But Cap’s overarching power isn’t the super soldier stuff but his character and leadership. Think of the other Avengers…all of them have significant character flaws that they struggle with. Cap, on the other hand, is simply committed to being a good man and doing the right thing…and he expect those around him to do so as well. That’s why having him at the center of a political thriller is a good idea. He’s not the sort who can turn away from a conspiracy without attempting to deal with it.
I think the new cap is terrible. First, they reversed the Bucky and Steve Rogers personalities. Then, they recycled every stunt from Indiana jones they could find. I have little or no hope part 2 will be any better.
I’m now absolutely obsessed with American Captain. SO GOOD.
ETA - recall, by the way, that he isn’t only disoriented by temporal displacement AND the whole “what do soldiers do after the war?”/PTSD thing but ALSO can you imagine how bad it would screw a person up to stick them in a whole new body, send them off to war, then everything else happens? Dude has got to be crawling with issues.
Captain America was helped a lot by being a period piece. Well, at least that it was set in the 40s. Sure, you have to bring the character forward in time for the Avengers and obviously any sequels will be modern, but there was something really fun about it being set in WWII. I think it’s a close competition between Iron Man and Captain America for the best in-house Marvel movie.
I’ve liked all of the movies in this continuity, but I think The Avengers was the best of them. It was just such a challenge to fit them all into the same movie, that when they succeeded at that challenge, it was all the more amazing.
If you’re not looking for “Cap doesn’t know how to use a cellphone” then the movies appear to be doing just fine.
Avengers established that after the thaw, Cap spends his time in a dilapidated gym training by himself. “Trying to get me back into the world?” tell us that he doesn’t really do much else. Now from the trailer alone, we see that Cap dealing with not fitting in in a modern is going to play a part… so what else are people wanting?
Yeah, I don’t think they should spend too much time mining this kind of material. Yes, there’s the whole man out of time aspect that Cap represents, but it’s more about ideals and beliefs than technology and those aspects of modern society. He did have to fight Nazis with rayguns in the first movie, so flying aircraft carriers and cell phones shouldn’t be too difficult for him to comprehend.
On top of that, Captain America is the peak of human abilities. He has the speed, strength, and agility that isn’t necessarily superhuman, but it’s at the pinnacle of human ability. He couldn’t even get drunk to morn the loss of Bucky because his body processed the alcohol too quickly. His mind is like that too, so he’s not going to be spending a lot of time marveled at new technology and mashing buttons like a dumb monkey, he’s going to spend the time needed to learn it so he can use it.
I just saw Captain America 2 yesterday. It was okay. The dialogue was pretty flat; a lot of the lines that were supposed to be witty did not really work for me. And for some reason I find Captain American as a character kind of bland. I don’t know if that’s just how the character is written or if the actor just doesn’t do it for me.
All that said, it was definitely entertaining, and I thought the action scenes were pretty well done. My husband thought overall the movie was better than Thor 2, but I felt like the characters in Thor 2 were far more interesting than in Captain America.
The mid-credits scene was definitely intriguing. Post-credits scene was less exciting.
Yeah, I saw it on Friday. It was exciting and I enjoyed it but … I can’t help but feel it was a missed opportunity. I had hoped for more of the political side and a bit less of the fighting. For me the highlight of the evening was seeing Rocket Raccoon take up an entire cinema screen during the trailers. I thought I’d never, ever see that.
I also enjoyed the brief mention of Stephen Strange Mid-credits scene wasn’t what I expected at all and was a nice surprise.
I saw it on Friday, and loved it. It’s probably my favourite Marvel film after the Avengers. Great plot, great actors, great action, it was very hard to fault.
I enjoyed all the Phase 1 movies, but so far, all the Phase 2 movies seem even better. Marvel are really getting into their stride
I love that, because it implies that…
Jules in Pulp Fiction was actually Nick Fury undercover, trying to retrieve the Tesseract from Marcellus Wallace
