It’s probably because NOAA in conjunction with Weather Underground has a deal with US publicly open websites and message boards by which it delivers weather on demand. If, for example, one were to post “Winter Wonderland” in one’s personal location information on such a message board, NOAA would handle the macro climate for WU to deliver local cold and snow, the way Amazon delivers packages to Canada for the USPS at the American taxpayers’ cost.
I’ve had my bike ready to go for two weeks now, and I’ve had quite enough of winter thankyouverymuch. Even a hardcore Norwegian skier would be saying “enough already”! by this point! Muffins excepted of course. Sicko.
Article on the G & M Beijing Bureau: Dateline Peking - The Globe and Mail
snippet:
"Mr. Dalgleish, who lobbied for years to persuade Chinese authorities to allow the newspaper to open an office in Beijing (motivated by his personal belief that Beijing held the keys to ending the Cold War standoff between East and West), later revealed that Mr. Nossal had been his third nominee for the Beijing job. The Globe’s first two choices were rejected by Chinese authorities, who seemingly weren’t interested in anyone who might be able to mingle with the locals without their knowledge.
“We learned that anyone who had experience in China (pre- or post-revolutionary), anyone with knowledge of the language (unless a Party nominee), was unlikely to be welcome,” Mr. Dalgleish wrote of the selection process.
Worried that the Chinese would close the bureau he had fought so hard to have opened, he told Mr. Nossal to play it as straight as possible in his reporting. No interpreting, he said, just write what you see.
From the Chinese perspective, the reasons why The Globe and Mail was the first Western newspaper allowed to set up a bureau seem lost in the mists of time, with most of the officials involved either dead or claiming they can’t remember how it transpired.
“At that time, we welcomed media institutions, including some from Western countries, so long as they treated China as an equal and with due respect,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhang Yong ventured.
“Dr. [Norman]Bethune [a Gravenhurst, Ont.-born physician famous in China for treating Communist fighters during the Second World War]was also from Canada, so there was always some special bond. Maybe there were political reasons, maybe not.” "
Hockey bus crash in Saskatchewan.
Humboldt Broncos were travelling to Tisdale for JHL play-off. Initial reports say a semi ran an intersection on the highway and broad-sided it.
RCMP confirm “multiple fatalities” and multiple injuries.
Helicopter ambulances from Regina and Saskatoon both dispatched.
Parents waiting anxiously in a local church for news …
ETA: heard from someone in Humboldt - as many as 15 may be dead.
:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
Eerie that it’s another Broncos team. In '86 the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos were in a bus crash that left 4 dead.
Fuck
Macleans article.
Mrs Piper is from that area and recognised one of the family names of a player likely on the bus.
Three helicopter ambulances were dispatched, not two, according to one news story.
I had the town wrong - the Humboldt team was travelling to Nipawin for the game against the Nipawin Hawks.
The accident occurred a quarter mile from the house of the parents of one of the players. They were able to get to the crash site and pick up their son, who’s not hurt.
A crane is being used on the remains of the bus.
Canoe News article with picture of the team and coaches in their locker room. How many of those kids are dead?
Mrs Piper knows the mom of one of the players, from her home town.
The mom hasn’t posted anything to Facebook since the crash.
Doesn’t sound good.
When I first heard of this crash, I swear, I could hear an entire nation gasp in horror.
Corrupt administrations on reservations is one of the biggest problems that aboriginal people have.
No kidding. I heard the early news last night before bed, with just “fatalities” at that point. This morning, my heart sank in my chest when I heard it was at least 14 fatalities, and some kids still critically injured. Poor kids. Poor families.
It’s too horrible to even comprehend.
Death toll has gone up to 15, apparently.
By the way, if some of you don’t normally go to Game Room, I started a thread there on the accident.
Today’s Toronto sidewalk slaughter has left a two year old orphan. The mom was one of my niece’s besties.
Fuck.
I have nothing more to say.
I live just a few blocks away from Yonge and Finch, so it’s weird to see all kinds of news coverage of my local neighbourhood. It took some additional time and effort getting home from work as well, not surprisingly.
I know I’m not in the same blood region I’m going to donate blood today.
