I’ve done that drive before and you’re right, it is pretty boring. I drove from Kansas to Ohio with my kids last year and that was the longest 14 hours let me tell ya! Not a lot to look at from Illinois to Ohio.
As a relatively new Doper, I have one of those newbie-type questions:
Is there a central reference point for upcoming Dopefests?
Would anyone see that as a useful thing, were I to create one?
I’m thinking about a calendar-type deal. You would submit the city, place, date/time and preferably an email address/web site for the organizer.
Whaddya think?
And, lest I end up in the Pit, yes, I know that was three newbie-type questions.
This from the original “The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes.”
Excluding Alaska and Hawai’i, the center of the country (48 contiguous states) is Lebanon, Kansas. FWIW.
Count me in for a Denver Dopefest! Mr. C., if you want any help planning, let me know. I hear JD’s on Arapahoe
is a cool hangout.
I want to be at the Denver Dopefest. I used to live in LaJunta for my early years and I have always wanted to return. That said, I currently live on the east coast and I can’t drive anywhere and I don’t think that I could come up with the money for it this year. But if you do this next year, I’m going to be there, if I have to sprout wings. (Or I may take the train.)
See, this is something that has to be done.
We need at least 8 dopers there. We need to do it right, and have a really good time and take a lot of pictures.
We need to go to a place that is not too expensive, and a place that has pool tables.
We need to have a good laugh, we need to talk about all the things that we do here, except in person.
We need to get drunk and walk around and compliment each other on our singing skills.
Can you not see how imperative it is for us to do this? I think that we could have a convention somewhere, most likely in Chicago, and that manny people could go if they had a year to plan for it.
So let’s see what we can do…
I think Denver is expensive. I like Los Angeles airport hotels, much cheaper, plus it cheaper to fly to LA, California. I was just there, they have rooms for $33 a night if you walk in. These are near the airport so they don’t mind all the noise we would make.
You are under the impression that Denver International airport has some sort of geographcal relation to Denver, a common mistake. DIA is actually in Kansas
Umm handy, the point of Denver as a meeting place is, it’s close to Lexicon (and from what I know, my friend is working two jobs as it is) who is the person that requested a closer Dopefest. Although, Las Vegas is only a 13 hour drive for him and girlfriend.
Denver is not all that expensive I stayed at a hotel the last mini-Dopefest and the rate was only $79 a night.
LoDo is a fun place and well, it’s near me too < hehe >.
BTW, The Colorado Springs airport may be a good alternative to those that don’t want to fly into DIA. There aren’t many direct flights (one or two stops) but you can find cheaper rates if you fly in there. It’s only a 60 minute drive to the south Denver area.
I would love to attend a Dopefest. I live in Lakewood and would be happy to help. Mr C. if you need any help, let me know.
Hey Lexi – if it’s any incentive, get yourself a get-together, and you and I can talk about Denver Dopefest Putz buttons.
Too bad I’m on the east-coast or I’d kick yur butt Lexi
(I’m on my 8th beer,hehehe)
You’re right, Lexicon, I never get any dopefests, either! I ought to get together with all of the other Dopers in Bozeman! oh, wait… I already am together with all of the dopers in Bozeman. sheepishly walks away
Lexi - WE already do these things, You are the one that lives in BFE.
Chronos - I spent 9 years in Livingston, why didn’t I know you then? I also went to school at MSU Bozeman, I left just over 2 years ago.
Silo- you suck.
I know, I know.
What can I do? I have to live here for like two years.
shrug
I do not want this one to sink and die. Mr. Cynical, are you still planning on setting this up?
Hmmm, travel 1500 miles so Lex can check out my ass? Sorry, I really don’t see that much in this for me.
I’m gonna save myself the airfare (unless you’re buyin’ the brew).
Pilsner - This beer originally debuted in Plzen, Czechoslovakia. It’s light- to medium-bodied, and the beer benefits from extremely soft water. Pilsners characteristically have noticeable hop aroma and flavor. The German version of pilsner is simpler, cleaner, original Czechoslovakian beer. The distinctive characteristic is the flowery hop bouquet and its dry finish from a more thorough fermentation.
Lager - Unlike ales, lagers are bottom-fermented at lower temperatures. Early brewers who stored their beer in ice caves for summer consumption found that the long, cold fermentation resulted in clear and bright beers. This was caused, in part, by the inability of bacteria to exist in the cold. In addition, the long, cold aging assisted in reducing the cloudiness associated with some ales.
Ale - Beer made with ale yeast (Saccharomyces cerevesia),often with a fruity aroma caused by fermentation at warmer temperatures.
If I’m gonna sit down and drink six or eight beers, I prefer a nice cold lager.
Thanks, UncleBeer!
Truly, it is an awesome experience to sit down and listen at the feet of a master.
I myself am fond of ordereing
“Your cheapest lager, in a frosted pint glass. Bud Light will do nicely, thank you, and sqeeze a lemon into it, please.”
Back when I was a bouncer, I would also order a mix of darker beers.
I would order half a pint of Fat Tire, mixed with half Bass.
I called it a “Fat Ass”.
If I squeezed a lemon into it, it was a “Bitter Fat Ass” or a “Summer Fat Ass.”
If I put a shot of Jack into it, it was a “Hairy Fat Ass”.
Non-regualars would look at me funny when I’d belly up to the bar and say “Gimme a Bitter Fat Ass, baby!”
Ahh, college. Would that life were that great forever…
Anyway,
UPDATE!!!
Techchick is the second coolest chic on the face of the planet. She has invited Mr. C, Chris (that’s my gf) and myself to the 8.19.2000 Denver Vs. Dallas game at Mile High.
So it’s like a mini-dopefest with football and beer.
I am sure tech will post pics, so that will be really cool. I can hardly wait!
*All the big micks with Bronco’s tix say

I need a camara though Santi – I don’t have one
