I once went to a federal all candidates forum back home in which the wing-nut contingent was out in full force. The best was the candidate who went on a multi-minute long rant that was nigh on incomprehensible except for the bit about the fact that all the kids in Fort St. John have sex with farm animals.
The candidate who was a shoe-in to win the riding was from Fort St. John, but that didn’t appear to be a personal attack on him (or his three kids) – I don’t think she was even aware of her surroundings enough to know that he was from there. It was just part of her grand delusional theory of life.
I spent a good part of that debate wondering if maybe along with the filing fee and the signatures, it might be good if we also required a certificate of non-craziness for all filing candidates. No big deal if they’re a little depressed or bi-polar, but the full blown schizophrenics that are off their meds probably shouldn’t be running in an election.
