CandidGamera's Comic Book Trivia

You are correct, sir!

I’m calling an end to the Spectre/Dr. Fate question … the most correct answer is More Fun Comics, but I would also have probably accepted All Star Comics.

But since I have no idea when to stop beating a dead horse, I’ll throw in some more questions.

Round two!

1.) Superman had an extradimensional nemesis by the name of Mr. Mxyzptlk, a fifth-dimensional imp with magic-like powers. Batman had his own fifth-dimensional guest star, though… name him.

2.) The Original Human Torch, Jim Hammond, served with Captain America in the Invaders. Like Captain America, he had a sidekick… name him.

3.) Dr. Strange, when he became the Sorceror Supreme, was given a special amulet by his old teacher, the Ancient One. What is it called?

4.) What was the secret identity of Batwoman in the pre-Crisis DC Universe?

5.) What is the civilian name of Ambush Bug?

6.) Daredevil is Marvel’s ‘Man Without Fear’… who’s the Silver-Age DC holder of that epithet?

7.) The Silver Surfer, AKA Norrin Radd, originated on planet Zenn-La… what was the name of his love interest there?

8.) During one of the Fantastic Four’s mysterious disappearances, Spider-Man assembled an alternate foursome to take up the slack temporarily. Name the other three members.

9.) The pre-Crisis DC Universe had many worlds… Earth-One for the JLA, Earth-Two for the JSA… what was the Earth of the Zoo Crew?

10.) Before Captain Mar-Vell inherited the Quantum Bands that would later pass to Quasar, what similar-looking weapons did he wield?

Red = Bosda’s reply

3.) Dr. Strange, when he became the Sorceror Supreme, was given a special amulet by his old teacher, the Ancient One. What is it called? The Eye Of Agamotto.

4.) What was the secret identity of Batwoman in the pre-Crisis DC Universe?
Miss Keene
5.) What is the civilian name of Ambush Bug? Who cares?

6.) Daredevil is Marvel’s ‘Man Without Fear’… who’s the Silver-Age DC holder of that epithet? Mr. Miracle

7.) The Silver Surfer, AKA Norrin Radd, originated on planet Zenn-La… what was the name of his love interest there? Shalla Bah

8.) During one of the Fantastic Four’s mysterious disappearances, Spider-Man assembled an alternate foursome to take up the slack temporarily. Name the other three members. Spidey, Hulk, Wolverine & Ghost Rider. Only they were assembled by a Skrull posing as Sue Richards, not Spidey.

9.) The pre-Crisis DC Universe had many worlds… Earth-One for the JLA, Earth-Two for the JSA… what was the Earth of the Zoo Crew? Earth Z, for Zoo.

#1,2, and 3 correct. #7 close enough. Shalla Bal. #8 correct. (I phrased the question thusly because Spidey was the nominative leader of the substitute group.) #4, #5, #6, #9 Incorrect.

**Question **

Only one member of the Generation One Transformers had the power to become invisible.

Name him?

Name his primary weapon?

What did he use it for on Cybertron?

I can only answer one part of the question : Mirage.

#5 Irwin Schwab

#9 Earth C

#10 The NegaBands.

All correct!

Ah, humble ill-mannered janitor Irwin Schwab, fighting for… something.

4.) What was the secret identity of Batwoman in the pre-Crisis DC Universe?

6.) Daredevil is Marvel’s ‘Man Without Fear’… who’s the Silver-Age DC holder of that epithet?

The as-of-yet unanswered questions … plus I’m adding a theme section of questions! Today’s theme : Vulnerabilities.

11.) Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern, was unable to affect wood with his power ring. Which two JSA nemeses does this cause him the most difficulty with?

12.) Hyperion, of the Squadron Supreme, is a caricature of Superman. He has a vulnerability to a kryptonite-like substance - name it.

13.) Wonder Woman, back in the dark ages of comics, had a vulnerability as well, though it’s not been mentioned in a modern context, as far as I know. What was it?

14.) Spider-Man’s Alien Costume is vulnerable to what?

15.) Bizarro-Superman, at least in the pre-Crisis days, was crippled by exposure to what substance?

16.) Daxamites in the DC Universe are a race similar to Kryptonians. Rather than Kryptonite, they are vulnerable to a more common substance. Name it.

11 WAG The Fiddler and Plantman

12 Argonite. Krypton is actually an element, which IIRC is a gas at room temperature and sea level pressure. The same is true of argon.

13 An Amazon loses all her powers when she is bound by a man

14 Sonic energy and fire

15 Blue kryptonite (thoug there are rumors of purple kryptonite which affects bizzaro as red affects kryptonians, these rumors have never been proven)

16 Lead. Though they can be cured of lead poisoning by a serum made with green kryptonite

Correct on all but #11. Argonite, according to what I’ve read at least, is supposedly a rare isotope of lead… interesting connection between Hyperion and the Daxamites.

I thought Nick Fury’s unit was the Howling Commandos?

Also, CandidGamera asked what the Ancient One gave Dr. Strange when he became the Sorceror Supreme. It wasn’t the Eye of Agammotto, because that’s what TAO gave him when he defeated Dormammu. Dr. Strange didn’t become Sorceror Supreme until TAO died, and upon that moment TAO became one with the universe. Before he departed, he gave Dr. Strange the Ankh.

Who asked anything about Nick Fury? looks around I asked a question about Sgt. Rock.

Maybe I’m remembering a different version of the Strange Origin story, I was certainly thinking of the Eye of Agamotto. I must admit to not remembering an Ankh anywhere. Though I’ve certainly read enough issues of What If? to confuse the origin story.

Re Argonite
Hmm, apparently in the comics it is some kind of isotope, either of lead, or mixed with it Hyperion sheet for Marvel’s RPG

However, a search of the web reveals that the term argonite (dictionary dot com doesn’t list argonite but does list aragonite. The definition of aragonite matches all the argonite hits I got. I assume it’s just a different spelling.) refers to a type of crystalized calcium carbonate-high grade pieces are carved for jewelry, low grade pieces are used as gravel in fish tanks.

IMHO however, the name of the one substance Hyperion is vulnerable to originated as I said earlier. The fact that a substance called argonite actually exists is a coincidence. Rod Serling came up with the name Twilight Zone. He later learned the term was used in aviation.

Re Nick Fury

Correct. But the earlier question was about Sgt Rock.

RIGHT!

Anybody wanna go for 3?

I’ll take a stab at the last one:

Solomon Grundy - because he is a swamp creature composed mainly of vegetation, not terribly far removed from Swamp Thing.
The Sportsmaster - because he uses wooden baseball bats and hockey sticks as weapons.

Wasn’t Mirage some kind of sport-hunter on Cybertron? He’d use his invisibility powers (and also a hologram generator, if I’m not thinking of Hound) to hunt some kind of lower life-forms, like Cybertronian equivalents of foxes.

Solomon Grundy, correct. Sportsmaster… ehh, I’d argue differently. Here’s a hint : the guy I have in mind is a member of the recent incarnations of the Injustice Society. Good guess, though.

Batwoman was Kathy Kane.

Hal Jordan was always said to lack fear, although I don’t recall him being billed as “Green Lantern, Man Without Fear”.

Right use, but invisibility is not a weapon, it is a power. And it was Hound that could project illusions.
