Getting what from, the idea that it seemed early on that Sofie and Ben might hook up, or the idea that they might both have the same father?
In the case of the former there was a definite attraction there on Sofie’s part until Ben’s standoffishness and total lack of interest drove her away, I remember one of the characters even commented on it in one of the first few eps. They wasted no time scuttling even the possibility of romance between them, but at least in the very first episode I thought that was the direction they were taking things with them. I was pleasantly surprised they didn’t, but there’s always the chance Ben will get over being an asshole and something could still happen between them assuming they aren’t related.
As for the latter, the mysteriousness about the identity of Sofie’s father has me thinking it might . . . might . . . be Scudder, who from what little we know of him certainly had a way with the ladies, but it could just as easily be anyone else at the Carnival including Samson and, probably most likely of the other possibilities, Lodz.
I just want to check in here to note how disturbed I am at the continued notion of someone named “Lodz” having sex.
Seriously, though, what is it that Lodz does with the carnival? Does he have an act? According to HBO’s site he’s a mentalist but we’ve never actually seen him do his act. Is he retired?
Y’all are ascribing some pretty high motives to that Okie who pulled down the wanted poster. He’s a desperate man with a family to feed; it’s just as likely that he’ll try to turn Ben in and claim the reward.
Ben just flat out wasn’t interested in her from the get go, IIRC; he’s always had it for Ruthie. Sofie definitely gave him the eye, but quickly turned into, as Ben put it, a crazy bitch with a penchant for leaving him places and driving away because he did not feel like spilling his guts to her or requiting her interest. I found her lack of respect for his privacy and subsequent petulance nearly annoying as Ben did.
I don’t think Ben was an asshole to Sofie. I remember him being taciturn and her being demanding, leading to further gruffness on his part, resulting in her ditching him and driving away… twice. Sofie LOVES to go off in a huff after some man has displeased her in some way (she’s FAR more tolerant of, say, Libby, for example…) She’s a pain in the ass, IMO, and I can’t blame Ben for being disinterested. He likes his woman more mature, obviously.
While of course it’s possible, I don’t see any real evidence or hints that Scudder is Sofie’s father. I think Apollonia would have warned Sofie off the boy if that were the case. I think Lodz is a better choice, based on his comment to Apollonia, “We always worked better together…,” though perhaps Management is her father…
