Appolonia told Lodz that Sophie was “it” or something to that effect and he couldn’t believe it… something to do with Tattoo Guy?
-
What does it mean that the father sinned when Justin showed him rescuing them as kids?
-
Apparently Management was also involved with the FBI some 60 years in the future (bad X-Files smoking guy reference)
-
Nice to see the twins and Lizard guy… heck, I don’t even remember their names anymore
Hi greatest sin was saving Brother Justin. I am going under the assumption that whoever was trying to kill them knew what Justin was and by saving the kids, the Priest was commiting a sin by allowing evil to live.
My question is, will there be a season 2? That’s not been made clear at all.
Two actors are chatting on HBO.com and they haven’t gotten any official word yet, but a strong ‘probably’. Back to the chat…
Thoughts about “The Day That Was the Day”
–What a dumb episode title.
–So Ben and Management are the same; Mgmt says that taking a life for a life is “the way of our kind.” I just wish I knew what that means. However, we do learn that Ben’s first murder was in the same type of situation: he killed someone to save someone else. The law is still looking for him too.
–What was Stumpy planning to do with that gun? Pull a “Hey Joe” and shoot Rita Sue if she professed love for Jonesy? Lucky for both of them that Jonesy broke it off the day before. Nice move on Stumpy’s part, asking for $40 from Jonesy, with the “friend discount.” That was cold but clever.
–Ben’s middle name is “Krohn.” Anyone glean any significance from that?
–I loved that scene with Dolan, where he tells Justin he wants “something in exchange” for getting Justin’s message out and Justin says, “My sister?” Dolan quickly denies it, and I couldn’t quite read Iris’ face-- was she mad at Justin for asking or Dolan for saying, “Of course not!”
–Loved the way Apollonia summoned Lodz; classy. Lodz arrives and promptly says, “How long have you known? It can’t be her! This is madness!” We assume he’s talking about Sophie, something to do with Tree Tattoo Man, and it’s bad enough for Apollonia to burn them both alive to put an end to it…
–Samson got tough with Ben all of a sudden, didn’t he? Saying how everyone was better off without Ben, Ben was no one, someone nobody cared about. Samson’s alienation from Management must be getting to him.
–It seems that Justin doesn’t know what will happen when he shows a person his sins, as it turns out that Norman’s worst sin was actually an act of Christian charity in rescuing Irina and Alexi. Whoops, overshot yourself there, huh Justin? I knew Norman wouldn’t be able to euthanize Justin. I recognized those black contacts from Buffy-- shades of Dark!Willow.
–Ben decides that he’ll trade his life for Ruthie’s and cuts his carotid artery, only to be saved by a spectral Scudder. “You have to make a choice,” Daddy says, and then winks out. Seems that he and Management agree on something.
–Lodz called Management “my prince,” anyone else catch that? Was that a reference to their shared Russian heritage? Did Management actually restore his sight or was that an illusion, as it went away when Lodz died? If not, what does it mean that Lodz went back to being blind upon his death? Clearly Management was feigning affection for Lodz in order to set him up for the show’s finale. Maybe Management is that Russian soldier who was mauled by Lodz’s bear after all?
–Sophie really killed two birds with one stone, eh? Revenge on Libby and Jonesy in one fell swoop. I couldn’t feel too badly for Jonesy; did he think, in a social circle that small, that Sophie wouldn’t find out about him and Rita Sue? However, Rita Sue is Libby’s mother, and blood is thicker than water. I can understand why she would have kept quiet about the whole thing, hoping it meant nothing and would blow over. Her, I felt badly for.
–The fire…I guess that’s our cliffhanger. Anyone want to lay bets on who lives?
–So Ruthie is alive now. It seems that Ben only has to form an intent to transfer one life to another in order for it to happen. A neat trick.
–When does Season 2 start?
Major Spoilers follow!
I believe Lodz said “She’s the one?!” or “It’s her?!” No names were mentioned, but it seems clear since he was appalled at Appy’s plan, with what happened at the end, he was referring to Sofie. As to what she is/was, I don’t have much clue. An avatar? Carrying some evil spawn? Evil spawn herself, since she’s Treeboy’s daughter? She certainly acted evil in this ep!
I love what happened to Lodz, both because he’s such a bastard, and because I like that there are no clearcut heroes in this story.
Speaking of which, I liked Justin’s final attempt to avoid his fate. It’s much more interesting to have him conflicted. Iris though, seems to be pure, unapologetic bad news.
Management is voiced by Linda Hunt, but didn’t Lodz refer to it as “my Prince?” Is Management supposed to be a surviving relative of Nicholas II?
I liked the way Rita Sue and Felix resolved things. It was very in character. Maybe some will consider it anticlimactic, but in an episode with three murders, a suicide, and a resurrection, can you really complain?
And I loved, loved, loved that last scene. It was a little bonus there, when I thought the season (please not the series!) was over.
I have tried the chat multiple times but with no luck.
Figuring that HBO and runs one new series at a time, it will be a long time before, if ever, there is a second season of the show. Figuring that SITC needs to finish up, then SFU, then Sopranos, it will be a long wait.
-
Both Ben and Justin try to avoid their fates by death.
-
“It’s her!” … hmmm… so a female can be a major player in the Big Conflict. Could it be that Iris is the major force behind Justin? Is she playing him like management was playing Lodz?
-
“The Day That Was The Day” – could this be a reference to what Ben saw in the mine? RAVATARAVAT… And what he wrote in blood on the grave? RAVATAR. Then by getting rid of the R, he read AVATAR. So… the title is “That Was The Day” but only looped around, like the never ending incarnations of the the avatars.
I think Pa Walton’s greatest sin is still not clear: it could be saving Justin yes, but I think it is his saving Iris, who seems much more evil and unrepentetent (sp?) than Justin.
**
I thought it was likely to either be a suicide or a murder followed by suicide.
**
What did Jonsey do that was so bad? By all indications the attraction between Jonesy and Sophie was a one way street. So Jonesy got some good lovin’ from Rita Sue and then broke it off when Sophie showed some interest again.
**
Or she may have just hoped that Sophie would never find out and wouldn’t have to be hurt.
**
I think Appolonia and Lodz have got to be dead. Somebody has to die or we, the audience, are going to feel cheated. I predict that Jonsey and Sophie are going to come out very badly burned.
It takes them forever to begin a new season. I’d say September 2004.
Marc
I’m betting early 2005. Mainly cuz that’s what the article at tvguide.com says.
I just read that. Is anyone going to even remember the show at that point? Yikes!
Since it’s HBO, they’ll run the entire first season again sometime late in 2004. HBO is the network of second, third, and fourth chances.
I missed a good chunk of the episode but what’s to be made of Appolonia’s increasing mobility and communication skills? Why is she all of a sudden beginning to break from her catatonia? Or was she all that catatonic in the first place? Lodz’s eyes changing color also confused me.
As someone else said, I don’t think it’s clear at all if Norman’s sin was saving Justin or saving Iris. This could be a plot twist in the making. Obviously Justin thought it was for saving him though. What evil things have we actually seen Justin do? Snapping the man’s neck as a child was to save himself and Iris. He caused a mental patient to bang his head on the wall. What else?
My guess is also that Appolonia and Lodz are dead. Lodz just about has to be dead since Ruthie came back. I expect to see Sophie and Jonesy again (if there is a second season).
I thought Stumpy made a very good turn out of a bad situation with Jonesy. By making it be “just business” everyone can put the situation behind them. I don’t have the quote, but I loved his comment about, “we’re friends… or at least what passes for friends since we don’t have anything better here.”
Sophie pulled a good setup. I was wondering where it was going. I didn’t see why she wanted to hurt Libby at first. I guess it was justified in her mind.
Could it be that we have two sets of siblings that are eventually going to clash? Ben and Sophie versus Justin and Iris. There really isn’t anyone who is clearly good. Ben might mean well, but management has definitely led him down the path to temptation.
Let’s hope for a second season!
I’m not judging; I’m just saying that he couldn’t imagine that he could reconcile with Sophie hard on the heels of having rampant sex with Rita Sue without Sophie finding out. In fact, he pushed her away and rejected her when she kissed him, saying he wanted to “take it slow” when the real reason was that he was sleeping with Rita Sue and hadn’t really decided how to proceed. Also, it’s icky to find out the man you’re in love with and who you’re pursuing is sleeping not only with your best friend’s mom but also with a hooker. I’m not saying it was entirely rational, but I am saying I understand.
Um, need I remind you that Sophie’s mother is PSYCHIC? There’s no way in hell anyone could have reasonably thought that Sophie could stay in the dark about this forever.
Longer. OT, but I’m wondering when the Sopranos is starting again. Anyone know?
I believe this is the last season of the Sopranos.
I think most of the carnies think it’s just another act. Stumpy didn’t really believe Appolonia had any abilities until after the reading began.
Marc
Marc: I don’t agree that the carnies don’t believe that certain members of their troupe actually do have psychic powers. I think Stumpy’s lack of desire to visit Apollonia had more to do with his inability to confront the situation in his life than doubt of Apollonia’s abilities. They all seem to know that Sophie and Apollonia are communicating even though Apollonia has been in a coma since Sophie’s birth.
I do think it was a bit harsh of Sophie to expect Libby to go running to her about Rita Sue and Jonesy. I bet Libby figured it was business, not love, and therefore not worth discussing. What I think really set Sophie off was the sense that there was more to the Rita Sue/Jonesy liaison than just sex. She saw them at dinner once and Rita Sue refused to look at Jonesy, all hurt, while he made cow eyes at her and looked pathetic. That moment was probably what turned the knife. I know it would for me.
pepperlandgirl: There is at least one more season of the Sopranos left. I think the Sopranos usually starts in January, but I got off my lazy butt and checked hbo.com and Season 5 starts on March 7, 2004. Sigh.
I think that Management gave Lodz his sight back so that when Ben confronts him about murdering Ruthie he can see the guilt in his eyes. As in the eyes are the window to the soul, unless you are blind that is… After revealing Lodz crime Management specifically instructs Ben to look into Lodz eyes. It is at this point that you find out what Lodz “present” was. As to why his eyes fade to milky white again, I think it was to make absolutely obvious what the “present” was.
Also, it would be interesting if Ruthie came back to life because Appollonia, Sophie, or Jonsey had died. But I suspect that she could only happen by Justin choosing to murder someone.
But Ben didn’t know about the “present,” so Lodz’s eyes clouding over again after death wouldn’t prove anything other than the fact that Management had restored his sight. Why would the “gift” end upon Lodz’s death? Will Gabriel’s arm be broken again when he dies? What about that little girl’s legs?
There will be a sixth season of The Sopranos too. I can’t wait til march. I also can’t wait to see the new western show on HBO, Deadwood.
