Carnivale: Insomnia (SPOILERS)

–Ben won’t let himself sleep; hey man, I’ve been there, and insomnia IS a cruel mistress. If I were having hyper-realistic dreams about my legs and arm being severed, I’d be counting sheep in reverse too. It strikes me that the person he’s channeling in that dream is the Russian who was attacked by the bear… are we thinking he’s Justin/Alexi and Iris’ dad?

–Apollonia was raped by that guy with the tattoo of the tree on his back. We’ve seen him before, in one of Ben’s dreams, running through a forest or something. Anyone remember this? Any ideas on who it is? Could it be Lodz?

–Lodz says if Ben doesn’t dream, he can’t be reached. Reached by whom? Lodz? Does Lodz want to help Ben, and if not, what the hell DOES he want? Can he somehow leech off Ben’s power? Also, I don’t know why Lila puts up with him; he’s awfully mean to her. I’m sure that hookah eases the pain, though.

–So Samson lays the cards on the table… Scudder is Ben’s father, which we all knew. Ben still won’t level with him. I think he’s a fool, since I think Samson is likely the only person he can trust.

–Why did Justin make that guy bang his head bloody on the pillar? Was it because, at the sound of Iris’ voice, he wanted to flagellate himself and could not because of the setting?

–Poor Tommy Dolan wants to get with Iris Crowe. Can’t for the life of me figure why, since Amy Madigan is frumped out to the nines in this role. Wonder if this is the last we’ll see Tommy.

–Jonesy is finally getting that much-desired attention from Sofie (or is it Sophie? They spell it both ways on the HBO website…) and Rita Sue has the gall to get jealous. Ewww. I’m really starting to get a hate on for that character. It’s obvious this affair is going to A Bad Place, and I still think Rita Sue is doing it for ulterior motives; was she faking it with Jonesy to get back at Felix? Is she trying to get back at Felix for neglecting her?

–Though I’ll be the first to admit, Sophie kissing Jonesy was too little too late, anyway.

–Wow, Lodz could not possibly handle Ben more poorly. OK, OK, he needs to learn how to control his gift, and the dreams can help with that… do you mind telling us HOW? And then, calling him a coward and throwing his mother’s death in his face… you want this kid to TRUST you? Work on your people skills, Professor.

–Ironically, Lodz tells Ben that he’s “never lied” to him, and Samson leads off with “I lied to you…” but it’s still a no-brainer who Ben should trust.

–So Management keeps a photo of Flora, Ben’s mother, in a leather photo album. This keeps hope alive for my pet theory that Management is Hack Scudder. Leaving Flora broke Scudder, apparently, so why’d he leave?

–We finally get to see Lodz’s act, which must be like shooting fish in a barrel for him. I like Samson’s monkey wrench ala watch fob… more visions of crusaders, and that guy who was mauled by the bear. Great. OK, guys, tired of the cryptic images… I’m really ready for some answers.

–Ben sees Ruthie’s snake charmer act, and in spite of his own charmed snake, he flees from her kiss. Why? Because she was with Scudder? Or because he knows if he has sex, he’ll definitely fall asleep?

–The Acts of Redemption by Brother Justin Crowe, Chapter 1: Pain is an Unavoidable Side Effect. Huh? Creepy. How did he get that doctor to transcribe his book? Where is he going with this? I think that, if he’s the Left Hand of God, he’s not on the path of sweetness and light here, folks.

–Lodz shows Management Scudder’s Templar watch fob, and says “Now we know why we’ve had so much trouble dealing with Hawkins.” Management responds, “We should have known that from Babylon.” I feel like I should know what this means, but I don’t. Anyone?

–Previews seem to indicate that Justin and Iris will be reunited next week, Jonesy and Rita Sue will become obvious enough that they are the subject of gossip, and distress for Libby, and we’ll see the Man with the Tree Tattoo rapist again… and only 3 episodes left. They sure got some ‘splainin’ to do…

Are all episodes this short? Think it was around 45min. I really enjoyed last weeks episode (Lobster Gal, Lodz w/ Mgt, Libby/Sophie) but this week seemed to, well, not do much for me. Maybe my expectations are too high.

Did get to see the Carnivale in action, though. Don’t need to see it again.

But Jonsey/Rita Sue - who didn’t see that coming?

I suppose we may have learned that Sophie and Ben aren’t related.

The images of heads on sticks we’ve seen before.

Lodz is the same (his seizure was nice).

Brother Justin - I just don’t get it. I feel like they are starting something big with the mental institution, and the epidose begins with the head-banging incident - but then he just gets released?

I agree - don’t understand what Mgt and Lodz mean in saying that they should have “known that from Babylon.”

You want to know what my WAG on who raped Apollonia? I think it wasn’t Justin per say, but Justin’s father. So Sophie could be considered an extension of whatever side Justin is batting for. And that may have been the motivation for the rape in the first place.

Sophie could be a mole, and she may not even know it.

The tree-tattoo man who raped Appolonia – we saw him in one of Ben’s early dreams (maybe the first episode) chasing Scudder through a cornfield. I’m pretty sure we got a better look at his face then as we did this time, and he’s not Scudder’s nemesis (the Russian soldier).

Justin in the mental hospital – it seems the doctor has become his disciple. Because he was convinced of Justin’s powers or because Justin is manipulting him? Almost certainly the latter, I’d guess.

I thought the thing with the dude banging his head on the pillar was an effort by Justin to distract the staff from the radio report. I assumed it was because he didn’t want to be recognized as the subject thereof by any of the staff (other than his doctor, who Justin already has his hooks into).

Whoever Management is, why has he suddenly begun talking to Lodz? I don’t think Lodz is evil, I think he’s just an opportunist who is trying to ride Ben’s coattails.

–Cliffy

It definitely looked to me that the doctor was under Justin’s spell. Note the unknotted tie and the frazzled, haven’t slept in weeks look about him. I guess the doctor wrote the book telepathically. Neato!

At first I thought that Justin was having a vision about being released, thinking it odd that he was getting sprung after nightfall. I’ve got to think that mental patients (especially back in that era) weren’t typically released by letting them walk out the front door without any supervision.

Not nearly as much plot development as seemingly promised in the previews especially in regards to Mr. Inscrutable.

He didn’t get released. He walked out because he had the whole place under his control, and nobody could stop him. ALso, I imagine he waited however long he did to just walk out until his “martyrdom” was cemented—his sister begging him to come home was a nice touch. Now he can go from town to town and raise hell (heh). Or just back to his town…either way, he’ll be welcomed with open arms now.

My pet theory is that he’s wanted for murder because he had sex with some girl and the contact killed her. We got a clue when Lodz said to Lila earlier in the season when she was going on about how…doable…Ben is that Ben could kill her. She said something about “what a way to go”…

pepperlandgirl, I like your theory about Ben’s sexuality and how it can kill his partner. That makes sense on a lot of levels… why Scudder had to break up with Flora, why Ben was so gruff with Sophie, Libby, and Dora Mae, and then walked out of a clinch with Ruthie, whom we know he wants badly.

Cliffy, thanks for clearing up where I saw the tree-tattoo guy from… I knew it was a dream. He was chasing Scudder, huh? Did he look like anyone we know? I may have to rewatch and see.

I agree with everyone who thinks that Justin basically dominated everyone in the mental hospital. I still think that the electroshock, etc., have intensified his powers, or else freed him from his inhibitions against using them. The Gospel According to St. Justin… and it’s all about pain.

The battle lines seem to have been drawn; now I’m interested in seeing these two plot lines converge. I hope it’s interesting enough to warrant all this buildup.

In this article, Knauf relieves any apprehension that the story will not be resolved.

He says that the mythology was fully developed before shooting started, and that he knows what the last frame in the last shot will look like.

However, he says that it will take at least three and not more than six years to tell the story.

So does that mean that the time frame depends on how many episodes HBO wants to do for each “season”?

I also noticed the credits as they were going by, and I swear that they said Don Swayze was the Tattooed Man from Apollonia’s memory, but I can’t find anthing to verify that on the HBO website.

I don’t know if I can hold out on this series for 3 - 6 seasons… it’s just so damn frustrating.

Yeah, SylverOne, it was Don Swayze.
