiley gets the message across without being nasty or ugly looking, IMO.

Both Opal and Una have pretty good barfies on their respective boards. They are fun, and sometimes they are exactly what’s needed!

Would either of them be willing to share, I wonder?

Nobody needs a vomiting smiley.
There’s enough rudeness without getting childish about it.
What will you want next? The one with Calvin peeing on a Ford?

Cheers.

No, but it might be fun to have one of Gerald Ford peeing in his Calvin Kleins.

Anyone who says we don’t need a pukey has obviously never read the legendary epoch that is the original TMI thread, and it’s small line of descendants.

Of course! I never thought of this.

Bob: Hey, you remember that TMI thread way back when?
Jim: Yeah! It was, like, 12 pages long!
Bob: Yeah, you know what would make it better?
Jim: What?
Bob: 12 MORE pages of one-smiley posts!
Jim: YES!!!11111eleventhousandonehundredandeleven puke lolololol

I wish to go on record as opposing a vomiting smilie and opposing more smilies in general. Vomiting smilies are disgusting by nature. In addtion, I visited a lot of message boards duing my suspension, most had many more smilies than this one. I found them distracting. Their widespread overuse had a tendency to make the content of the posts seem stupid and immature.

Not that anyone gives a shit what I think, but the only smilies we need are:  :dubious: :stuck_out_tongue:    :frowning: and  . At most.

Get rid of cool, head slap, putz, Jew, toothy grin and me-suck-you-off embarrassed.

Here here!

I would make an exception though for emoticons that can demonstrably aid in the fight against ignorance. Such emoticons will tend to soften a message, as opposed to intensify it.

Hear, hear!

D’oh!

You’re not the only one, but the smiley is misused to the point that I’d be happy to see it go. There’s just way too many people who are simply too stupid to get the point - maybe they don’t notice that he’s smiling or something - which is why you’ll see posters using it in reference to people who commit violent crimes. “Those guys committing genocide in the Darfur are such :wally es!” and so forth. Let’s face it, not everyone can be smart, or even average. This smiley is simply too challenging for many people.

As for me, I’d be greatly disappointed to lose kneepad-smiley or the Happy Orthodox Jewish Man. Kneepads might not be appropriate for expressing embarrassment, but he’s plenty useful nonetheless. And I just like ;j. He’s cute! And there’s something pleasantly random about having a “Happy Orthodox Jewish Man” smiley.

I’d like a good embarrassed smiley, and a nauseated smiley as well. jjimm’s barfy is an excellent one, in my opinion. I don’t need to see one featuring actual vomit, thanks.

I also would like to see people who use an average of more than one smiley per post be beaten to within an inch of their lives, just on principle. They’re useful, but they’re best used sparingly.

You should have added a head-slap smiley. Oh, wait. . . never mind.

The smileys, or the people?

There’s two different issues here, I think… There’s the number of smilies available, and there’s the frequency with which they’re used. Increasing the frequency with which they’re used would probably have the immaturifying effect you describe (although there are still a few cases where a person ought to use a smiley and doesn’t). But just increasing the variety, so long as it didn’t cause an increase in the usage, could potentially make possible more nuanced communication, without unduly cluttering up the board.

I’ve been a member of a few different boards, and IME there is a 100% direct correlation between number of smileys available and frequency of smiley use, in Every. Single. Case.
