Can you name this piano instrumental?

I’ve made a brief snippet of a few notes from a piano instrumental I’ve heard occasionally over the years.

Do you know what it is? (Forgive my bad guitar interpretation!)

I got this message when I clicked your link:

Sorry about the link. However, it does work if you copy and paste it.

I feel like I should know that song, but I can’t place it.

It will turn out that I’ve never heard it.

Theme of the second movement (Andante cantabile) from Symphony number 5 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

I finally figured out that the song I was trying to remember was “You Belong to Me.”

I’ve never heard it as an instrumental, and it’s not super close, but I thought I’d throw it out there just in case.

I was wrong, it is not Tchaikovsky. I searched the opening seven notes (the first phrase of 7 notes) on Melody Catcher, and the only result it returned was — guess what, jsgoddess—“You Belong to Me.” Then I searched on the first 14 notes (the first 2 phrases) and the result I got was Shakatak’s “Night Birds.” Both of these share a certain melodic contour with the mystery tune, but neither of them really matches it.

Thanks for trying guys, but I know it wasn’t the Jo Stafford song, and Johanna I downloaded the second movement from your link, and I don’t hear it there either. I guess my guitar interpretation must need a lot more finesse, although I’m pretty sure the note sequences at least are accurate. But thanks for the suggestions.

Whatever it was, I had to have heard it on the radio. It was definitely piano. It wasn’t something that got played much, but I liked it and it had to be on some easy listening pop station, because that’s all I ever used to listen to. That or “oldies.” I think I heard someone play it once in a piano bar too.

It sounds familiar to me, too. You need to be a bit more specific. What year was it? Is the part you played the beginning or just a random piece of it?

Wild guess, but it sounds vaguely like a tune from the Last Tango in Paris movie soundtrack by Gato Barbieri called “She Is Michelle”

I don’t know what year. Sorry, I can’t be more specific. That theme was repeated several times, and ended the song as well. There was a “bridge” too, but I can’t remember it well enough to reproduce it. It should be recognizable with what I posted, if someone knows what it is.

No Ellis, that’s not it. The melody was exactly like I played it, albeit with more timing finesse. And it was piano.

Speaking strictly of the melody (without reference to a piano version), it sounds a bit like “And I Love You So,” a Don McClean song that Perry Como had a hit with in the early 70s.

But it’s also reminiscent of “Welcome to My World” by Jim Reeves.

That is pretty darned close. Here’s an instrumental version. The notes are a little different, but it’s a similar feel to the OP’s song.

Ooo…another good one. I wonder how many songs fit the bill. It’s a pretty common progression, but I’m having a devil of a time thinking of songs with similar melody contours. You’ve gotten two good ones. There’s gotta be a bunch more, but I’m struggling. All I could think of was the Beatles “From Me to You,” but that similarity breaks down quite quickly.

Sure, I’ll name it “Lick My Love Pump”.

It’s “The Homecoming” http://youtu.be/xXeHIfMBZtQ?t=29s.

Ooo… I think we have a winner! OP to confirm?

That has to be it. And I have heard that song, too.

(But I still have “You Belong to Me” running through my head.)

Yes, got to be it based on the four-note bit at the end of the first “verse.”

Still, I wonder how he didn’t run afoul of the composers of the two I posted. There are so many similarities.

EDIT: I see the artist, while born in Indiana, was known primarily in Canada, where this song was a big hit. It made it to #41 on the U.S. Pop charts (#6 Easy Listening), but I must confess that I had never heard it before today.
