CanadaDope 2017: Celebrating the Sesquicentennial - "... and loving it!"

Where the hell is Centreville? :stuck_out_tongue:

If it’s 25 years since you’ve been in Laval you will not recognize the place. The commute to Montreal from Laval and points north is far worse than coming in from the South Shore or the West Island.

Construction in Montreal has been in high gear for the past several years and will be for years to come. So sticking to the metro is the right idea, and you can find information at http://www.stl.laval.qc.ca/en/home/ and STM | Société de transport de Montréal

So did you get through it okay?

Here is a link to a MPSIMS thread on possible meet ups and the dates I am in town.

Lets use the other thread for planning or pm me …

I know you have the sticky-out tounge smiley but is Centreville not the correct term for downtown?

I have never been in Laval in my life, unless the greyhound passes through it. I went to Concordia and lived in NDG for most of my time there, so I can find my way around via metro, and I am for sure going to Cosmo’s for breakfast at some point. Also for bagels. Also oh I don’t know… I think I am too damn old for the Peel Pub. My liver and I may have made an agreement at some point about avoiding that place.

Not when speaking English. We just say downtown.

My 'hood, and my alma mater. Moved across the country and to the U.S. before returning to the deeg several years ago, although I’ve never bothered to visit Cosmo’s.
And you’ll be happy to know you can get St. Viateur bagels on Monkland now.

Forget the Peel Pub: it’s only for the under 20 crowd.

Even if I wasn’t a whole lot older than 20, have no intention of drinking Peel Pub draft again. It makes me do stupid things, like drop out without finishing my freaking degree! :smack: Or… you know, stop living in Montreal!

When did you go to Concordia? Me 88-91. NDG Paperback and Cosmo’s were what I did instead of church on Sunday. Good to hear about the bagels, although the Plateau is closer than my old hood. My best memory of Monkland Avenue was getting ripshit bonkers with my poetry class at the home of our teacher Irving Layton. I do hope to get a good wander around NDG, but I am not too sure.

Like I said, I am going to be in Laval for at least the Tues Wed and Thurs nights, then probably stay elsewhere for Friday, and head to Ottawa on Saturday. The Montreal part of the trip is mainly to be a support person for my step son who is having outpatient surgery. He is staying in Laval, it looks like it is not far from the big park there, and the metro station, and thus I am going to be there too. I was wildly disappointed to find out we are in Laval, but maybe it will be fun.

It is now 4 weeks and 6 days until I am there. Not, like I am excited or anything!

Time to remove the statutes, change the school names, and teach the whole story, both the very good and the very bad.

Wildfires are threatening Waterton National Park. Crews couldn’t save the visitor centre, but they worked hard to save the Prince of Wales Hotel. So far, their efforts in saving the historic hotel look successful.

Waterton townsite has been evacuated, as have communities close to the park: Mountain View, and parts of the Blood Reserve. Not even reporters can get in; it is emergency personnel only. Local crews, as well as crews from Calgary, Lethbridge, and Taber, are on scene.

We’re in no danger in Lethbridge right now, and I doubt that we will be. Still, we have been breathing smoke for the past couple of months, thanks to the BC wildfires; and now, the Waterton wildfire. Northerly winds and rain are in the forecast (we haven’t had rain for about two months), and cooler temps and rain will be most welcome.

For folks who are not familiar with the Prince of Wales Hotel, check out google images. It really is all that.

Having spent a couple of nights there, I would highly recommend you visit it but have accommodations elsewhere in Waterton. Don’t get me wrong, it’s really something you should see, and the history of the place is amazing but I was not impressed with the staff, food or the rooms and I appreciate staying in historic hotels.

I was possibly doing my Pukaskwa camping last weekend but pushed it to this weekend for varaious reasons. I could not find others so was going to switch to car camping (not backpacking alone) but now it looks rainy (might chance it with a shorter drive, but not ~11 hours). But I have now found people to go with me if I reschechule for Sep 30/Oct 1. So it is back on – hope it won’t snow

I reluctantly agree. I’ve never stayed there, but I’ve had lunch in the bar a few times. The food is okay, the beer is overpriced, and the staff is inexperienced (though they try hard), but you can’t beat the view. The hotel is definitely worth a look if you find yourself at Waterton–the lobby is practically a museum–but there are better places to eat and stay.

Good news: though the fires continue to burn, the Prince of Wales has been saved, and Waterton townsite is no longer in danger.

Bad news: ranchers in the area have lost everything. Entire ranches have been lost, and while livestock has been saved, the rest of the ranch facilities are gone.

We’re getting cooler temps and rain now, so that should help. I’m not far from Waterton, and I’m looking forward to when I can go down there and look for myself.

Missed this - and I was not able to attend the Dopefect (Ottawa) anyway - but this is the huge Service Puppy:

There is snow in Edmonton.

I remember getting some very light snow here (Montreal) on September 30 once, but nothing like that.

Around my house I would call it sleet because it was raining at the same time and didn’t cover the ground. But other areas it was heavier and had some accumulation.

Typical Alberta weather - 2 weeks ago we had our hottest day of the year at 32.2

Just rain and 9 C up in the Cool Pool. I was working in shirtsleeves yesterday but I suspect that is pretty much over.
